Five years ago you would of found almost nothing on the internet but slowly the County Heritage Centers are giving up at least a taste by joining certain free to view but pay to get a copy. Then you are supposed to get them to do further research. It makes things so much more accessible. These County Centers were funded by the government as a way to bring tourists to Ireland, however, the counties who set them up decided it all had to be on a fee for service basis, many charging 50-100E for a search. They have some amazing databases, some still not accessible. It meant visiting individual parishes churches and obtaining each parishes information. So a lot of work went into these centers. The original idea for for tourists to come and be able to do their own research was hijacked, the auditor general on a review felt the government should take back the databases and put them in public libraries where the public could then access them, however, this hasn't happened.
