Your ref to Gurteen makes me think that we may not be tracing the same family as it has not cropped up in any of my searches, so "your" Michael and "my" Andrew may not be brothers!their address was in Doonmoran Sligo

4/7/67 and Andrew Layden 7/5/1874, both at Skreen and Dromard RC Sligo,parents being Michael Layden and Mary Hopkins.There were four other children, John,Pat,James and?
It appears that Michael arrived in Chester and married Mary Griffiths while Andrew holed up in Oldham and married Frances Burns.I have located most of both of their descendants(both with large families)
