Classification: Query
The only George Mulholland in the 1841 UK census which lists persons born in Ireland, Living
Portland St. Parish Manchester, Manchester. Age 50, can't read his employment, perhaps a brickmaker?
His wife Catherine age 30, may have been born Ireland but this column is so faint hard to read
Son Thomas is 5 mo. old.

I don't have other UK Census but the answer must be there. Definitely you are right when the Army posted you somewhere you went family and all. There is a website that the British Army have given their records too, it is fee based. The Link is on the National Archives, Kew, London. If you can't locate it you can contact me by email: codeannette@yahoo.ca

People left Ireland for a better life, if left in the 1840's this was during the famine as well, jobs were
few and England was becoming very commercialized and there were manufacturing jobs, mining jobs etc.

There are 5 George Mulholland's in the 1871 census that also gives those born in Ireland, all too young, all but 1 in the Navy (4) or the Soldier (1) There is no Allen Mulholland's listed. All those listed were from Portaferry, Co. Down.

I wonder if RH is RN as in Royal Navy, this can be so easily be misread and then typed out wrongly.

Parish records for County Sligo are on line with a history foundation, not for profit but fee paying.
www.rootsireland.ie you can search with father's name, Allen and birth year 1838.
Always depends though on survival of records.

www.familysearch.org under England records quite a few Allen Mulholland's and some census records. One even born in Horfield Barracks, Bristol.

There are no George Mulholland's in the Griffith Valuation 1857 for Sligo but there are 4 others.
