Hi eghubbard_1,
This is good info, Thank you. Although cannot verfiy a link, it is plausable that this Mary Haslam was a sister to my Jonathan Haslam, making John and Anna (Belton) Haslam his parents, and Thomas J. and Anna M. Haslam his grandparents. The timelines, location, and names all fit well. Do you have any more info or a tree for this group of Haslams? I am convinced that all of the Haslam in this region of Ireland are related.
Thanks, Gary S.A. Haslam, gshaslam@telus.net

BRANDON family in Abbeyleix

George G Brandon was born at Abbeyleix, Queens County, Ireland 21 June 1827. He was a saddler and harness maker by trade.

His brother, William Brandon, also a harness maker, was born around 1823 in Ireland.

This Brandon family was Protestant, not Catholic.

George and William came to the US from Ireland (separately, first George, then William) before 1850. George G Brandon and his brother William came through New York and settled at Bridgeport, Fairfield, Connecticut, which is where they can be found in the 1850 US Census.

George married Susan Finnegan in 1853 at New York and they moved to Nashville, Tennessee. George died there in 1858, with one son surviving him.

William stayed at Bridgeport, CT. I believe he was married to Mary with whom he had a son named William (b. 1853), and a daughter named Mary C.(b. 1855). By 1860 William's wife, Mary, is no longer listed in the census record.

Any futher information on this family would be greatly appreciated. I have been unable to track my Brandon roots back to Ireland through George, so I am hoping someone will have info to share on William.

I have the George G. Brandon Family Bible with his birthplace and date, but not his parent's names.

Thanks,
Colleen

Dear Maureen. I know that we are related but your John Wesley Sexsmith is not mine..just the same name and both from Ontario to start with. Yours went to western Canada and mine went to Virginia City, Nevada.
I firmly believe that anyone with the last name of Sexsmith are related from the families that moved to Canada in the 1800's from Ireland. It was a made up name at that point. They arrived in Canada as Sixsmith (that is the name from Ireland and before that Lankashire England..they were sickle makers) but it changed in Ontario Canada, I am guessing because of the Irish brogue. It caught on quick and I guess you know there is a Sexsmith, Canada.
Would love to keep in touch. I have a lot of information on your John Wesley, but I am sure you have it also.
Barbara Taylor

Hi Geoff i'm from The Joseph Patrick side of that generation, he was known as 'Oddy'. I've been looking more into patrick and have found him listed in the 1851 census under the name patrick phalan, living with his mother ann and brother and two sisters.
Ann is shown to be widdowed at this time, but it suggests she, not patrick was the first generation to come from ireland. I'm currently trying to get Patrick's wedding cetificate to get his fathers name and that may lead me to a better location in laois, ireland. Still not sure on the origins of the cattle rustling rumour !

I am trying to trace details of family of Georgina Grace Greene Maurice (b. 1854 Abbeyleix) and Samuel Maxwell (b. about 1836). The 1911 census shows that they had 13 children born alive and 8 still living. Just one appears on census form living with them, Herbert aged 14. Samuel Maxwell is described as grocer and sub postmaster, living at Glebe, Durrow, Queens County.

If anyone knows anything about this family I would be really grateful.

Would also like to dicover what happened to the family of James Maurice, Georgina's brother, who was a tenant farmer of De Vesi's in Abbeyleix at Watercastle, Granafallow and Kilamuck. They were evicted in 1885. Alternative spelling maybe Morris. His wife was Kate Talbot, children born before eviction were Elizabeth, Sarah, Frances and Robert born 1880 -1885.i dont know if there were more children subsequently as have been unable to trace what became of the family.

Kath

Noting those that were in attendance at her funeral in 1915, it should emphasized that her daughter Agnes Bridget Gaffigan also did not attend her funeral, as she had relocated to Ireland.
In July 1912 she boarded the "Celtic" and sailed for Cobh, or Queenstown as it was known at that time, and arrived three days before her marriage to Michael Joseph Carroll or McCarroll of Beragh, County Tyrone.
In 1914 they had their first child while living at George Street, Omagh, County Tyrone. Later they were to move to Fintona where they owned a public house on Main Street.

Births in the 1870s in Ireland were registered. A check on the FamilySearch site shows several John Carters were born in the Abbeyleix district in the mid 1870s. These records can be ordered at any Family History Centre to check for the names of the parents. I would then compare those names to the names of the children of John and Daisy in an attempt to sort them out. I also noted some deaths listed in Abbeyleix for John Carters born in the mid 1870s. Those could help you eliminate some of the Johns who were born in the 1870s.

You don't give any dates for "Daisy" Thompson. Daisy is almost certainly a nickname--do you have any idea what her "real" name was? And do you have dates? Do you know who her parents were?

There were many Carters and even more Thompsons in the Maryborough/Mountrath/Abbeyleix areas of Queen's county in the 1800s. It can be quite a challenge trying to sort them out!

Re: illusive ancestor - Michael Lowry

I have found my great, grandfather (Michael Lowry) and my great, great grandmother, Mary Gillens, were married by Rev. Father William Whitly (not Whitty) at the RC Chapel, Henry Street, St John's, Nfld., on the l8 November, l822. His best man was Michael Brennan of Horse Cove, NL and most likely due to family lore, was a relation. Their Maid-of-Honor was Emma Gillens, the bride's sister, of Portugal Cove and they were daughters of Edward Gillens (Jennings now) and Bridget Gillens, nee Nairn and daughter of Patrick Nairn of Beachy Cove, Portugal Cove, NL who arrived here from County Kilkenny, Ireland about l775.

Michael and Mary Lowry's marriage may be found in Book 2 of the records of the Basilica of St John the Baptist, St John's, NL and a copy is on file at The Rooms museum at St John's as well. Their marriage certificate proves that Michael Lowry was born at Stradbally, then Queen's County, now County Laois, Ireland. His age is uncertain but family lore suggests he died in the late l860's at Horse Cove, NL when he was 91 years of age. My grandmother Elllen Lowry nee Emberly told me about him. She lived from l861 to l954 dying at Horse Cove. The Lowry name is still at Stradbally, and there is information on line that their son Edward Lowry, sent money from St John's to build a church in Stradbally. The change in spelling came about shortly after my grandfather's (James Lowry) death on November 22, l924. Those Lowrys who died before the beginning of the RC Cemetery at St Thomas (name changed by government from Horse Cove to St Thomas upon publishing the same in The Newfoundland Gazette, April, l922) and in l992 the Town of St Thomas was by government amalgamated into the Town of Paradise-St Thomas. Shortly afterwards there was a name change again by government and the Town of Paradise covers among other areas the old village of Horse Cove and later the Town of St Thomas which was incorporated a town in October, l977. First elections were held in l978 when seven councillors were elected from a list of l5 candidates. Both my teacher-brother Philip Peter Laurie and I, Michael J. Laurie, then a practising lawyer, were elected councillors and sworn in office in May, l878. Richard Squires waa then chosen by council to be its first Mayor and Gerald Lawlor served as Deputy Mayor.

Lowry spent some time a fugitive in the Sliebh Mountains as he fought the British on Ireland's side and was Roman Catholic, but he was born in Stradbally and most likely at Loughteeog which is nearby since under the Test ACts, inter alia, Catholics could not lawfully live in a municipality at the time and Stradbally was incorporated long before Daniel O'Connor's achievement in getting a bill enacted into law in the British Parliament in London, UK which emancipated Catholics throughout the Empire about l822, though the Act was not operative in Nfld till the governor was recalled in l832 and Representative Government for the colony, was begun.

Family Lore states that the Lowry family came to Queen's County, Ireland from near Edinburgh, Scotland as planters sometime in the reign of William and Mary. No records of same found as yet but we will keep the search ongoing.

this is my ggggf, i have traced his christening record to mountmellick, laoighis (queens county) Ireland, his christening date was 5/2/41, his parents names were micheal and Mary (no further details of this).
I believe he married Ann coleman in Leeds 1867 (J/F/M), Ann died in Leeds in 1893.
I am part of the Whelan family that still lives in Leeds today, for what its worth the oral history of Patrick (as told to me by my grandad)is that he came over from Ireland possibly with his brother (either Joseph or vincent), that they settled initially the otherside of the pennines. The family story goes that they found conditions hard here and therefore in order to better their circumstances they were involved in a cattle rustling incident that saw them relocate to Leeds with funds from their illgotten gains!
Patrick at some point set up a tripe butchers shop in beckett street in Leeds (i belive there are images from this time showing this)
His son Willie or vincent w was a aster plumber with a premise either at the same location or on the same road.
Hope this helps,
Thanks
Gareth Whelan

Hi Gemma,

There are so many Delaney's around Ballyroan that it's very hard to 'join the dots'. A look in the phone book might be a start for names you would know.
www.eircomphonebook.ie
Where are your relatives buried?
If you are looking for living relatives, then the phone book is your best bet.
(The reason I know about the Delaney's is becuase my wife is from Cullenagh, Ballyroan)
Hi Michelle,
Exact address where Jack(John) Rudd lived in is Ballyhegadon, Donaghmore, Co Laois, about 4 miles off N7 in Borris-in-Ossory.
It is about two thirds way between Ballybrophy and Donaghmore on left hand side as you go from Ballybrophy to Donaghmore. I don't know who current owners are, but previous owner was Albert Wallace who is now deceased. Long standing locals would know where Wallaces lived.
Regards
Liz

Margaret was living with one of her sons named 'John' Rudd. Margaret passed away in 1921 and I believe John in the early 1950s. Would this be the same John to you think? The address Ballyhegadon fits the census.

Hello
If I were to visit this area what would be the exact address of the house John Rudd lived in do you know? Margaret Rudd, John's mother, was alive when the 1911 census was done living here also.
Kind regards, Michelle
