I'm on a quest based on the following information I have. A John A McClanahan/McLanahan born about 1817 in Maryland, named His first-born son, Glendy B McClahanan/McLanahan. I suspect his given name might have been John's mother's maiden name. Glendy was born in Sabine Parish LA about 1849. John is on the 1850 census there & he died about 1853. Does anyone have any information that could help me?
There were a Dunns in the Parish of Dunboe in the 1831 census and the 1858 Griffiths Valuation. An early document listing Dunboe could be mistaken for Dunrone. There was also a Dunronan Townland in Desertlyn Parish. However, there were no Dunns in Desertlyn in the 1831 census.

Ron

I understood that Thomas emigrated to Nova Scotia that's all I know about him and I think Joseph went to Coatbridge in Scotland.Their father was Stewart White of Edenmore and there were at least 6 sisters. Thomas appears in the 1911 census of Fruithill, Limavady. I have more if you think I can be of help.
Vivien

I found none of these Duncans in the records of the 1st Magherafelt Presbyterian Church or the Castledawson Presbyterian Church.

I note that Robert Duncan and Joseph Duncan both died in Portglenone, Ballymena Antrim. Are you sure that they were from the Magherafelt area? If you are, I will check out some other local records.

I note that Robert Duncan and Julia Courtenay registered a child in Porlegone in 1869 (no name listed) and another (Robert) in 1871. Robert and Julia were married at the Ahoghill Church of Ireland on July 20, 1861.

I strongly suggest that you look for your Duncans in Antrim rather than Derry.

Ron

Ron

My ggg-grandmother was Margaret Jane McCook who came with her family John McCook (father) & Jane (Neil) McCook (mother) to Quebec, Canada. They are believed to have come from Londonderry Ireland. I was wondering if anyone researching this area has found either surname; McCook or Neil?
Does anyone have any ideas where I could look?
thanks so much

Heather

You cannot search these records on line, unfortunately. Nor are they available through Ancestry and such companies. You have to actually go to Belfast to research the records or find someone to do it for you. Hopefully someone on this Rootsweb site has done so for that church.

I have done so for the Presbyterian and Church of Ireland churches in the Magherafelt area, but Comber is outside of my research area. Incidentally, there were Gardiner/Gardner families in the Magherafelt area that probably emigrated from Scotland to Ireland at the same time as the Comber branch.

Good luck,

Ron

Thank you for the wedding cert information. It's very interesting comparing it with the record of my great grandfather, Patrick Quigley to Sarah Deeny at St Eugenes Catholic Cathedral in 1881. His residence at time of marriage was Racecourse, Derry, his father was Robert Quigley, Witnesses were Michael Hargen and Fanny Cassidy. Both marriages have same address, father and both have a Cassidy witness.

Regarding Barr history, I'm afraid I don't have any, other than knowing that my g grandfather had a sister who married a Barr. I grew up knowing they were cousins to my dad, and knew Jacky Barr when I was a child. The Barr family lived at Pennyburn around 1960 when I used to visit my grandparents at Shantallow, they then moved to Shantallow when it was redeveloped. Jacky Barr died in the last few years, I will try and find out the names of his parent's and let you know.

It might just be coincidence, but my grandmother also used to own a house at Bogslea which the Barr family lived in. I have not been able to pinpoint exactly where Bogslea was.

Among other names related to my family were Deeny, Crown, Houston, Doherty, Ryan, O'Hagan, Downey, Kelly. Some of the Quigley family also went to Scotland and America.
My great grandfather Patrick Quigley born about 1860, was the son of Robert Quigley. Patrick had a sister who married a Barr. The date of your Quigley/Barr marriage is certainly around the right time for Ellen to be my g grandfather's sister. I remember my dad's cousin, Jacky Barr, who we used to call uncle Jacky when we were children. I think we could be related.

Do you know what Robert Quigley's wife was called and what other names are on the record. If you would let me have the record no. I would like to get a copy of it.

I don't know where Thornhill district is. I will have a look for it.

Thank you
Moira

the people I have are;
Robert John and William Quigley all born about 1800 - 1820
in Inishowen in the Buncrana area - at least thats' where I found them through Griffiths valuation and the spinning wheel lists etc.Robert married a Jane Quigley (though not necessarily her maiden name) John married Anne Cameron and William also married a Jane but I don't have her any maiden name. I have no proof but I believe them to be brothers.
Robert I believe had 4 children one of who, John was my ggreat
grandfather. I have just published a book on all the stuff I have in Blurb.com and if you are interested the title is 'The Roads to Edinburgh Book 2' and it includes all the research I have done on the Quigley family.

There don't seem to be any Benjamins down the line. John & Eliza's children were: Margaret, Alexander, Robert John, Mary Jane, Eliza Margaret,William John, and Henry.

On Eliza's marriage license it notes a William Sargent as witness. I am hoping to connect them as siblings. On census records he also showed as having children: Margaret, Robert, Ann Jane, Sarah, Frances (after his wife), William, John, Eliza & Myriah. William was born in 1811 Ireland.

Robert, John & William seem to be the most used male names .... for many generations. And Eliza shows up everywhere!

Thanks for the info. I'll work on some of those threads. If worse comes to worse, I'm planning a trip next summer so I can sit in those record offices myself.

Hugh Mcdermott married Eleanor(Ellen) Toner 24.8.1868 at Waterside Chapel

The above are my great great grand parents, who came across the water to Scotland, almost immediately, and lived 'til their deaths in and around firstly, Shotts, then Cleland (only 5 miles apart) in Lanarkshire.

Hugh's parents William & Rose (Tracy) McDermott also ended up in Cleland, as did one brother John, Eleanor's mother also died in Scotland, though there is no sign of her husband, Robert Toner a Kilnsman at a cornmill on the marriage certificate. It doesn't say he is deceased on the marriage certificate, as it would say here, is it correct to assume therefore that he was alive at the time of the wedding?? I've traced him to a man of the same name and living next to a cornmill on Griffiths valuations, in 1858 - at Lismacarol, so I'm pretty sure this was Eleanor's long time home address.

I would love to hear from anyone who might have info. on these 2 families, or might be related to siblings of Hugh & Eleanor. The witnesses on the marriage certificate were an Edward Tracy - a relative I guess on Hugh's mothers side, and a Sarah Toner - possibly a sister of the bride!

Any help really appreciated!

If I've left any obvious info out I'm sorry - desperately trying to summarise the info. I think is important.

Thanks again
Jane
Hello Barb,

Usually when people emigrated they left family behind. A brother would take over the small farm in Ireland while the rest of the family set off for Canada or the US or Australia or whereever. The Griffiths Valuation from the 1850's is a good source for finding out who stayed back and therefore can give a clue as to the Townland from which your ancestor emigrated. Here are the Sargents from County Derry from the GV:

Griffiths Valuation, 1858

SARGENT	WILLIAM LONDONDERRY	ARTREA	BALLYMULLIGAN
SARGENT	EDWARD LONDONDERRY	ARTREA	BALLYNEILL MORE
SARGENT	WILLIAM LONDONDERRY	BALLYNASCREEN	DERRYNOYD
SARGENT	BENJAMIN LONDONDERRY	BALLYNASCREEN	DERRYNOYD
SARGENT	BRYAN LONDONDERRY	BALLYNASCREEN	MOYKEERAN
SARGENT	JOHN LONDONDERRY	BALLYNASCREEN	MOYKEERAN
SARGENT	MARY LONDONDERRY	BALLYNASCREEN	MULNAVOO
SARGENT	ELIZA LONDONDERRY	BALLYNASCREEN	MULNAVOO
SARGENT	JOHN LONDONDERRY	BALLYNASCREEN	MULNAVOO
SARGENT	JAMES LONDONDERRY	ERRIGAL GARVAGH

The Parish (eg Ballynascreen) and Townland (eg Mulnavoo) are listed. These are the primary tenants--the leaseholders and not the whole family. I will also have a look in the 1831 census to see the distribution of Sargents at that time.

Ron Dale

I would take an educated guess at the records being in the Draperstown Church of Ireland in Ballynascreen Civil Parish. The Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) has three reels of microfilm covering Ballynascreen Church of Ireland records (Mic/1/329-331) but these can only be accessed at PRONI in person or through a hired researcher. I have no idea what the latter costs.

However, the Ballynascreen Historical Society has been very active in the past and you might want to get a hold of this group. They have a number of useful publications available.
Of course this could be a dead end but worth a shot.

There were Sargents in Artrea Parish(near Magherafelt) but I have found only one Sargent reference in the records of the Magherafelt and Woods Chapel churches of Ireland in that area. There might be some in Saltertown Presbyterian and I will check that for you.

In the 1831 Census there was a William Sargent and an Edward Sergent as Heads of Households in Artrea, John Sergent in the Parish of Magherafelt, the widow Hana in Desertmartin, and a whack of Sargent/Sergent heads of household in Ballynascreen. Does the name Benjamin carry in your family?

Ron

Hello Jim,

You probably already have the information that James married Catherine on June 9, 1867 at the Moneymore RC Church and that they registered at least two children, Arthur (born Sept 8, 1868) and Mary (April 17, 1870). I also found the marriages of two Arthur McCann's at the Moneymore RC Church in the same year. One Arthur McCann married Sara McKibben on Oct 26, 1833 and another Arthur McCann married Mary Timoney at the same church on September 11, 1833. This could complicate the research unless you have already sorted this out!

I noticed in Griffith's Valuation that there were two Arthur McCanns in the Parish of Lissan: one in the townland of Ballybriest and the other in Mobuy.

You might be interested in joining Ballymaguigan Roots, a group of researchers descended from inhabitants of the Magherafelt area of Derry. If so, email me at ronaldjdale(at)netscape.net and I can send an invitation. A number of RC church records have been transcribed by this group. I concentrate on the Presbyterian and Church of Ireland records for that area of Derry.

Ron Dale

Hello Bill,

I am not really searching in this area of Derry. My people were living a little south of that near Castledawson and Magherafelt (townlands of Anaghmore, Tullylinkisay and Ballymulderg Beg. There was a Dale family in Garvagh but I suspect that they came from around Ballymena, Antim over the Bann to Garvagh. They were related to my Dales but back but the branches split about 1680. I know this from DNA. Like the Dales, the Hendersons likely came out from Scotland at the time of the Plantation and you may find from DNA that all of these Ulster Scot Hendersons descend from the same dude.

Ron

PRESBYTERIAN RECORDS, LOWER CUMBER

Can anyone point me in the direction of records from the Presbyterian church at Lower Cumber, Claudy, please? My ancestor, William Gardiner, was born in Tonduff or Toneduff townland, Lower Cumber parish in about 1834. I think his parents may have been John and Esther (nee Cunningham) Gardiner, but this is guesswork at this stage.

I just saw your post. Would you have an Arthur McCann, whose daughter Catherine married James McCann? Catherine was born in 1844. Thanks in advance for any information you may be able to provide.
Jim McCann

I, too, have Quigleys from "Derry" and one married Esther Love in Ireland. They came to America about 1850 and eventually settled in western New York State where my father, Herbert James Quigley was born. We might have some connections here and would enjoy sharing my research.

Many thanks for getting back to me Wil. You may hold the key to a major break through for 'my Henderson family research'. We are having real trouble in tracing my Great Great Grand Mother - Matilda McCloy and a record of her marriage to my Great Great Grandfather - Thomas Henderson. We only have an entry in Thomas Hendersons bible of the date of marriage. I have e-mailed you via this site separately to make talking easier. But if anyone reads this and needs further info or updates please contact me.
