The main problem which Researchers have is due to the Townlands being translated into English. The purpose of this posting is to alert Researchers to the list of equivalent Townland names (which I have) in English which correspond to the older Irish language version. Irish language speakers can recognise a townland by its name since each name is really a description (in Irish) of that Townland. My father had a rule - Never buy a farm entitled Drum...... it will be hilly, whereas one entitled Clon..... will be flat land

You are most probably looking at Tedavnet/Tydavnet for those Wrights, my Wrights attended there too.

John Wright of Clontoe was the Chief Constable there in 1850's and attended Tedavnet Church.

John Charles Wright owned about 250 acres of land in Clontoe.

Good luck with the Wrights, there's no shortage of them!

You would appear to have a lot of information at your fingertips so I am hoping that you can help me with the birthplace of my husband's grandfather. There are an awful lot of 'Thomas Wright's in the family but the one in question was born on 23 April 1887 in "Clintoe Monaghan". I have a photo of a certified copy of the original birth certificate dated 27 July 1946.
Birthplace and Dwelling-place of Father are both listed as "Clintoe Monaghan" whereas "Residence of informant" is given as "Clinto Monaghan".
I can find no mention anywhere of a Clinto/e so it's over to you.
Yours with fingers crossed,
Heather

Her parents were Catherine Martin born in Donaghmoyne and Patrick Cassidy born in Mucker.

James Markey died in NYC on Sept 17, 1943 and is buried in Calvary Cemetery in Queens, NY

Thanks for your reply. I had considered Gunn, but it didn't look the same as the two "n"s in Connolly and it did look like "m"s in other words. But Gume doesn't make any sense, so I agree with you that Gunn is a good possibility.

The other name that is from Ireland and is associated with the Patrick McDonald + Bridget McCann family is TENNEY. In the 1871 Shotts Iron Works, Calderhead District, Lanark Scotland census the son John McDonald whose mother Bridget McCann McDonald died shortly after his birth in 1867, is listed as a member of the household of Catherine Tenney 61 and Jane Tenney 23. John is listed as the grand-nephew of head of household Catherine Tenney.

This household is at the same address as Patrick McDonald and his older children Mary 17, Thomas 9, Patrick 6 and Mary Connelly 60. So I'm not sure why they are listed as a separate family.

Catherine Tenney would be an aunt of either Patrick McDonald or of Bridget McCann McDonald, but don't know of which one at this point.

I'm hoping that this group of names will lead me to the parish or townland that they are from, assuming they all came from the same place.

Thanks again.

Barbara McDonald

My Connellys from County Monaghan (possibly).

Patrick McDonald and Bridget McCann married 22 May 1854 or 56 in Monaghan Ireland according to the birth record of their son John in Shotts Iron Works, Calderhead District, Lanark, Scotland in 1867.

Patricks parents were Thomas McDonald and Jane Connelly. Jane's sister Mary Connolly died in Shotts in 1880 at the age of 60. Her parents were listed as Patrick Connolly and Ellen ? Looks like Gume???

Another interesting connection is that I have had my son's Y-DNA tested (descendant of the above Patrick McDonald) and the closest match to him are Biggins and Beaghens!

So, I'm very curious as to what the connections might be.

Barbara McDonald

One newly found generation to add. From the death record of Mary Connolly, sister of Jane Connolly McDonald, mother of Patrick McDonald and husband of Thomas McDonald from above post:

MARY CONNOLLY, single, age 61 yrs, died March 9, 1880 Shotts Iron Works, District of Calderhead, County of Lanark, Scotland of emphysema and pneumonia. Parents PATRICK CONNOLLY, blacksmith deceased and ELLEN CONNOLLY, maiden surname (looks like) GUME. Informant PATRICK MCDONALD, nephew.

I'm assuming Mary as well as her parents were born in Ireland, as were her nephew Patrick McDonald and his wife Bridget McCann. And likely Monaghan or neighboring county as Patrick McDonald and Bridget McCann were married in County Monaghan.

Any guesses as to what the apparent name GUME could be? The first letter looks close to a G, but not exactly like other "G"s in the record. The second letter I'm pretty sure is "u". Also the third letter looks like "m" and the ending "e" looks like other "e"s in the record. But have only found a few Gumes anywhere in ancestry records.

I've attached the record so you can look for yourself. I would welcome any thoughts.

Thanks,

Barbara McDonald

Patrick McGaughey married Agnes (or Rose) Vallaly and emigrated from County Monaghan to P.E.I. Canada with children Michael, James, John and Annie in about the 1850s. He apparently left another 3 children in Ireland. Patrick McNally born about 1817 emigrated from the same place also to P.E.I. probably 20 years earlier. I descend from Michael McGaughey and am in contact with McNally cousins who descend from Michael's sister Annie McGaughey.

Hi, My great grandfather, James McShane born June 1875, emigrated to the US and married Kate Fitzsimons of Killinkere in 1898. They had a son, James McShane (born 1899), who returned to Ireland with his widowed mother in 1906. Kate McShane nee Fitzsimons then married John Gillick of Killinkere in 1907 abt. I'm trying to establish if the James McShane born in Dromore on 25th June 1875, whose father was Terence McShane of Cornabrandy and mother was Catherine Boylan of Dromore, is the guy who emigrated to the states circa 1893. This would complete the circle as I have no definitive link back to Ireland other than his date of birth, no townland but it looks like there is a relationship between the McShanes of Cornabrandy and the folks in Killinkere. Hope this is it. Regards
Michael McShane, Dublin.
