Hi Lori,

I am descended from Cavanaughs in Scranton, and I've often heard that they were from Sligo (or Mayo). The earliest ancestor that I have is Timothy Cavanaugh, born about 1818 in Ireland, the last address I have for him is Chestnut St, Scranton in 1880.

He had the following children:
Thomas b. abt 1848
Matthew b. abt 1851
John b. 1855 supposedly in VA or WVA, died 1887 He was a miner and lived on Chestnut St. Scranton
Dominic b. abt 1859
Timothy b 1870

John Cavanaugh (b 1855) married Catherine Curley in 1873, children:
- Mary b.1874
James F. b. 1875, married Cecelia O'Boyle
Timothy J. 1878-1942 married Margaret, he was a soldier, buried in Golden Gate Park
John Leo 1879-1946 married Catherine Arnold in 1900
Margaret 1882-1932, married Louis Hoffman
Matthew b. 1883
Joseph b. 1886

John Leo Cavanaugh and Catherine Arnold children
Margaret M, married John Hudak
William L, married Margaret Burkhouse
Joseph
Gertrude Mary
John Francis , married Frances Riebel
Catherine A., married Charles Burkhouse
Ethel
Leo
Helen, married Joseph Collin
Paul R

All born in Scranton. I can add much more detail if you are interested.

Do any of these Cavanaughs ring a bell?
