I also found an extracted birth/christening record for Alfred Hemans at Ancestry.com’s “London, England, Extracted Parish Records.” See below:

You’ll notice in the above records that there are two indexes for Sophia Hemans and two indexes for Lucy Hemans. This is an indication that the first born Sophia and the first born Lucy had died, and that their parents had named children they had later, after them.

Next I found a copy of the actual marriage record for John Hemans and Alcey, showing that Alcey’s maiden name was Morrison. This record shows the couple were married in the All Hallows Bread Street Church of England, London, by the curate, Samuel Warneford, on 25 January 1770. The witnesses to the wedding were B.W. Morrison, N. Lucas, another person named Sarah, whose surname I couldn’t decipher, and a person named Mary Ann Morrison.

The marriage record shows that at the time of the marriage, John had belonged to the parish at All Hallows Bread Street, while Alcey Morrison’s parish was St. Botolph, Bishopgate, London.

The record also shows that John was a widower when he married in 1770.

A copy of the original marriage record was found at Ancestry.com’s “London, England, Marriages and Banns, 1754-1921.”

A transcription of the record is below:

Knowing that John Hemans was a widower when he married Alcey Morrison in 1770, I wondered who his first wife was. I found an LDS index, showing that a John Hemans and a Sarah Schofield were married in the

The marriage record for John Hemans and Sarah Schofield can be found in LDS microfilm number 0380147.

I also found the marriage record in Ancestry.com’s “London, England, Marriages and Banns, 1754-1921.” In a copy of the original Sarah’s maiden name is spelled Schoffield. The original record also shows that the church’s curate, Thomas Skinner had married the couple and that John Gardiner and Elizabeth Stimson were the witnesses to the wedding.

A transcription of the marriage record follows:

I then looked for any christening indexes for children of John Hemans and Sarah Schofield at the LDS website. Three children are listed, though Sarah’s maiden name is not given in the indexes. These children are John Henry “Heman,” William Heman, and Charles Hemans. These children, like the children of John Hemans and Alcey Morrison, were baptized in the St. John the Evangelist, Friday Street, Church of England, London, in 1764, 1767, and 1769, respectively. The three children below would be the half-siblings of the children of John Hemans and Alcey Morrison.

Next I looked for more information about Alcey Morrison. The following is what I believe to be her christening index In the index, her first name is given as Alice, and shows that she was christened in the Saint Stephan Coleman Street, London, Church of England, on 21 January 1747. Her parents are listed as Bewley Wynne Morrison and Mary.

If you go back to the indexes above for the children of John Hemans and Alcey, you’ll see that one of their children is named “Bowley Wynne Hemans, born on 1 December 1770, and baptized in Saint John The Evangelist Friday Street, London, Church of England on Christmas Day 1770. He, I believe, would have been named after Alcey/Alice’s father, Bewley Wynn Morrison.

Alice’s christening index was found at the LDS website and comes with microfilm and microfiche source information:

I didn’t find the christening indexes for any other children of Richard Morrison and Elizabeth, and so I next looked for Richard and Elizabeth’s marriage index. I had wondered if Bewley’s middle name, Wynne, was actually his mother’s mother name. With this in mind I uncovered their marriage index showing that Richard Morrison and Elizabeth Wynne were married on 2 August 1710 in the Saint Benet and Saint Peter Church of England, Paul’s Wharf, London. The marriage record can be found in LDS microfilm number 0845242 and in microfiche number 6903497:

Next I wanted to see if I could locate the marriage index for Alfred Hemans and Felicia. I didn’t find a marriage for them, but did locate the christening indexes of five of their children. All were christened in the Parish Church of St. Asaph, Flintshire, Wales. These children include George William Hemans; Claud Lewis Hemans, Henry William Hemans, and two indexes for a Charles Lloyd Hemans, which indicates the first-born Charles Lloyd Hemans had died young.

All the christening indexes include the middle and maiden names of their mother Felicia, which was Dorothea Browne.

Getting back to the Hemans genealogy, I wanted to see if I could locate any further information about Alfred’s brother Bewley Wynne Hemans, because of his unusual first name. I found that Bewley had been married twice, in a record called “Pallot’s Marriage Index for England: 1780 - 1837,” which was accessed from Ancestry.com.

Both marriages took place in the St. Martin in the Fields Church of England. Bewley’s first marriage was to Charlotte Dixon in 1791. No month or day is given. His second marriage was to Selina Bazin. This marriage took place in 1824. Both indexes follow:

Bewley and Selina were married for only a little over a year, as Selina had died and was buried from the Parish All Hallows Bread Street & Saint John the Evangelist, London, on 27 October 1825.
