Surnames: ni Hulian, Dennis
My ancestor Donnock (Tonath, Donald)Dennis arrived in the colony of Virginia, Northampton County around 1665. In 1661 he married Ellis (Elice) Nehulian. Both were supposedly from Ireland, possibly County Galway. The name Nehulian has baffled people for years. Recently I read an account of Grania O'Malley in which her name was shown as Grania ni Malley. Can anyone tell me if "ni or ne" was/is a variation of the typical "O' Mc or Mac" in Irish names. If the "Ne" in Nehulian is discounted, than her name may have been Holian or Houghegan or something more likely.

Thanks,

Rob
