Hello. I am trying to find a way to learn when my great-great-grandmother, Nellie (given name probably Ellen) BROPHY came to America.
The family oral history is very sparse; Nellie is said to have been born in Dublin. There is no family member still living who knows when she left Ireland for America. The family story is that she travelled from Dublin with her sisters, a set of twins, one of whom died on the voyage.
Nellie is listed on the 1880 Federal Census for Orleans Parish, City of New Orleans, Louisiana. She and her sister are said to have become estranged, and not one of my older family members knows the sister's name.
According to the 1900 census for Orleans Parish, City of New Orleans, Nellie was born in September 1847. She married Armand FORSTALL, but I have not been able to find a marriage record for them. The state of Louisiana does not have a death record for her, and the church death record does not give the kind of information for which I am looking.
Are there ships passengers lists for vessels leaving the Port of Dublin, 1860-1880? If so, are they on microfilm, and how may I obtain them? I don't know if Nellie and the surviving twin sailed directly to New Orleans,or if they disembarked at some other port, and later, sailed to New Orleans.
Please help me if you can.
Thank you.
