Hello Caffy
Your John Doody was son of John Doody and Esther Byrne born in Tinoran, Co Wicklow (on the border with Co Kildare). At the time of his marriage on the 9/9/1875 he was living in Grange Hall, Co. Westmeath. His wife Bridget Doyle was born in 1846 daughter of Mathew Doyle and Catherine Doyle of Castledermot. The Doyles arrived in Castledermot about this time from God knows where.

Yours
Michael J. Wall

PS would you have a copy of a photo of John Doody as I am a local historian/genealogist for the Castledermot area.

I'm looking for the ancestors of my great-grandfather. I know that he was born in Carbury and that his family was wealthy. But I can't find any information on his father, mother and siblings (if he had any). If someone could help me, that would be great.

Here's some extra information that may help:

He was a bookmaker before he joined the CIE (Railway).

He married twice, but I don't know who the first wife is.

His second marriage to my great-grandmother, Mary Power was in the 1920s and they had 15 children. I don't know the exact date. The information I have on the Irish side is very sketchy.

He died around 1977 in Mullingar.

Hi Seamus,
Thank you so much for the information and links, which we are working through at present,i see what you mean by being careful on the kildare.brsgeneology site i thought i was on the right track and found myself buying and not getting what i was after,so i will be more careful on that one.I did find a site Irish Certificates,
and have ordered the birth certificate for John Doody which i am expecting any day,so fingers crossed.Re Esther Leigh, went back into the 1911 census for Belan and found they lived in no 32, Esther,James and son John, their other son Patrick was on the night of the census was with John & Bridget.
Re Maria Doody, i am also on the same train of thought that she was the illegitimate child of Catherine Doody, and i would'nt be surprised if there is no registration of birth if she were born out of wedlock and quite possibly Catherine never married because of it.Thanks again.

Hi Cathy,
I think the parish might be Castledermot. You can e-mail them at cces@eircom.net . Ask them if the town land of Belean is in the parish. The general register office http://www.groireland.ie/research.htm can provide photocopies of register entries at a cost of 4 euro each. If you search http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#start you will get 1) registration district, 2) year, 3)Volume, 4)Page No. Submit this information to GRO (with 4 euro) and you will get the photocopy.
You could also try http://kildare.brsgenealogy.com/ . This website has information available on-line at 5 euro per record. You need to search very carefully before you buy because you can very easily get carried away and spend a lot of money without getting any relevant information.
Re: Esther. When I saw grandson Patrick Leigh living with John and Bridget I guessed that his parents may not be far away. A search showed Esther and her husband living in the same townland who had two children but only one child on the census. To me that was only circumstantial evidence but you already knew there was an Esther. So, it has to be the same family. It's not so easy with Maria Doody's parents. I can't find anyone in the census that could be her parents. Unless she was the (out of wedlock!!) child of Catherine Doody.

Best regards,
Seamus.

Hi Seamus your a legend, thank you so much, this is fantastic, it is starting to piece together the jigsaw puzzle of John Doody,i got the 1901 census for the Doody family and with both 1901 & 1911 have now got all 6 childrens names, this is so fantastic. How would i find out the name of their Parish Church to get birth certificates, and how did you find out that Ester Leigh lived nearby?
I live in Melbourne Australia so i am doing this rearch with my brother James Doody in Omagh so with time differences it can be a bit challenging.
Thanks again regards.
Hi Caffy49,
First I checked http://www.cwgc.org/debt_of_honour.asp?menuid=14 and found details of J Doody. He was a Sergeant in the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. It gives his service number and batallion. If you contact them they may have information.
I then searched http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?P...
for John Doody born in Co. Kildare and found John born 1 March 1877 son of John Doody and Bridget Doyle. I also found Mathew born 19th July 1879 to the same couple.
I then checked the 1911 census at http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/
There I found John aged 67, Bridget aged 55, Mathew aged 33, Thomas aged 30, Catherine aged 23 and two grandchildren.
John and Bridget were married 36 years and had 6 children, all still living in 1911. Their daughter Ester Leigh lives nearby. Their address is Belan which is about 3 miles north of Castledermot.
I hope this information is of some use.

Best regards,

Seamus.

Hi Dale,
It seems that my Dunn side is related to your Thomas Dunn somehow. You mentioned they were in the same grave at Melbourne General Cemetary. My great great grandparents were Patrick Dunn and Bridget Kennedy. They married on 1.3.1840 in Youghalarra (Nenagh Tipp)witness James Dunn (can't track him down anywhere). Patrick was from Ballintogher and Bridget from Ballywilliam. They took assisted passage to Sydney on the Joseph Cunard along with Bridget's sister Mary and her husband James McNamara and his brother John and wife arriving 28 November 1841. Patrick's parents listed as Catherine and Patrick and Bridget's as Roger and Ellen Kennedy. Patrick jnr had been born in Nenagh Tipp. on 5.12.1840. Witness at his birth was a William Dunn and Eliza Dunn. Bridget died in Melbourne 3 Jan. 1857 age 44 from hepatitis and Patrick on 4 May 1857 at 45. They had 4 children after Patr. jnr - Rodger 15.1.1843 b. Sydney (my great grandfather) Catherine b. 1845/46 (can't find her anywhere) Ellen 20.3.1848 b Melbourne and William 1850/51 Melbourne (can't find his birth cert.) but all children were acknowledged on the death certificates of Pat and Bridget. I would love to know who else was mentioned on the Dunn family headstone in Melbourne.
I cannot find Patrick's birth, his parents death or any of his siblings in Ireland.
Have you managed to find the connection between the two Dunn families yet?

Regards Dee

The Mylerstown you speak of is just outside Nurney in Co.Kildare(don`t know if you mispelled it as Murney by mistake).Do you know if the Pendergasts were from Athy as well if so we`re probably related as my maternal grandmother is from a place called Kilcoo just outside Athy. The name Pendergast can sometimes be also known as Prendergast.Census records for Kildare in 1911 are online at the moment through the National Archives here in Ireland if that is any help. Also there`s a pay for view records site just google kildare.brs that has birth/marriage/death records.Hope this helps.

Parish records would contain baptism records prior to civil registration a check of both RC and Church of Ireland records vary for each parish, C of I Naas 1679, Rathangan 1880+, RC Naas 1813 and Monstereven 1819.
RC records except for those held at the National Library in Dublin are held in local custody. Most parishes are on-line now, Church of Ireland, Protestant (most of Gentlemen/Esquire) were Protestant) and the parish records are held at the Church of Ireland Representative Library in Dublin up to 1899 after which they are held in local custody. Both require personal visits.

AC

Guestimate of dates or a general idea of time frame and some people names would be helpful.
There are 8 Marsh names in the current phonebook:
www.eircomphonebook.ie
There are just 15 Marsh births from 1804-1898 in a database for Kildare. Eliza, Bridget, Rose, Eliza Edith, Annie, Peter, Henry George, Daniel, Michael 1, John 2, James 2.
Without a time in history I will give you the Griffith Valuations for 1850:
Peter Marsh, Mylerstown Parish, Calfstown Townland leasing a house and land 1 acre 3 perches 4 roods
John Marsh, Mylerstown, Calfstown leasing house and land 3A 2P 15R.
Directories of Ireland Pigots 1824 & Slaters 1846
In 1824
Jeremy Marsh, Esquire, Rathangan
Francis Marsh, Esquire, Rathangan
In 1846
Philip Marsh Esquire, Sabine Cottage, Monastereven
You would need the 1824-26 Tithe records to see if they owned the land themselves or were head tenants - Esquires and Gentlemen (farmers) would lease from a large landowner such as an Earl or in the case of Philip & John a Viscount Harberton they earned their money from their sub-tenants rentals.
You could try a Library for Estates held by the Nobility for more information.
I looks through the Index of Wills and Deed Records, nothing for either in Kildare. I note throughout my looking about that often the name MARCH came popping up. Many names has different spellings in the early 1800.

www.familysearch.org is a good website but nothing unless I missed it for Kildare. However, if you go to the new PILOT found under 'search records' you will find 103 Marsh records. You can obtain these by clicking on the underline names for the microfilm numbers and taking them to your nearest Latter Day Saints History Center to view the film.
Anything after 1864 you can get records from the General Registry Office, Dublin www.groireland.ie
I also have a CD with births from the Civil Registration but only for the years 1864-1875, if you have any names that fit in that time period.

Annette Code
'genealogy for fun'

ps:Rathangan has a big data base of bmd's but I don't remember the website, so you could probably just google that.

Hope you don't mind my jumping in: There were 14 Michael Timmons born in Kildare from 1790-1857, any idea of his age?
Christopher Timmons were born 1810, 1816, 1855 and 1857, both 1810 & 1857 had a father Michael.
Elizabeth Perkins births 1815 and 1859 - no marriages
4 Marriages for the name Michael 1854, 1873, 1882 and 1899.
No records for Dublin City.
Griffiths Valuation is a census substitute but guessing at Michael's age as born 1849 he would of been too young to have his own land. Thee were two Timmon's in Kildare at this time Patrick Timmons, Churchtown Parish, Cardington Townland leasing 19Acres; Stephen Timmons, Parish Killashee, Mullacash, N. Townland leasing house, office and land 15Acres.
In the Directories there were 4 names which came with two spellings, Timmins, Timmens and Timon. Timmins for 1894:
Dora Timmins, Shopkeeper 1 Clarendon Row, Dublin
James Timmins, householder 14 Summerhill Parade
Joseph Timmins, bootmaker 175 James St.
Samuel Timmins, clothes broker, 1 Dawson Row
Kildare:
1824 Patrick Timmons, Public House, Kildare, Kildare
1881 Catherine Timmons, Williams St. Athy, Kildare

Two of my favourite websites for Ireland do not have much for Kildare:

www.censusfinder.com United Kingdom+Ireland+Kildare

www.igp-web.com + Kildare

www.familysearch.org now has a new PILOT program where there are records for bmd's. This program is found under 'search records'. For bmd's after 1864 you can get copies from www.groireland.ie or take the microfilm numbers to your nearest Latter Day Saints History Center to view the film.

I have a CD of Civil Registrations but only for the years 1864-1875, and Christopher 1869 is not on it for Kildare nor Dublin (County Dublin). I then removed the county and made it all Ireland, but the only Christopher had different parents. The only explanation I can think of that this CD doesn't include Dublin City itself. I also tried leaving the children blank and just putting Michael Timmons and Elizabeth Perkins as parents-no matches.

I looked at the 1911 Census but couldn't find a Christopher that would of been around 42 in Dublin. No Michael age about 72, nor an Elizabeth Timmons of the right age.

Thought I could be helpful but I can't be.

Annette Code
'genealogy for fun'

Hi Annette
I certainly don't mind you "jumping in" - I'm delighted for any and all help I can get!!
To reply to your email:
* My g-grandfather, Michael Timmons, appears to have been born c. 1842-1844 (his age on 1901 census is 57, and in 1911 age 69), so if any of the 14 Michaels 1790-1857 were born around then, I would be delighted for the info.
* I was convinced for the last couple of years that "my" Michael married Mary Kelly in Carlow in 1865, but have disappointingly been proved incorrect (long story!). But I can't find any other marriage of a Michael T to a Mary K - this probably means they were married pre 1864, and since I don't know where or when, I'm stuck!
* Thanks for the info on Timmons (and variations) in Dublin and Kildare - will keep it on file for possible future reference.
* I tried the LDS pilot site but it hasn't been any help - as you are probably aware, the records are badly incomplete. For instance, not one of my father's siblings are listed, but luckily I know have all their info already.
* The reason Christopher Timmons b. 1869 is not on your CD is because he was born in Dublin City in March 1869 - so you're correct, the CD doesn't contain Dublin City listings.
* Thanks for looking at the 1911 Census. You're correct about no Christopher being listed (I can't find anything for him except his birth and christening record - perhaps he died/emigrated?). But Michael g-gf is definitely on the 1911 census as age 69.
* Elizabeth Timmons married my grandfather, Christopher O'Rorke in 1907, and they are listed in the 1911 census.

Again, thanks very much for your help, and I would be delighted if you could give me the info on any Michael Timmons born Kildare 1842-1844.

Happy hunting!

Hi
I know its a long time since you posted your query, but I've only just seen it!
My great grandfather was Michael Timmons, born Kildare according to his 1911 census (but born Dublin on his 1901 census, so I'm not sure!). Also not sure of his father's name, but I do know for certain that he called his first son CHRISTOPHER, and as you probably know, usually the first son is called after the father's father. Christopher was born in Dublin in 1869.
Michael married Mary Kelly (I think from Carlow).
I have the details of all of their children, starting with Christopher in 1869 and ending with my grandmother, Elizabeth Timmons, in 1880.
Any connection, do you think?
Look forward to hearing from you.
Colette O'Rorke

Unfortunately I don't know anything about her parents or siblings or even where she was married. Her husband, John Carroll was a train driver in Dublin and when he died she ran a dairy in Drumcondra. I have tried for years to find out more about her but so far I have failed. I can't see any connection with your Elizabeth but I cannot rule it out.
Aldridge and Gleeson families Athy Co Kildare

Hi

I'm looking for any information on William Aldridge and Rosanna Gleeson who married in 1916. I believe that they lived in Duke St Athy.

William's brother Thomas married Bridget Gleeson in 1913 and i believe that he emigrated to Canada.

Other Gleeson siblings were Ellen, Mary, Eliza, Catherine, Michael, Edward, Anne, John, James, Patrick and Julianne.

Any information would be great.

Kidja

Thanks for info, Clerk at Naas parish records office was very helpful and gave births, baptisms, parents, godparents etc. over the phone. Marriages pre 1900 had to be obtained from Dublin records office but as you said, only by visiting records office.Obtained 1901 census info for 5 euro's a time from Irish family History Foundation and 1911 is now all on line and free!
