Brereton ALLEN & Tempey BROWN marr. 1840

I am trying to learn the parents and siblings of Tempey (Temperance) BROWN who married Brereton ALLEN in 1840 in Leinster Province. His name (or his father or uncle's) appears in Griffith's Valuation in 1851-2 at Troger and there's a Joseph Brown at Maryborough at the same time who may relate to Tempey.
This couple were in St.Calixte de Kilkenny, Quebec by the 1851 census. Also in St.Calixte were other Browns who appear to relate to my husband's gggm Mary Brown. I am trying to learn how Tempey may have related to Mary in order to determine whether Mary came from Laois, too.
Does any of this ring a bell with anyone?

Johnstown RC parish - covers Laois

The Roman Catholic parish of Johnstown is not listed as a parish for County Laois, whilst the Roman Catholic Parish of Galmoy is. Galmoy and Johnstown are just a few miles apart, and people from Laois do feature in the roman Catholic parish records of Johnstown, Co. Kilkenny.

Listed below are townlands which are found in the marriage records of Johnstown 1856-1857
Townlands listed (including all variations of spelling & questionables as I read them!): 7 Sisters - B.Spellan - Ballycuddihy - Ballyellis - Ballyphillip - Bawn - Bawn Aughra - Bawnaghra - Bawnmore -Bayswell - Beggar - Beggars - Beggars...?town - Beggars?town - Boglane - Bricana - Bycuddy - ByDonnell - ByPhillip - Castletown - Coo?lpatrick - Coolaclanin?tta - Coolaclaunish - Coolaultha - Coolnacrutta - Donaghmore - Galmoy - Garrybawn - Garrylawn - Glashare - Glishare - Graigue ?more - Graigue Lower - Graigue town - Graigue Upper - Graiguegannon - Graiguegarron - Grange Johnstown - Kyle - Lavally - Lough - Ralogue - Rapoleen - Rath... Heen - Ross - - Sharavawn? - Shrabbawn - Shrabhawn - Shragh - Tillavolty - Tullivolly - Tullyvolly - Whites Wall - Whiteswall - X Patrick

An index to all the marriages listed in this set of parish records covering the years 1856-57 is now online, but not on my county Laois web site.
http://www.kilkennygenealogy.com/rc/johnsm51-56.htm

There are other records for Johnstown also on the site, but they are not formatted in the same way as the marriage records.

Jane Lyons
I am hoping someone may be able to help me with two villages, Clonbrock and Garrendenny in Parish Killabban, Co Laois.
I have found who I think are my family members in the Grittith Valuation in these villages.

I think Civil Parish Killabban is split between the RC Parishes of Arles and Doonane.
I can not find these villages on any maps. Does anyone have a clue where there may be. Or is there a website with a map of the parish with these villages in the 1850s?
Clonbrock was mentioned as Clonebrocke in the 1600's.

Researching Whelan/Whalin/Tobin/Brun in Parish Killabban.

Portlaoise or Maryboro, Gravestone Photographs

I've called this the new graveyard in Portlaoise, it's not so new as the earliest stone in this set of photographs is for 1894 - not so old as some other graveyards either though, but it may be of interest to some.

This time I have indexed the names, year of death and placenames mentioned on the stones presented. This is only the first of a few sets of Portlaoise photographs and if you read the blog entry on my Irish Gravestone place you'll get some idea of the time taken to organise bringing a set of photos on line. Taking the photos is the easy part!! :-)

Surnames appearing on these stones (some of these are secondary names on the stones and will not be found in alphabetical order - consult the Surname index to get the stone reference number) : Ahern - Allman - Aloway - Barry - Bergin - Bland - Bowe - Breen - Brennan - Brett - Brown - Buggy - Burke - Byrne - Cahill - Carroll - Chester - Clarke - Clear - Cleary - Coady - Commins - Connell - Conroy - Coonan - Cooney - Cripps - Culbert - Cummins - Cunningham - Dalton - Dargan - Dea - DeCourcy - Delaney - Dempsey - Dollard - Doody - Doran - Dowling - Doyle - Dunne - Dwane - Egan - Farrelly - Fennell - Finnegan - Fitzgibbon - Fitzpatrick - Flanagan - Flynn - Galloway - Ging - Gorman - Graham - Green - Guilfoyle - Hanlon - Haslam - Healy - Hendrix - Hennessy - Higgins - Hinds - Houlihan - Howard - Hunston - Hyland - Ireland - Irwin - Kavanagh - Keenan - Kehoe - Keogh - Kerry - Lacumber - Lalor - Larkin - Lawless - Lynch - Maher - Malone - Marum - Mathews - McCormack - McDonald - McEvoy - McGill - McGuire - McKenna - Metcalfe - Molloy - Moloney - Moore - Mulhall - Mullins - Murphy - Murray - Nelius - Nelson - Nolan - O'Brien - O'Donovan - O'Gorman - O'Regan - O'Reilly - Paisley - Pender - Pilkington - Polisar - Powders - Preston - Quinn - Reardon - Redmond - Reilly - Rigney - Robinson - Roche - Rowney - Ruth - Scully - Shaw - Sheehan - Sheridan - Sherran - Sissons - Stapleton - Sydes - Taylor - Terrill - Territt - Thompson - Timmins - Tynan - Tyrrell - Walsh - Welby - Whelan - Whelan - - Wrafter - Wright

Photo album can be found at:
http://www.laoisgenealogy.com/graves/portl1/index.htm

Surname index with years, places and stone reference numbers begins at:
http://www.laoisgenealogy.com/graves/portl1/names1.htm

Un-edited photos, those with no names or which are illigible or partly so and have stone references can be found at my Graveyard blog site. Also, I have included a photograph taken of a map of the cemetery in the actual blog on this graveyard. That photo is not included in the album on http://www.laoisgenealogy.com or on the album for Portlaoise on the blog site
http://janesirishplace.spaces.live.com/

Jane

Also looking for Wilde family burial ground, referred to in several Abbeyleix Wilde obits.
DELANEY, Catherine b c1836 and TIERNEY, CORMACK

FACT: My GGM, Catherine DELANEY arrived Australia on the "BEE" 6th January 1856. I have the Immigrants List and the Immigration "Inspection" page copies. Catherine was "20yrs, TempleDerry? (OR TempleHarry?), Queens Co., (parents) Andrew and Catherine Both Dead, RC, Reads, 2 first cousins Anne and Mary TIERNEY in Sydney, (health) Good, Paid One Pound". The "Immigrants List" sheet says the same and adds, "Farm Servant". I assume Catherine was born c1836.

I think Templederry above is more likely TempleHARRY

FACT: There is an Ellen DELANEY, 22, shown on the "BEE" and the NSW records says "and sister", but I have no evidence that Catherine came with a sister. The Immigrants List mentioned above for Ellen shows "Gowran, Kilkenny" and "father dead, mother living in Sydney" so I think Catherine was not related to this Ellen.

FACT: Cousins Ann (sic) and Mary TIERNEY, 18 and 20 respectively, arrived Sydney on the "ELLENBOROUGH" 1853.

There is later CLARKE family history such as baptisms etc which show TIERNEY participating in baptisms etc. TIERNEY, plus PRIESTand FITZPATRICK feature often.

FACT: Catherine married my GGF, Richard CLARKE, 18th November, 1863, in the RC Church, Mudgee, NSW (Cert.2413/500). No parental information or birthplaces recorded. (Mudgee was somewhat a 'frontier' gold rush region then.)

According to a private history of Fitzpatrick and Tierney which I have, Catherine DELANEY's father was Andrew DELANEY and the mother Catherine CORMACK. No other details.

This history says that John TIERNEY married Anne DELANEY 3 February 1823 in DUNKERRIN, Offaly, Irl. Both had died before 1853 when their 4th and 5th children went to Australia. The suggestion is that Anne DELANEY and Catherine's father Andrew DELANEY were brother and sister, hence the "2 first cousins in Sydney" for Catherine.

My PROBLEM: I cannot find where Andrew DELANEY and Catherine CORMACK were married, and where Catherine DELANEY, my GGM, was born (along with all the other history). I can only assume that they lived close by the TIERNEY familes. Anne and Mary TIERNEY (and other siblings) were born BALLYDONOUGH, Kings Co.

Dunkerrin, TempleHARRY, and Ballydonough seem to be coming together as the area for Catherine DELANEY's birth, and the RC church wedding of ANDREW DELANEY and CATHERINE CORMACK.

Would really appreciate any assistance with this marriage of DELANEY and CORMACK, location, dates, etc, and of Catherine's baptism etc.

My grandfather was born in Stradbally in 1888.
His parents were Martin Dunne and Mary Scully.
His siblings were:
Martin Dunne jr. dob: May 23, 1880 in Inch, Laioghis
Mary Dunne
and Margaret Mary.
There may have been other siblings Brigit, Basil or Katherine? - one sibling died in Belgium with her children in a concentration camp - her husband was in the underground and was caught and killed - confirmed by the Red Cross after the war.
My grandfather talked of the family farm they had for several generations and of fishing on the River Leif.
When his father Martin died none of his siblings wanted to continue farming. Martin JR's daughter Mary Anne and her husband took over the farm.
His mother Mary Dunne (Scully) died around 1915 or 1916.

I'm looking for any information to help me -
Thank you in advance for any information you have!!!
Dianne
dfgross@rogers.com

DELANEY and TIERNEY to AUSTRALIA c1856

Catherine DELANEY and sister Ellen DELANEY went to Australia on the 'BEE' in 1856 to meet up with cousins in Sydney, Anne and Mary TIERNEY.

Anne and Mary TIERNEY were children of John TIERNEY and ANN DELANEY, who both d. before 1856. In 1856, the remaining TIERNEY siblings went to Australia on the 'DAVID MCIVER' - Michael, Ellen, Patrick, Timothy, Johanna and Honora - to meet up with Anne and Mary.

It is possible that their mother, Ann DELANEY Tierney, was the sister of Andrew DELANEY, deceased father of Catherine and Ellen DELANEY. The mother was possibly Catherine CORMACK.

I have a brick wall.

I cannot find a birth/christening for Catherine or Ellen Delaney, c.1835-1838, nor can I find a marriage of Andrew Delaney and Catherine Cormack, or deaths/burials.

As the DELANEY and TIERNEY connection is confirmed, locating the TIERNEY church records would probably lead to the DELANEY location also, but I cannot find that info. I've tried IGI etc.

Can anyone help? I'd appreciate it!

What's happened to the National Archives putting the 1911 and 1901 census online?

Dublin City and County 1911 went online in December 2007, 7 months late.

Now nothing has happened with any other census records. Has the National Archives dropped the ball? What's the problem?

Taken from an article published in the Ossory Archaeological Society Proceedings, Vol III, Part. II, c.1900 written by Rev. W. Healy.

information on surnames Baldwin, Delany, Sawyer, Trench (Offaly) and others

"Towards the close of August 18XX, I paid a visit to my former fellow curate and esteemed friend, the Rev. John Bowe, C.C., Camross. It was with no little enthusiasm that I started on my journey, in accordance with his previous invitation, for I felt that the "mountain of most beauteous rivers" which I was soon to climb, would command from its summit by far the most extensive view of pleasing scenery I had as yet ever witnessed. And not only this, in the heart of "the delightful Coill-Uachtorach (Upperwoods). I would also find the old ruins of Anatrim, on a gentle declivity, overshaded by trees whose arm "entangle in clustered fellowship-where monks once worked "marvel," and where, more than thirteen centuries ago, the iron tongue of the Abbey bell "o'er tower and roof rolled its solemn chime." The spot is within a stone-throw of the little village of Coolraine, and just by the conflux of the rivers Delour and Tonet. At present it preserves nothing of its olden greatness. Obliteration.............

Rest of article at the following URL
http://www.laoisgenealogy.com/hist/off1.htm

CONROY, 6 families, Co. Laois to Wis., ca. 1850s

In the 1850s-1860s six families of CONROYs settled on neighboring farms in Pierce Co., Wisconsin. Most records just say Ireland for birthplace, but two say Queens County and one tombstone says "Glabe, Queens Co., Ireland". Three of the families are headed by a James, and the others by Thomas, Rody, and William. Rody's wife was Margaret SCULLY, also from Glabe. We can't find Glabe on a map, and are wondering if it's a townland. Would anyone have heard of Glabe, and know where it is - and what Catholic parish the residents would probably have attended? Many thanks for any help you can give us.

Seeking "any" information or resources to further my research into my Irish Haslam ancestry.
My great-great grandfather, Jonathan Haslam, was born in Mountmellick, Queens County about 1796, he married about 1820s to 1835 to Mary (maiden name unknown, maybe Henesey), Mary was born about 1804-1808. Jonathan and Mary Haslam/Haslem are thought to have had several children, however, in the absence of Census Records it is not known how many children they had. Two are confirmed so far, my great grandfather, Alfred Haslam, born February 1841, Mountmellick, and William, born about 1835-37, Mountmellick.
Jonathan immigrated to Canada through the Port of New York January 26, 1849; Mary, William, and Alfred immigrated mid 1850s. It is not know if they came together or if other siblings also came. No passenger ship list/manifest have yet been found.
Any information, assistance, or direction that can be provided would be very greatly appreciated.
Gary S.A.
Hi there,

My paternal grandfather was Michael Lowry, who is listed in the Griffiths valuation as a tenant of the Rev.Richard Deverell, leasing two properties from him. He also had four tenants himself: Catherine Delaney, Martin Delaney, Denis Kennedy and Dennis Mullowney.

One of his sons, John, became a barrister, admitted to both King's Inn Dublin and Gray's Inn, London. He married a Margaret Butler, and had at least five children.

The family was living in England, probably London, by the early part of the twentieth century.

Is there anyone out there who knows anything about my family?

My great grandmother was Catherine Fallon, born in Bilston, Staffordshire, England approx 1860, daugter of Irish immigrants Thomas Fallon and Catherine (maiden name unknown)Fallon. Great great grandfather Thomas Fallon born approx 1840 in co Laois (possibly Clonaslee) to Bridget DUNNE and Patrick Fallon. Bridget Dunne was born in co Laois approx 1820, daughter of Thomas DUNNE. Bridget's husband Patrick Fallon died young and Bridget remarried to James May in Chesterfield Derbyshire, England in 1860. Bridget Dunne and Patrick Fallon had at least one other child - Michael Fallon, also born around 1840 and married Margaret Quinn in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England in 1867. All were living in Whittington Derbyshire in 1870's and early 1880's.

Per search of Griffith's primary valuation - there were only 3 "Fallon" entries - one of which was in Mountmellick (where there were also Dunnes).

Does anyone have access to the TITHE APPLOTMENT records for Clonaslee or Mountmellick - wondering if any FALLON's are listed??

Thank you.

I have loaded photographs taken of gravestones in the churchyards of St. Fintan of Clonenagh graveyard, Cromogue, Co. Laois to my Laois genealogy web site. The oldest stone is dated 1737.

http://www.laoisgenealogy.com/graves/cromogue/index.htm

Some of the stones could not be read and then only the surname or a name or two could be made out on others. I have loaded the photographs of the illigible and partly legible stones to my Irish Graveyard blog site at:
http://janesirishplace.spaces.live.com/

Jane
http://www.laoisgenealogy.com
http://www.from-ireland.net

Hi,

I'm looking for descendants of my Great Great Grandparents, Lawrence Gorman and Margaret Kearney. My mother was told that they came from Mount Mellick in Ireland.
They came to England somewhere around the 1860's and lived in Bradford, West Yorkshire.

There is at least one person on this site who has relatives that match, but I have not received a reply to my messages. Probably because they've ended up in the Spam folder!

If you are related or have any information, please get in touch as my family is relatively small and so it would mean alot to me.

I am trying to trace any information about my ancestors. They were French Hugenots living in I beleive Portarlington. My grandfather Edward Gerrard Rabbette or Edward Gerard Rabbett was born in September 1901 in Portarlington. His father was also Edward Gerrard Rabbette and could have been the other variation as above. I have been told that at some point my great grandfather was a Police Inspector. I have no idea when great granddad and great grandma were born or where they lived exactly. I don't know if anyone has any knowledge, obviously through history as to any info on this family. I have also been told that my great grandparents left their land etc to the Church. I would be ever so grateful if anyone can throw me a lifeline please. I know it is probably a long shot but hope and pray someone can come up with some info.

Regards

Kathryn

I have been informed that my great grandfather was a member of the Royal Irish Constabulary. I have googled this and so far cannot come up with names in the records. There are a few books to be bought at some expense but wonder if there is anyone out there who may have access to a record of the serving officers etc. I also found a site that lists all officers killed during their service with the RIC. My great grandfather was Edward Gerrard Rabbette also name given as Edward Gerard Rabbett. Unfortunately I cannot give any exact dates but my grandfather was born in 1901 if this is any help to ascertain how old my great grandfather would have been and as to what period of time he would have been in the RIC.

Regards

Kathryn

I am looking for any information on the Dunne families living in Bogtown, Dereen, and Bracknagh County offaly, Ireland in the late 19th and early 20th century.

In the 1901 census it shows four families living in Bogtown and Dereen and as they are such small hamlets, its possible the families could all have been related.

The families in Bogtown in 1901 are:
- Patrick Dunne born 1826 (Farmer) Bridget born 1841 (Wife) Michael born 1881 (son)
- Mary Dunne born 1855 (Widow, Farmer);James born 1878 (Son); Bridget born 1887 (Daughter).
- Daniel Dunne born 1855 (agricultral Labourer); Bridget born 1856 (wife); Daniel born 1885 (Son); Denis born 1887 (Son); Antony born 1891 (Son); Elizabeth born 1895 (Daughter). I beleive there is also another son John my great grandfather known as 'Jack the Kite' born in 1886, who was not at home when the census took place, he married Winifred Young in Blackburn, England in 1914, where he was serving in the Irish Guards, they both returned to Bogtown, Offaly, in the 1920's.

The family in Dereen in 1901 was:
John Dunne born 1847 (farmer); Anne born 1858 (Wife); Catherine born 1856 (sister)

I am also looking for any information on Jenny Dunne born about 1895 from Bracknagh, Near Portarlington who married Thomas Watson believed to be from Athlone around 1920. They had two children Annie and Thomas, I believe Annie my grandmother was born in Liverpool in 1923, but I have been unable to trace her birth certificate, so she could have been born in the Bracknagh area, where she went to school. Thomas her brother returned to Liverpool at about the age of 17, married and had at least two children, he was a postman at some point in his career, but my grandmother never saw him again after he left for England.

Jenny had two sisters that we know of Mabel whom we believe married a Brierton and a Farrell and Elizabeth whom I have no details on.

I have Dunne's on both sides of my Grandparents James Dunne & Annie's Watsons families so any information on any of the above that could help me piece together the puzzle, would be much appreciated.

lands of Ballykin

Hi,

I have an article from the Irish Law Times & Solicitors Journal (2 Apr 1870, pp 258-260) regarding an appeal by Cecil Percival Stone of a deed his mother, Anna Matilda Stone (nee Hawkshaw, married Valentine Stone) made with regard to a life estate of "lands of Ballykin" (her father, Major General Thomas Hawkshaw, had left her the life estate of these lands in his will). Cecil's younger brother, Alred Freeland Stone, was given the bulk of her estate and Cecil only "one square yard" of land of his brother's choosing. Alfred was lost at sea, so his son James Winder Stone inherited. The lands were sold possibly about 1866 but the legal wrangle over the proceeds continued.

Does anyone know where these "lands of Ballykin" were situated or ever heard of these families? The lands must have been pretty substantial as when the lands were sold they "produced £5480".

Thanks for your help.

Regards

Olwen

Kingsmill family near Roscrea, Ireland

I am trying to find out more about my Irish Kingsmills.

My GGGG grandfather, Henry Kingsmill (b. ca. 1745), was a retired soldier, having served in Gibraltar in the 59th Reg. Foot, following on, living in Borris in Ossory (living there in 1824), I presume where he held land. He was a sub-sheriff.

It would appear to me that most of Henry's family of his generation and that preceding were military men. It also appears to me that many of the family may well have been members of the Royal Irish Constabulary and I know two of his sons came to Australia where they worked as sheriff's bailiffs in NSW.

Several other cousins also came to NSW and worked in the early prison system, policing or as bailiffs. I suspect that this was a government initiative of the time using former RIC men, as I do know that the Victorian Police force developed from the RIC and used former RIC men.

Looking at the scattering of Kingsmill's it would appear that they were closely related, with Kingsmills located at Donaghmore, Borris in Ossory and Templemore, all being in close vicinity to Roscrea, the nearest market town.

Incidentally, a foundation Connemara stallion by the name of Mervyn Kingsmill was bred by the Countess de Vesci in nearby Abbey Leix during the mid 1960-70's, and I am looking into the connection given the proximity to our Kingsmill clan.
http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/mervyn+kingsmill

I am wondering if anyone had any further insight into navigation of our Kingsmill family in Ireland? I would be most pleased to make contact with you! I am having some trouble in tracing Henry's generation's preceding. I have included some excerpts following that you may wish to comment on also. In a couple of months I will be visiting Ireland and hope to learn more about the family whilst there.

Cheers

Maree Worthington

Exerpt
Irish Migrants in the Canadas, a new approach

By Bruce S. Elliott

Published 2004 McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP

ISBN:0773513213

p. 159

No early cluster of Tipperary Protestants formed in Toronto in the 1820’s and 1830’s as had in Montreal, but Toronto was then a much smaller centre. Nonetheless, a few gentlemen and prosperous merchants established themselves in the city at various times. The first of these was George Kingsmill of Templemore, a former soldier who came to Toronto in 1829 and ran a provisional store in Market Street. He later became high bailiff and an aide to Sir Francis Bond Head during the Mackenzie Rebellion. Kingsmill was an uncle of Thomas Frazer Kingsmill who came to London in 1865 via Georgia and Toronto and established the well-known London department store, Kingsmill’s.

KINGSMILL’s Website

http://www.kingsmills.com/aboutus/index.html

Our Heritage

In 1865 Thomas Frazer Kingsmill, an Irish immigrant, opened a dry goods store on the main street of London, Ontario, Canada. Over the years, the Kingsmill family has continued to offer fine products and services from this location. The family history represents a proud tradition of retail service to residents of Southwestern Ontario and beyond.
All of their children were born in Ballybrittis I believe.

I have tried searching for Michael and Jane with no luck.

Hello, we are currently researching our family tree and have followed a paternal line through to Queens County. There we have come to a deadend ! Any help would be very welcome.
We have a Patrick O'Neil born c1840 and a Mary {unknown} born 1842 both from Queens County, sorry i can't be more specific than that ! They had 9 children the first two who were also born in Queens County, they were Mary O'Neil 1865 and James O'Neil 1867. They then moved to County Durham in north east England in 1867, 1868 or 1869 as their third child Edward O'Neil is registered there as being born in 1869. The family worked generally in the coalmines around the Durham area. Thanks in anticipation of any help.

Co Laois results in Whelan/Whalen/Phelan/Phalen yDNA Project

We have results for a new member with ancestry in Co Laois in our Whelan/Whalen/Phelan/Phalen yDNA Project.

Kit 99152, who's ancestor was Michael Phelan born 1760 and lived in Durrow, Co Laois Ireland. This family have tested to 67 markers and match 33/37 with Kit 87011, who's family are from Co Waterford.
We have another family of Phelans from Durrow, who has also tested to 67 markers, but the two lines do not match at 67 markers. Ancestor John Phelan born 1759 Durrow.
They match well at 25 markers, indicating there is a common lineage, many years ago, but that they are not related in the last few hundred years.

We have results for 5 members with connections back to Co Laois, aswell as other members with connections back to Kilkenny, Tipperary, Waterford, Wexford, Cork and Dublin. Our members come from the UK, Canada, USA and Australia.

There must be many more Whalen, Whelan, Phelan families out there related to these men.

For all results and submitted lineages, you can check out our website at;

The testing company is also offering "Holiday Season" discounts for new members. We have gift certificates for 4 new yDNA and 2 new mtDNA kits.

For any queries on the project, please email myself.

Regards
Frances James
Whalen Project Co Ordinator.

My mother at 89 has always longed to know the details of her mothers birth and so for many years i have tried my best to find out all to no avail. I have found her two sisters one born in Emo Gate (1879), the other in Kilmalogue(1876) and my moms mom in c1894. I have sent of numerous cheques with all the dates going asking for birth certificates all to no avail, knowing the parents hasnt helped either so added together maybe she was not their sister after all there is a large gap in their ages. They were all brought up as sisters and one witnessed my grandmothers marriage. Where do i go from here obviously if i lived in Dublin i could spend a week in the records office and search all the births for around that year with the name Harriet as this is impossible i am asking for advice on where to go next.
Alladvice gratefully received.

Gilly

Clonkeen is one of those overgrown graveyards, not the easiest to find - and to be found in the middle of a farmers field.

Sue, isn't it you who said you have Walsh's buried here? and they may be, but the stone can't be read, sorry to have to tell you.

I've loaded the photos I took i nthe old graveyard at Clonmeen to my web site at:
http://www.laoisgenealogy.com/graves/clonkeen/index.htm

I'e given names to those photos for which I could read the surname on, and a few which are general, but the rest no, I've just left them with the number this particular camera gave them. Maybe some of you can do better than me with the reading of the inscriptions, for the most part, those for which I've given a surname, all I can read on them is the surname

Jane
http://www.from-ireland.net
http://www.laoisgenealogy.com

My great, great grandfather Michael Lowry was born near the Slieve Bloom Mountains, most likely near Montrath,in Queen's County, now Co. Laois, Ireland, about l790. He immigrated to St. John's, Newfoundland, circa l8l0. He married in Newfoundland and my great, grandfather, Edward Lowry, was born at St. John's in l8l6. Family changed spelling to "Laurie" in mid l920's for no known reason. Trying to confirm his place of birth in County Laois and requests anyone having such information to contact me at above-noted E-mail address.

I am researching the above families. My 2 x great grandmother was Elizabeth Rudd who was born about 1860 in Ballybrophy. She came to NZ as a 17 year old in the late 1870s. I've not been able to find anything out about her or her family so am hoping someone may be able to help. Her fathers name may have been John (however her cousin had the same forename as her on his death cert so it may be incorrect). Her full name was Elizabeth Eleanor RUDD.

These are the names I am frantically looking for. I hope this is the correct method of placing them on the message board. The year would be in the early 1800's for all of them. Some are listed to be in Queens Co., which I know no longer exists as such.

Laois Genealogy is a new site being set up by Jack Mc Donald.
It will contain headstone records from over 120 cemeteries within Laois, plus others from sueeounding counties.
The site will also feature pictures from all cemeteries visited, plus a virtual tour of Laois, by photograph as pictures were also taken from towns and villages that were visited in the taking of these records.
No other county in Ireland has recorded such a detailed record of headstones and also at the moment, records are being transcribed from county records(kindly supplied to me by John Whelan)but this will take some time as the records are very poor.
You can visit a test viewing by going to Google and Laois Genealogy.
I would be very grateful for you comments via the site.
Jack

Ryans in Laois

I posted this query a couple of years ago and didn't get any response, but since I have a little bit more information, I thought I'd give it another try!

My great-grandfather's name is John RYAN, b.1896. He is from Ballygeehin, Ballacolla and he came over to New York in 1927 when he was 32 with Mary BOWE, b.1904, his soon-to-be wife. I know he was the youngest of 7 boys and he worked at a mill in Ireland. He came to New York as a carpenter.

At least the three generations previous also lived in Ballygeehin (Daniel RYAN, b.1844- 2ggf, Daniel RYAN, b.1798- 3ggf & Timothy RYAN- 4ggf). I'm getting the 1901 & 1911 Irish Census records soon, so I'll have even more information at that point.

I'd like to know if any of this sounds familiar to anyone out there. *fingers crossed*

Also, I'm planning a trip to Ireland with as much of the family as I can get to come, and I'd love to know if our relatives are still in the area. I'm sure there must be some since there were so many generations living in one tiny town. I found 4 Ryans in Ballacolla in the phonebook, but I'm not planning on just calling them up. How does a person go about finding relatives in the present day without being intrusive?

Last question: does Ballygeehin still exist? I can't find it on a map anywhere!

Thanks in advance for any help or guidance you might have. I always find it amazing that people help each other out this way simply because they can.

They then lived in a cottage at Derrykearn.

Mary died soon after giving birth to her second child (my wife) on 25/04/1939, somewhere in the Abbeyleix area.
Does any one have any information about a Dea family to which Mary (called Molly), may have come from?

My wife and I have found her Bowe relations, but they know nothing about the Dea family.
Attached is what we are told is a photo of Mary Bowe (nee Dea), sometime before her death in 1939.

I have loaded photographs taken in the graveyard around the RC church in Durrow to my web site at:
http://www.laoisgenealogy.com/graves/durrowrc/index.htm

These are not all the stones standing in Durrow, it's a reasonably large graveyard with a newer section far down the back maintained by the county council as far as I know.

Durrow town itself is in Co. Laois, but it lies right on the Kilkenny border and at some time, more of the civil parish used to be in Co. Kilkenny.

Civil parishes for which placenames are mentioned on the stones in Durrow, Aharney (Laois), Aghmacart, Attanagh, Durrow, Offerlane, Rathdowney.

Places named on these stones which are definitely not in Co. Laois.

The village of Ballacolla is on a crossroads, the church is on the Durrow road. I've read that before the church was built the people attended Mass in the parish of Clough - *BUT* when my father was buried in the old graveyard in Bordwell, the Priest from Clough told us all about how Bordwell used to be the parish, but Clough now is.

I know that the parish records for Clough in Co. Kilkenny, also in the Diocese of Ossory are on the microfilms which hold the records for parishes which are around Clough in Laois - the same parish records are on a film which holds parishes only located in Co. Kilkenny, so there's a mistake there. Someone else thought the same as me - that Clough in Laois, which is in the Diocese of Ossory should be on a film for LAois.

Anyway, the village of Ballacolla is in Laois, and there is a Roman Catholic Church in the village and there is a graveyard around that church - and I have loaded photographs taken in that graveyard to my web site.

They are at :
http://www.laoisgenealogy.com/graves/ballacolla/index.htm

Jane
