Roger McHugh was born at Ballymote, Sligo Co., Ireland in 1783. He fought with the Connaught Rangers, 27th Enniskillen in the Napoleonic Wars and he fought as a sargeant-major under the Duke of Wellington at the Battle of Waterloo in the Peninsular Wars. He was granted land in Victoria Co., Ontario in July 1832 after leaving Ireland for Canada in 1831. Along with Roger were his wife, Mary Jackson born 1787 and his children, Patrick McHugh born 1818 who married Ann Walker of Ireland in Canada in 1842, John McHugh born 1822, Bridget McHugh born 1826 married Francis Brady of Ireland in Canada in 1847. There were other children of Roger McHugh for in the book written called IRISH MEN IN CANADA by NICHOLAS FLOOD DAVIN, it states that Roger McHugh had four sons besides Patrick. I believe that Roger McHugh may also have had a relative named Cornelius John McHugh born 1830 who married Catherine O'Callaghan and settled at Belleville, Ontario. Have much information on Roger's descendants and am missing much as well. Kathleen Donohue Logan
