My name is John Duignan. My father was born in Dublin In the Cabra area on July 3, 1899. His name was Luke Duignan and he came to America in 1922. My grandparents names were Luke Duignan and Ellen Allen. I am just beginning to search for my roots and I am having trouble with the spelling of my grandfather's name. I located my father's birth certificate and his name was "Dignan." On the ship manifest my father is carried as "Duignam". You can probably imagine how this slows down my search. I am going to try to determine the correct spelling from the Irish census of 1901 and 1911. Any tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am also interested in how you pronounce Duignan. Do you pronounce it "DEG-NAN" or "DOO-IG-NAN".
