Hi Stephen,
I don't know the aunt's name but she was on the father's side.
The RC parish of Dunleer has microfilm of births and arriages for the civil parishes of Cappoge,Dunleer and Mosstown for the years 1772-1880 marriages and 1847-1880 for births.
Since I only found one Hernandez, I'll look for Monaghans.

Could you tell me the name of the RC church in Dunleer?
I'll try the website you sent to me.

Louth is a new county for me. My parents came from Cork and Waterford and my husband's were from Laois.
Thanks for the help you've given me.

Hi Kay,

I live in Dunleer which might be what they are getting at? RC has reasonably good records but they are expensive - 4 euro each - search is free though. http://ifhf.brsgenealogy.com
I checked and Joseph is also the only one found.
Monaghan is a common enough name here, though not like Murphy, Lynch, Doyle or Walsh.
So civil and RC records only have 1 Hernandez, yet 5 children were in the family? What was the aunt's name again, and was she on father or mother's side?

Regards,

Stephen

Hi Kay,

I'll answer here, but you might want to start a new thread in case the original poster thinks were are hijacking their query!

I'm no expert on Ardee, I live a few miles nearby, that's all. I don't know any local experts who might help you, but I would guess there is absolutely no way you'll find any workhouse records at this point. However, I had an ancestor who may have been born in the Ardee workhouse (she had a common name, so I could be wrong) and I researched all the church records which listed Workhouse as an address a while ago. I had a look, and Joseph is the only one on my list as well. Sadly, there are several cementries, and records (apart from headstones) are scarce too. I don't have any death records, you could try the civil ones at labs.familysearch.org. I checked from what names you mentioned, and the only one I see was Joseph there too. Doesn't look great I'm afraid. Did they live elsewhere before Ardee? Any reason the children wouldn't have been baptised in Ireland?
PM me if you have any more details.

Regards,

Stephen

Manwell Hernandez m. Bridget Monaghan. They had five children. The only one I found was Joseph b.27Feb 1864 at Ardee, Louth. I was hoping to find a townland but Bridget had her son Joseph in the workhouse.
The parents died and an aunt collected the five children and brought them to the Canary Islands, then to Cuba and then to Tampa, Fl.
Is there anyway I can get more information about the parents and how they died? Would the workhouse have records? How about cemetery records?
I would appreciate any help.
Kay

Thank you for the information, Larry.

Through a bit of research since my initial posting, I was able to determine that my great great grandfather, William "Bill" Lynn, who resided on Drogheda Road made construction nails. He made the nails with this brother, Thomas, who lived where the credit union now stands and Thomas had the forge on his property. The brothers learned their trade from their father and also working with them was a cousin, Thomas Cox.

My Bill died in 1906 and his brother, Thomas, died in 1911. All of the children in these lines immigrated to Maryland and California between the 1880s through 1913. My two aunts were the last to leave Ardee and were staying with their uncle when he died in 1911.

Since my initial posting, I was able to locate some of Thomas' descendants in California. One of the cousins went to Ardee in the 1970's and actually took a picture of Thomas' house which is a nice keepsake since those houses were demolished when they built the credit union.

Thanks again!

Lynn
I refer to my aunt Mary Anne Steen who died in 1986.
The Lynn bros. lived at Church Hill Ardee.Where the Credit Union had their offices until recently.
They actually made nails for the building trade before machine nails were available. They lived next door to the Douglas Family.
Her grandfather and great grand uncle would have bought nails from them.

Although I am not sure we have direct relations, I understand your confusion. My own grandmother, Mary Ann Rice came to this country with the name Minnie Rice, Northern Ireland, yet she also was Omeath, Louth. Louth is in the Republic, as you know. One thing I have found, even with the river bordering the county, there seemed to be a real border town feel, and it seems she was Christened in a parish in Northern Ireland. Short story long, it could be the same; where they lived on the border of the county area, and went elsewhere for marriage or such and just combined the two when filling out papers (something I've found with my wife's Italian family as well).

I wish I could help more, much of my information did come from the recent Irish census that was published, and the papers she had left when she died. Much luck with your search and if I can help, I will do anything I can for you.
Tom

Hi,

We have the following records which might be the right ones.

Ardee is in County Louth (pronounced Loud) but you'll see many different spellings in older records. European dates here dd/mm/yyyy.

Marriage:
08/12/1841 Thomas Rice + Mary Flanegan of Hales St Ardee

Children of this couple:
18-09-1842: Anne
29-08-1844: Pat
17-07-1847: Thomas
24-10-1849: Mary

The mother's maiden name was given as 'Flanagan' in all the baptisms. Hales St was the address in all of them too.

Hope this fits your data and helps you.

Regards,

Stephen

I am trying to find my ancestors in Ireland, but have little to go on. I have Thomas Rice who married Mary? They had 3 children born there, Ann, Thomas and Mary. Mary Rice obituary states Adee, County Lough Ireland as where she was born and married, but adee is not in Lough? They immigrated to america between 1850 and 1853 and lived in Pennsyvania. Any info would be a help. Thank you.

Brian,

Thanks for the reply. I know that my Barney Rafferty died in Louisville, Kentucky in 1899, Patrick in 1911 in Louisville, and Lawrence sometime before 1905 in Arkansas. However, I have never figured out what happened to Thomas. Thomas was born about 1842 in County Monaghan, immigrated with the family, and last appears on the 1860 US Census, age 18, living with the family in Hayfield township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania. After 1860, his trail goes cold. Certainly, he was old enough at that time to return to Ireland.

We definitely have names in common, and given the geography there is a good possibility our Rafferty's are related. I'm not sure if you have any cousins still living who carry the Rafferty surname, but if that is the case then you may wish to consider genetic genealogy. My Rafferty DNA is on record at familytreedna.com. There are only 7 Rafferty's in the database currently, and my DNA has matched none of the other six. At least a DNA match would tell us we are definitively connected and allow us to start researching the same information. Just something to consider. In the meantime, I'm happy to share my information with you. Just contact me directly at the email address below if interested.

Thanks!

Marc
raffertyrx(at)sbcglobal(dot)net

John Johnson/Johnston born Dundalk c.1858

Hi
I've finally found my Great Grandparents in County Fermanagh on the 1911 census and my great grandfather John Johnson/Johnston is listed as coming from Dundalk.

He married a Catherine (Kate) McAteer from County Carlow in c. 1889 when he was around 31 and she was 18. They had 3 children, Mary and John who were born in Dublin and Violet (my grandmother) who was born in County Tyrone.

I don't have much to go on, but has anyone got a John Johnston in their family? The story that has been passed down is that their marriage was a mixed Catholic / Protestant one and that their families didn't approve of it.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Re: Ardee, Co. Louth, Ireland

Thank you Stephen.

The variations of the surnames are as shown in the parish registers. The Bailens and Bailins (as they are shown in the majority of cases in the nineteenth century) were turfcutters from the hamlet of Coole on the Ardee Bog; the Boylans, from census records, appear to have been more affluent, farmers and businessmen.

As regards names, I'll begin with John Baylon (born January 1901 and registered as Bailin). He married Mary Denvir (born June 1908) in 1933. Mary died in 1943, but I cannot trace John's death. The last trace I do have is that he was working in Norwich, England in 1944; it is believed as a painter and decorator.

John's parents were Michael (born 1872) and Jane Hoey (born 1873, died 1951). His grandparents were James Bailin (born circa 1847)/Fanny Mooney (born circa 1851, died 1891) and John Hoey (born circa 1836 and shown on the marriage certificate of Michael & Jane as Owen Hoey)/Bridget McCabe (born 1847). Of these grandparents, only Bridget's baptism has so far been found in the Ardee records. John's siblings were James (b. 1897), Mary (b. 1899), Joseph b. 1903), Elizabeth (b. 1906), Frances (b. 1907, d. 1944), Patrick (b. 1909), Michael (b. 1911). All baptisms for these siblings have been found.

Mary's parents were Thomas Denvir (b. 1880, d. 1915) and Bridget O'Rourke (b. 1880). Her grandparents were Edward Denvir (b. 1847 in Athnalivery)/Catherine Leavy (b. 1859) and John O'Rourke (no details known)/Mary Moran (b. 1849 in Athnalivery). Mary's siblings were Christopher (b. 1901, d. 1971), Edward (b. 1903, d. 1994), John (b. 1904), Thomas (b.1907), Bridget (b. 1910), James (b. 1913 in Rathbranmore, Co. Meath near Ardee, d. 1993). All baptisms for these siblings have been found.

The parents of Edward Denvir were John Denaver (b. 1821) and Cathleen Caragher (b. circa 1821). The father of Catherine Leavy was John Leavy. The parents of Bridget McCabe were Jeremiah McCabe and Mary McGuiggan.

So, as you can see, McCabe, Leavy, Mooney, Moran, Caragher and McGuiggan are also surnames being searched.

Brian

Thank you JFR.

I have in fact spent a lot of time searching the records of the parish of Ardee, but unfortunately had no time to finish. The range of names I have shown are the actual interpretations by those keeping the registers. Not all registers have been released to the National Library in Dublin, in particular marriages, so I need to check with the Ardee parish office.

The council and church authorities had to use guesswork to interpret the spellings. As can be seen from the census of 1901, so many people could neither read nor write. On certificates I hold, many signed with a mark.

Place names too are a problem. In the early nineteenth century, "Shragarriff" is sometimes shown as a place of abode for Denevers (as they are shown), but noone at the Ardee parish office, nor friends in Ardee, knows where it is. "Sraid" is the Irish word for "street" and I am now investigating whether there was a "Sraid Garriff/Garriff Street". "Bonaisne" is another place I cannot find. Any ideas?

Brian

Hi

Am tracing some of my family, and am stuck with Ann and James Murphy, who both came from Dundalk. They were gg-grand parents of mine.

They both came from Dundalk, and both born abt 1824. By 1857 they were living in Liverpool. James was a tailor. They had three children: Catherine (b. 1857), James (1859) and Mary Ann (1862). They show up in the 1871 & 1880 England Censuses. Their daughter Mary Ann married Anthony BRADLEY in 1884 and they lived in Liverpool too.

Thats the extent of my knowledge. If anyone could help that would be just great.

Hello Brian,

I too am interested in your Rafferty family. My Rafferty’s also come from County Monaghan. My 3rd great grandfather was Phillip Rafferty, born about 1815. He and his family immigrated to America, arriving in New York June 4, 1845. They first settled in Crawford County, Pennsylvania, and later moved to Grayson County, Kentucky. My particular branch ended up in Oklahoma. Phillip was married to Rose Hanratty/Henratty, and they had five children, Lawrence, Thomas, Patrick, Bernard (Barney), and Mary Ann. All of the boys were born in Ireland, and Mary Ann was born in America. I believe that my Rafferty’s were also from Aghalile townland based on a loan record from the Shirley Estate that was located by a fellow researcher.

Would you happen to know the names of Brigid's parents or grandparents?

Best regards,

Marc Rafferty

Agnes died in 1939, her husband John in 1936. They had one child - John born in 1933 with whom we are in regular contact. There are plenty of Hoeys in Dundalk but as I am England it's difficult and expensive to research via the internet so have got no further. Any information you have to update my research would be appreciated.
Many thanks,
Tracey

Hi,
I'm seeking information regarding my Welsh ancestor John Edwards and any of his descendants in Ireland.
John was born in Fishguard, Pembrokeshire, Wales in 1796 and lived in Ireland between 1833 and 1851, working as a Coastguard Boatman, mainly in County Louth at coastguard stations in Baldoyle, Portrane, Cooley Point, Dunany Point, Killough, and lastly again Cooley Point where John died at the coastguard cottages in May 1851.
He left a wife and a large family but I have no details of them except for his sons John born c.1821 and Levi born c.1829, both of whom were born and later worked at Fishguard as shoemakers.
I'd very much appreciate any further information about the fate of the family in Ireland.

Hi,
I know from Saunders Newsletter that John was attended by the Rev. M’Cormick, the Protestant curate, when he was dying. His son was Protestant, a Baptist in Wales, so they weren't Catholic it seems.
Although I can't rule it out I think he is unlikely to have married in Ireland as at least 2 of his children were born well prior to his arrival and apparently coastguards weren't allowed to "fraternise" with local people due to their anti-smuggling duties, that's why they were posted away from home. My best guess for his wife's name is Mary Ann or Mary but that's based on grandchildren's names.
Thanks very much for your prompt response but unfortunately the link seems unlikely at this stage.

Thank you both for the information.
I'm not convinced about the Catholic baptisms as there is fairly compelling evidence that John was linked to the local Protestant church. As Welsh non-conformists I think the rituals of the Church in Ireland would have been a big enough leap for them. That said, I have no knowledge of the local situation in Louth and am taking a fairly simplistic view.
Thanks again for your assistance.

Hi Rosie

Yes, I know of the Brady family. My Great Grandma was Ellen Brady. I've been corresponding with Carol Brady recently, and she has given me so much information about the Brady family, as I had got as far as identifying that Ellen Brady was born in Rassan. I believe that Carol mentioned your name when we discussed the family. I can certainly fill in some gaps on Ellen's descendents. Marcus.

Hi,

It's certainly possible, but I discounted it because John was used in 3 baptisms and the James Edwards had no corresponding wife name. However, I think I have other Edwards, but not many, in Louth if you want to check them. She could well be another daughter though.

For instance, in the Cooley area alone between 1835 - 1840, there are Edwards children listed to fathers Pat, John, James and William. As the mothers are also different, they are probably not all the same man with different spellings, though John and James could be.

Not counting the children in Cooley, there were only 20-odd Edwards born between 1764 and 1864 in Louth.

Regards.

No problem, the John Edwards I have wasn't married in Ireland as far as I know (no record in that parish/county Louth anyway) but had 2 kids around that time in Cooley; 1837 (Martha) and 1840 (William). Mother listed as Mary Edwards nee Davis. I have the sponsors somewhere deeper in my records if you think these might be a match. Good luck with the search.

Did a bit of checking at other coastal parishes (in Louth) and Dunany point has the same parents with another son. I've included him below:

Parents: John Edwards + Mary Davis (No marriage Found in Louth)

Children:
11 March 1837: Martha Edwards (Templetown, Cooley)
Sponsors: David McCaw and Judith Davis

25 September 1840: William Edwards (Templetown, Cooley)	Sponsors: John Morgan and Judith Davis

29 January 1843: Jas Edwards (Dunany, Togher)
Sponsors: John O'Neill and Eliza Clinton

Hi, I have some Edwards details for Templetown, which is on the coast near Cooley. Does that ring any bells? Do you have a religion or wife's name(s) by any chance? I have a (Catholic) John Edwards married to a Mary Davis here. They didn't turn out to be the line I was looking for but if they fit you can have the info I have.
Hi,

Sorry for not getting back sooner. No graves found, but I have this in my Nulty notes:

There is a Patrick Quinn who married a Rose Nulty in Ardee (very local to Dunleer) on 08 June 1862?

They had 9 children, so one of these may be new to you. Children were:

Mary (Born in Oberstown) in 17-12-1862.
Pat (Born in Green) in 31-03-1864.

Rest born in Richardstown:

Ellen Jane in 13-06-1866.
Rose in 07-02-1868.
Bridget in 18-11-1869.
Anna Elizabeth in 21-03-1871.
Catherine in 15-09-1872.
Margt in 28-02-1875.
Michael in 23-04-1876.

None of the sponsors were 'Nulty' or 'Quinn' except Rose (Margaret Quinn) and Michael (Patt Nulty) so if you assume these may be brother and sister of the parents then you may be able to find grandparents. Of course, they could just as easy be cousins or friends with similar names and so on.

There are 3 Rose Nulty's in the area around this time.
2 born in 1844 a month apart in the same village of Ardee (seriously) and 1 down the road in Tallanstown in 1842. Only one of these 3 had a brother named Patt. So I'm stretching now, but Rose Nulty was the 4th child of 6 of John Nulty and Catherine Byrne (Patt was 6th child). That puts Rose Nulty's DOB as 14 March 1844 and they lived in Silver Hill. I can supply other siblings if you are interested.

Feel free to reply or message me directly if you have any other info that can help narrow it down.

Regards,

Stephen

AND HERE IS ANOTHER CHILD

I have reviewed your posts regarding this family and I think there was another child -MARY.

MARY EDWARDS 1838

Mary Edwards from Templetown was baptised at Cooley RC church on 14 August 1838. The parents were James Edwards and Mrs Edwards.

This child Mary fits in between Martha 1835 and William in 1840 so she is likely to be a member of this family. Both Martha and William were Baptised in the Catholic church in Cooley.

JOHN OR JAMES EDWARDS

One small glitch though - the father of Martha and William was "JOHN" Edwards and the father of Mary was "James" as was the father of the third child.

It was not uncommon for names to vary but it would seem that there were at least 4 children born in County Louth but you will have to keep digging for the rest.

I have considerable experience researching in this area of County Louth and the surname Edwards is extremely rare - it is certainly not a native Irish name. This reinforces my view that Mary (1838) is a child of the family.

I hope this helps.

Michael Hughes
Buckinghamshire
England

Further to your request for info on a number of families from the Ardee area of Co Louth.

I have a background from the Ardee area and I can confirm that the local spellings for the four listed families are Baylan, Denver, Hoey and O'Rourke.

It is likely that you have done so already, but if not I suggest that you review the Irish Census for 1911, which has recently become available online

JFR
