Francis Sweeney/Sweeny born in Leitrim in 1851

Looking for any information on Francis Sweeney who, according to his RIC record, was born in Leitrim in 1851. He married Rose Ann Campbell in Letterkenny, Donegal on 11 Nov 1886. On his marriage certificate his father's name is given as Myles Sweeney and he is described as a 'Farmer'. Not stated to be deceased so therefore considered to be alive at the time of son's wedding. On the marriage certificate Francis's surname was spelled 'Sweeny' but his father's was spelled 'Sweeney'. Francis was my maternal great grandfather. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
Frank

I too have an interest in the name Matthew GREEN, born in Leitrim Ireland. My gg-grandfather, Matthew GREEN was born in Fenagh Parish, Leitrim in about 1807. He joined the British Army and these facts were found from army records. He died young, at the age of about 33 in Canada, while on active service, but it was not in warfare. It looks like he just left one child, my g-grandfather, Matthew Francis GREEN, born 1833 in Antigua, where Matthew senior was serving at the time. His wife, Mary, seems to have died before him.

Since it seems that there were not so many GREENs in Leitrim at that time, it seems likely that any Matthew GREEN from Leitrim was related to other Matthew GREENs from Leitrim. I would like to make contact with anyone else who is interested in the name GREEN in Leitrim in the early 1800's & 1700's.

Chris Green
gelin5 "at" yahoo "dot" com
LDS films 926129 & 979703 contain some parochial records for both Drumreilly Lower and Drumreilly Upper Catholic parishes. Check http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.a... for details.
.
For location of the townlands you list visit http://www.leitrim-roscommon.com/LR_maps.html
.
For Catholic Parish maps and LDS film numbers for Tithe Applotment (1833), Griffiths Valuation (1856) and change of occupiers of land from c1856 to 1920, check your local library for the Resource County Leitrim CD.
.
Unless you are very rich I suggest you don’t pay for Irish research until you know how the system works.

John
www.roscommon.info
there are not a lot of cryan family in leitrim. i thought my cryan was from sligo. going through the griffith val. i see a patrick cryan town of carrich on shannon main st. and a james mcgowan same town leitrim road. my 2 g.grandfathers are patrick cryan and james mcgowan. bartholomew cryan married mary mcgowan, in england, in 1886. then came to usa. so maybe they are from leitrim, don't know. if in your research you come across anything, love to hear from you. they were from kiltoghert, the only cryans i saw in leitrim. thanks and God bless

YOu posted a message sowing a Janes GReenan and Bridget Reilly wth a date of 1874. I had a relative James GReenan born of these two people but he was born in 1869. Do you have any records which show a James Greenan or Green born of James Greenan and Bridget Reilly?

I knew Caleb Laird, he was the owner of the top business (folded some years ago)in Drumshanbo, not only did the Laird family own the jam factory, on the same site they also ran a flour mill, and a wholesale food business, they also supplied the town with electricity from a water powered generator which was used to power their business.
Eventually main line electricity arrived in Drumshanbo and there was no need to use their generator.
After Caleb died the business was run for a while by his son 'Master Raymond' (i kid you not) but eventually folded.

The Laird family were held in high esteem by the locals as they were great benefactors to the town.

As I said earlier I am trying to see what connection there is, if any, to my mother's family to the Fitzpatricks or to the McGoohans.

Are your McNultys from Cloone?
I can only see one family there - at Halls.

Peter McNulty married Bridget Tiernan on 6th Jul 1849 and 4 children are recorded:
Patrick 1856, Peter 1859, Bridget 1861, Catherine 1863 and Thomas 1868

Hi,
I read your post and I wondered if it was possible that the Hunts that I am researching are related to the ones that you are referring to?
I have been looking for almost a year, with no luck, for the family of Thomas Hunt (from Kilkenny, Ireland) and his wife, Catherine Cox (from Leitrim, Ireland).
From the Catholic Church records in Oregon, I found out that Thomas Hunts parents were Thomas Hunt & Margaret Roche. And then Catherine Cox' parents were James Cox & Mary Kilkenny.

On a 2007 trip to Ireland I went to Kilkenny and they said there that they couldn't find any records for these people and that it was possible they meant Killkenny Townland, which is in County Galway.

Also, I know that Thomas came to America in 1845 and then to Oregon by the 1847 Wagon Train.

Anyway, I just wanted to see if you could possible shed any light on this situation for me! :)
Thanks!

Hi, I have recently started researching my family history and I think we are from the same family. I am the grand daughter of Teresa Wynne whose was born in Arigna, County Roscommon. She moved to Edinburgh, married and had 9 children. She knew very little of the whereabouts of the older brothers, but Maggie, Teresa and Elizabeth settled in Edinburgh. I would be interested in swapping information if you are still carrying out research.

Caroline Miller

Hugh Fox from County Leitrim - Married Ellen Smith

My great-grandfather was Hugh Fox b Jan 1848 in Leitrim, m Ellen Smith (B Apr 1852) in 1872. They had 6 children, that I know of, Annie, Catherine, Patrick Augustus, James, Ellen, and Mary. He emmigrated to Providence, R.I. in 1884 and his son, Patrick, emmigrated to the same place in 1886. The rest of the family followed later. In the 1900 Providence, R.I. census it showed a cousin, Thomas Huren age 19, living with the family. Is anyone looking for information on any of these people?

John, thank you for this information but I'm afraid this is another family. My Hugh and Ellen were married in 1872 and the first child, Annie, was born in 1873. Their Mary was born in Jun, 1884 and James was born Apr, 1877. I think they were in Drumreilly Parish but I haven't been able to prove that yet. I have sent an email to the parish preist and am hoping he will reply. I guess I should have said I think they were from the Drumreilly parish and I have a location of Aghawillin. Somehow the Huren family fists in also. As I said, I haven't been able to prove that yet. Thank you for researching this for me.

My GGrandmother, Ann McHugh, daughter of Francis and Catherine, emigrated from Drumna to America (New York) in 1903 at the age of 19. The 1901 census records show Francis was 59 years old, as well as two James McHugh's, aged 64 and 72, and a John McHugh, also 64, all of Drumna/Drimna, Cloone, Leitrim. Do you know what year(s) your ancestors emigrated?

Duffy Family from Leitrim and Roscommon - Scotland and US

My GG Grandad was Michael Duffy from Drumshanbo in Co Roscommon (born 1831, died 1891) and my GG Granny was Annie Wynn from Drumkeeran in Co Leitrim (born 1844). They married 1863 in Roscommon. They had Mary (b1864), John (b1866), Hugh, my G Grandad (b 1868), Lizzie (b1876), Bridget (b1878) and Thomas (b1879). They came across to Scotland sometime between Bridget and Thomas' births and settled in Falkirk. My GGGGrandad was also Michael Duffy and he married Anne Burn (Byrne?)- they were also from Co Roscommon. The family had a farm (still have?) at the south of Lough Allen.

My G Grandad Hugh then married Barbara Walker and one of their children was my Grandad Michael Thomas Carlos Duffy. The Carlos is interesting - until recently we thought there was a Spanish connection however it seems that Carlos is an Irish surname so there must be a close connection given that my Grandad's got Carlos as a middle name.

As another matter of interest, it's thought that one of my G Grandad's sisters emigrated to the US - that would be Bridget Duffy, Lizzie Duffy or Mary Duffy (all of these women would have been born in Co Roscommon or Co Leitrim). Thought in the family was that it was Lizzie (Elizabeth) Duffy who emigrated - she was born in 1876 so likely left Glasgow or Liverpool in the 1890's - believe she landed in New York. Have found an Elizabeth Duffy b 1876 living in New York in the 1901 census (notes that she's been resident for 4 years)but not sure if it's 'my' Lizzie.

I know it's not much of a summary but am interested to see if it rings any bells with anyone out there. I'd love to find some connections.
