Hello Kathryn,

I’m not a descendant of the Nolans but found records pertaining to them from the Irish Family History Foundation (IFHF) website link for County Roscommon. (Unfortunately, I didn’t uncover information about William Nolan in a ship’s passenger list to Australia from Ireland or England.)

First, I located both the church and civil marriage indexes at the IFHF for John and Catherine Nolan. The church marriage index shows that John Nolan and Catherine Nolan were married in the Elphin Catholic Church in 1875. The civil marriage record on the other hand was recorded by the government in the Elphin Civil Parish (CP).

Catholic Church marriages I’ve found do not always record the names of the fathers of the groom and bride, but in this instance they do. IFHF marriage records do not automatically give the names of the fathers. You either have to know who they were, or find out who they were through additional research, or take a guess as to who they were. The other option would be to order a transcription of the marriage from the IFHF to find out who they were.

For John, the IFHF search engine accepted William as his father’s first name. For his mother the search engine only accepted the initials NR for her first and last names. The NR stands for “Not Recorded.”

The Elphin Catholic Church marriage index with John Nolan as he primary partner, is below:

1 match for the search criteria: Nolan (plus variants) John 1875 Parish: ELPHIN (RC)

Mother's Surname: NK
Mother's First Name: NK

I also took several guesses as to the first name of Catherine’s father. The IFHF search engine accepted James. The index below reflects Catherine Nolan as the primary partner in the marriage:

1 match for the search criteria: Nolan (plus variants) Catherine 1875 Parish: ELPHIN (RC)

Record Type: Marriage Records for Co. Roscommon

The Elphin Civil Parish marriage indexes also accepted William as John’s father and James as Catherine’s father. These indexes follow:

The IFHF homepage can be found at: http://www.rootsireland.ie/

Before accessing indexes at the IFHF you’ll first have to register. Registration is free. You’ll also be able to access the church and civil marriage indexes that I did for free, but you will be charged to obtain the transcriptions for the two marriage records. You’ll have to purchase a sufficient amount of credits with a credit card to obtain the transcriptions. The IFHF website will have more information about purchasing credits for baptism, as well as birth, marriage, and death or burial transcriptions. The marriage transcriptions will be sent to your computer once payment is made, which means you won’t have to wait for them to arrive by mail.

I recommend ordering both the church as well as civil marriage transcriptions for John and Catherine, as each may contain information that the other doesn’t have. The church marriage will likely include the exact date of the marriage, and the names of the witnesses, along with the names of the fathers of the groom and bride. The Civil Parish transcription will likely provide you with the addresses where John and Catherine were living at the time they married, as well as John’s occupation.

To view sample marriage as well as birth, baptism, and death transcriptions, go to the IFHF link at:

Next I found the civil birth and or church baptism indexes for six of John and Catherine’s children at the IFHF. These children are: Margaret (1876); Mary Ann (1877); Eleanor (1878); Brigid (1880); William (1881); and John (1882).

All six of the children were baptized in the Elphin Catholic Church. There are Civil birth indexes for three of the children, including Eleanor, William, and John. The births were recorded in the Ballinameen, Roscommon Civil Parish, noted as (CP) in each of the three indexes.

One advisory note: To access the baptism index for Brigid, make sure to spell her name as Brigid rather than Bridget or Bridgit, or any other variant, or the search engine will reject the entry.

The indexes follow:

To view a modern Google Map of Elphin, go to: http://tinyurl.com/ceegk4d

Once at the map you’ll see the letter A pointing to the center of town. To the left of the letter A is Main Street, which runs into Chapel Street. Follow Chapel Street around the curve and you’ll come to St. Patrick’s Church. This is a Catholic Church and likely the church were John and Catherine were married, and also where their children were baptized.

Next, left-click on the Letter A to generate a “Street view” thumbnail photo of Elphin. Click on the photo and you’ll be able to navigate your way through the town with your mouse and pointer. You’ll also be able to drive to St. Patrick’s Church. If you navigate your way around Main Street, Chapel Street, and castle Street, you’ll see what a nice little town Elphin is.

John and Catherine may have lived in Elphin, but may also have lived in one of the surrounding towns. The civil birth indexes for the three children will tell you where the family were living when they were born. These children were probably born in the residence listed on their respective birth certificates.
