Hi,
I found out that the unknown Walsh man married to Johanna Hartnett was a fellow called Patrick Walsh. They had several children including one Catherine Walsh who married a chap called Dennis Sheehan who I think (but not quite sure about this part??) died on December 12, 1878. They all originated from around Limerick and Kilkare spelling wrong on the latter sorry). Funnily enough, I'm also related to Mary Bridget who I think had a daughter called Frances Josephine

Hi - I picked this up because it contains two of my family names Bennett and McGrath. They originated in Ireland but I only know that Edward James McGrath b 1821 in New York & was the son of a Harriett (Ramsay) who was b 1801 in NY.
Catherine Bennett was the dghtr of Daniel, the son of John Bennett and Lucy Witherell who were in Spitalfields London by the late 1700's. Catherine Bennett md EJ McGrath in 1832 in Shadwell.
It's a long shot but if this matches anything you have please let me know. Rgds
Wendy (London UK)

Many years ago when visiting Dublin, I went into a book store at Trinity College, and I read that Coll was a diminutive spelling of Collopy. I always wondered about the collopy and Eliz Coll Devalera connection with the Collopy name. My great grandfather Michael Collopy came from Patrickswell and came to the State in the 1848-1850 time frame. And settled in Lawrence, MA

hello Pat, I have just started to trace my relatives beyond my grandfather whom I knew very well. As soon as I get more information I will contact you. Going by your date of fostering I reckon your Tom Howard and my father jimmy Howard are of the same generation. I really need the 1901 census to get further back than my own Grandfather but I have bits and pieces of my father's memories which will help to place people in relation to me.
Tom Howard, my grandfather's cousin was killed freeing one of the prisoners Sean Hogan in the train station in Klmallock during the troubles. He is commemorayed on a Monument in ballylanders. My father's brother was a Tom Howard as well but he never married. I think we well may be related, distantly but as I said above I need to wait for the other census' to find out more.
My father is 91 yrs of age now and though he has all his faculties and memories he was the youngest in a large family, with a twin sister, in his family and therefore was further from and less interested in distant relations.
Where are you? Ireland or America.....
we kept closely in touch with my father's family but my grandfather was 92 when I was 17yrs of age and at thet time I was not so interested in finding my Ancestors further back.
All the best...Rita

The family
consisted of:
Parents Michael O'Brien & Catherine McNamera,
Children:Margaret 1860, Mary 1862, Patrick 1863, Joseph 1865, Bridget 1867, Agnes 1869, Michael 1870, Kate 1873. Joseph 1874, Frances 1877. In the 1880's the family lived in Dennark St, later they lived in Cecil Street Upper. One of the women may have been married to a man with the surname Roberts.

Pat O'Brien

Any information would be appreciated.
Hi, Thanks for the reply. My McNameras were from Limerick city, pretty far from Kilteely /Dromkeen. The McNamera and O'Brien names are extremely common, but I am pretty sure that the families I'm interested in were always from the city.

I have a bunch of Shanahan's on the maternal side. originally from Tipperary, but then Manitowoc county Wisconsin and Saunders county Nebraska.

Pat O'Brien

I am a serious Shoebottom family "hunter". I know that there were at least 3 distinct families who came to London Township, Middlesex County, Ontario from Northern Tipperary,Ireland.
--brothers James (1778), a 3rd GG of mine (h/o Ellen Blackwell), and Thomas (1803)(h/o Elizabeth Perce)and their sister Anne(w/o Charles Goulding), a 3rd GG of mine, as well as their parents.
--Stoney John Shoebottom (1787)and wife Rebecca Colbert, my 3 GG, with John's mother.
--James (1780)and Margaret Kennedy Shoebottom to whom I have no proven relationship. Several of this family moved to the US.
I do not yet know the relationship between these families who chose to pioneer so closely to one another, marrying into each other's families. I would love to hear from anyone with facts.
I do not know Ellen Blackwell's parents I am afraid. Years ago I corresponded with John D Blackwell when he was studying at Queens.

The first thing you need to do is to research Michael's civil and church records in New Zealand to find out where he was born in County Limerick. There's a list of the names of the towns and townlands at http://www.seanruad.com and select Limerick as your search county from the drop down menu.

With that information you would then identify if the church parish registers for his birth location in County Limerick and religious denomination survive and if so how they might be accessed. Many church parish registers don't survive back to his birth year.

His parents may or may not have been from that location but you could then seach the parish registers for that birth location to find out if their marriage record was there and their baptismal records.
Good afternoon:

This is the information I have on Mary J. Hogan

Mary was born on July 18, 1869 to John Hogan and Bridget Clohessy in Garryowen, County Limerick. She died on March 21, 1932 at her sister Margaret Hogan Reardon’s house in Troy, NY and is buried at St. Joseph’s cemetery.

My mother and aunts tell us that Mary’s sister Margaret (my gg mother) came to the US to live with her aunt Margaret Clohessy Foley, verified from the 1975 census, and Mary stayed in Ireland until she came over later on sometime. Everyone believes that Margaret came here to live with her aunt because her parents passed away but we do not have any evidence of that.

I found the following information on the website www.castlegarden.org. We believe this is the Hogan family bringing Margaret to the US on the ship City of Montreal. Mary came over, too.

BRID Hogan SPINSTER, 17, F, 6 Jul 1874, IRELAND, CITY OF MONTREAL
HONORA WIFE, 40, F, 6 Jul 1874, IRELAND, CITY OF MONTREAL
JOHN Hogan LABORER, 25, M, 6 Jul 1874, IRELAND, CITY OF MONTREAL
MARGARET Hogan CHILD, YOUNGSTER 9, F, 6 Jul 1874, IRELAND, CITY OF MONTREAL
MARY Hogan CHILD, YOUNGSTER 11, F, 6 Jul 1874, IRELAND, CITY OF MONTREAL
The ages of Mary and Margaret are wrong, but I find different ages for them on different documents. Also, I’m not sure how any of the above are related except that Mary and Margaret are sisters.

I can’t find any information on anyone in this group returning to Ireland.

I searched www.ellisisland.org and located the ship manifest where Mary journeyed to Troy NY from Ireland in 1907: The information on the manifest is:

August 15, 1907 on the S. S. Oceanic, Mary Hogan, 34, came to New York from Queenstown to visit her sister Margaret Reardon at 428-4th Street, Troy. It's unclear whether Mary is returning after a visit to Ireland, or if she has been in the United States for many years, returning from a visit to Ireland. The confusion is caused by the question on the manifest that asks:

Were you ever before in the United States, and if so, when and where. "Yes" is written. If yes--years or period of years. "16" is written. Manifest also shows that Mary was coming from County Limerick, McDonnell Range Garryowen. There is also a question that asks for the name of nearest relative or friend and it says Father James.

I have an old postcard sent to Mary Hogan, same address as above, c/o James Clohessy from a Katie Crough in Quebec Canada. It’s dated July 3, 1907.

Sorry this is so long. I hope this helps you and if you have any info on your Hogans, please let me know. I live in Troy and can go to the Library and check directories if you have a year when John J. Hogan worked at St. Joseph’s Home for Boys. The directories are filled with information.

My email address is caschrom@gmail.com

Carol

Hello Linda, my name is Richard Parker and I'm from the John line from George and Mary. I found our information on the family. We just had a family reunion on New Brunswick last July 2009 in Dundee, N.B. There were 235 Parkers in attendance of the 11 children of George Parker and Mary Seaward. We have the Parker tree all the way back to 1600's England. George had a brother Robert who came to Canada before George and Mary. He landed in Montreal and we can't find him. Have your heard of him?? I can also be reached @ richard.parker@gov.ab.ca

How long a voyage and what percentage of a farmer's annual pay would tickets for 3 passengers require?

Thank you,

Richard Madigan

Hello Rita,
Thanks for replying to my query. Do you know what happened to your Uncle ? did he go to America ? I believe he may be my father. I was fostered in 1946, when I was 3 months old, but my adopted mother knew of my background and mentioned the Howards. I met my grandparents, Howards, in Kilmallock, and went around the cinema, when I was about 3/4, but never found out what happened to them all.
Regards
Pat
