Julie; I did find a data sheet on your great grandfather, John T. R. Segraves and would be happy to share what I have in the hopes you will correct me where I have bad information.
John first appears in the 1880 census in Stewartsville, Greenwich Twp., Warren Co., NJ. In that listing he is shown as a white male, age 33, born in NJ. His wife is Caroline, age 41, born in PA. His children are listed as:
James E., son, 12, PA
Eugene, son, 12, PA
John T. R., son, 9, PA
Bessie, 5, dau, PA
Wm L., 1, son, PA
Nina Kellam, 18, dau, PA
Roy Kellam, grandson, 1/12, NJ
I believe that his age is wrong or he married an older woman with children. In either case, I do not find him on the 1850 NJ or PA censuses where he would have been a 3 year old child. He may have been elsewhere, or missed by the census for some reason. As a result, I have no source for his partentage.
Caroline was born about 1839 in PA. She died fairly young since John T. R. subsequently married a Mary Monk. This and much other detail comes from a personal history sent to me by John Walter Segraves, a great grandson of John T. R., some time ago. John Walter must be a cousin of yours.
John T. R. served in Co. G, 141st Regt., Pennsylvania Volunteers during the Civil War according to John Walter.
I don't know your exact descent from John T. R., so I will give you what I know about his sons. James Edward and Eugene are twins (according to the 1880 census) born in Oct 1867 (according to the 1900 census). James Edward married Margaret Walter who was born about Feb 1874 in PA. They had Nina K., Apr 1891, NJ; Pearl, Jul 1893, NJ; Willard Walter, 14 Nov 1896, NJ; and James Edward, Jr., about 1911.
James Edward, Sr. died 20 Sep 1949 in Martins Creek, Northampton Co., PA according to the New York Times edition of 22 Sep 1949. Margaret Walter Segraves died in 1935 in Phillipsburg, Warren Co., NJ.
Eugene married a Sarah P., born in Sep 1866 in NJ, and had two sons: Earl, 10 Nov 1890, NJ; and Carl, Oct 1896 , NJ. In 1900 they are on the census in Pohatcong Twp., Warren Co., NJ.
I have a few other details, but rather than just listing them here, I will let you tell me what is of most interest to you.
