Ní before a surname indicates daughter or female descendent. Iníon is the gaelic for daughter. In English née indicates a woman's maiden name. My own surname is McDonagh, but in gaelic its Ní Dhonncha. While mac is the gaelic for son, ó means from like van or von in Dutch/German.
