To view the names of the people who submitted information about the Boone
children, I would like to recommend you pay a visit to your local Family
History Center, and look at the Ancestral File for this family.
________

Also Connie, please keep in mind that all the information I discovered about Sarah Griffith Lewis, was taken from online sources. I never completely trust information online, but use it only as a finding aid until further research can be accomplished at places like the Family History Center, or County and Town Vital Records Centers, or historical and genealogical societies.

That's why it is best you pay a visit to your Family History Center to see the above Ancestral File entries, rather than view them online.

Concerning James W. Lewis and his family: I didn't have enough information
about him to do an online search for him. If you know what town or county he died in, I suggest that you try to obtain his death certificate. His death
certificate may tell you where he was born in Missouri. His death
certificate may also tell you who his father and mother were, and where they
were from.

Another thing you can do is obtain the birth and death records of James W's
children. The birth and death certificates of his children may give you
James W. Lewis's exact place of birth.

Without knowing the names of his parents, especially his mother's maiden
name, it will be very difficult to find more information about him.

However, I do have a possible candidate for your James W. Lewis. I own a
copy of the 1880 U.S. Federal Census of the Unitted States. I looked for a
James W. Lewis, who was born born in 1834 in Missouri, but whose father was born in Indiana.

I did find one entry that matches the birth place and birth year of a James
W. Lewis, whose father was born in Indiana. You will see that this James W.
Lewis had lived with his wife Mary and their six children in the town of
Webb, in Reynolds County, Missouri. The Lewis entry for the 1880 census is
below. I am only speculating that this James W. could be your ancestor.

___________

Again Connie, this is a very unorthodox way of doing genealogical research,
but with the information you have about James W. Lewis, at least the census
record may give you a reference point. Keep in mind that the census record
may not be your James W. at all.

I discovered at the Reynolds County GenWeb site that the county courthouse
which housed the vital records of births, marriages, and deaths, had burnt
twice. Once by the Confederate Army in 1863, and another time in 1871. All
of the Reynolds children, except for Richard W. Lewis, were born before the
second fire in 1871.

This means that if you tie your Lewis pedigree with the James W. in the census above, you may want to call the Reynolds County Clerk's Office to see if they have a birth record of Richard Lewis. You can also ask if any birth and marriage records survive before the 1871 and 1863 fires.

See below for the address and phone number of the Reynolds County Clerk:

Reynolds County Clerk
Courthouse Square
Centerville, MO 63633
(573) 648-2494

Death records for the latter part of the 19th century and into the 20th
century may be available.

If you contact the clerk's office, ask if there is an index of deaths for
the late 19th and 20th centuries. If there is, ask the clerk how much it would
cost to look up death records of the Lewis family.

The State of Missouri didn't begin to keep a systematic file of births, and deaths until January of 1910. Any of your Lewis ancestors who died on or after 1910, should be listed in the death records.

For information about the State of Missouri Vital Statistics, go to:http://www.vitalrec.com/mo.html

Do you have a guess about what James's father's first name was, or what his
mother's first and maiden names were? If not, are there any family members
who may? Or do you have an old family bible that could give you this
information?

At the Reynolds County GenWeb site I discovered there is a lady named Gloria Birlew Hursey, who will look up records for people interested in the Lewis surname who had lived in Reynolds County. Her email address is:
Ghursey2@aol.com

I found her name at the Reynolds County GenWeb page at:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~moreynol/sur002.htm

The main Reynolds County GenWeb page is at:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~moreynol/ if you would like to browse the site.

In the meantime, what you need to do is obtain the death and birth certificates of your Lewis ancestors, as far back as the records will allow you to go, to see if you can tie into the James W. Lewis family of the Town of Webb, Reynolds County, Missouri.

If your Lewis line does go back to the Lewis family of Webb, Missouri, you will have a match. Then you would need to search for the death records of James W. Lewis, and his children, to see if those mention the names of his parents, the towns where his parents were born, and James's place of birth in Missouri.

Searching the death and birth records of your Lewis family back in time will be the fastest and least expensive way of obtaining the information you are looking for concerning James W. Lewis.

I would also like to recommend a very comprehensive site called the RootsWeb Guide, which gives practical information about genealogical research in the United States and in several foreign countries. This site can be found at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~rwguide/#Are

___________

On another note. Were Sarah Griffith Lewis and James W. Lewis related in any way? If so, you may also want to search the Vital Records of available in Jackson County, where Sarah had died. Perhaps your James W. resided in that county.

Information about the Jackson County Clerks's Office can be found at:http://www.vitalrec.com/mocounties2.html#Jackson

In addition, the Jackson County GenWeb page can be found at: http://members.aol.com/TerR001/Jackson/Jackson.htm

I'm not sure if any of this information will be helpful to you, Connie, but if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to email.

All the best.

Dave Boylan
