Hi
I decided to drop the O' in O'Connell and searched for both a Thomas and Denis Connell and I got more results
1) Denis Connell baptised in the parish of Ballisodare/Kilvarvet (Dioceses of Achonry) in 1850. These records are available on Microfilm in Sligo Library.
The record is also available on the following site
http://sligo.brsgenealogy.com/
2)I also found on the above site a marriage record for a Thomas Connell in 1833 in the Parish of Emlafad/Kilmorgan(Achonry) available on microfilm in Sligo Library

3) Another site to try is this
http://www.irishgenealogy.ie/
I found a marriage details for Thomas Connell/Ellen Bowles 1846
4)Griffith Valuation has some positive results for Thomas and Denis Connell. Both are found in the Civil Parish of:Achonry: Barony of LEYNY :Union of TOBERCURRY

Sligo Library has Church records for all dioceses with the Exception of Elphin. These are available only in the Sligo Heritage Centre.
You have lots of possibilities to explore now
Rosaleen

Anyone know who did the 1911 CENSUS (South Sligo, Aclare & Tubber) collection?

Hey All Sligo researchers and "people"!

I am looking into the 1911 Ireland Census,
which is online free at:

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/

and has all of Co. Sligo Census documents, including
images (PDF) of the actual forms used to collect the Census information.

I am wondering if anyone knows who did the actual Census collection in the South Co. Sligo area (in
particular Aclare and close townlands (Cladagh,
Knockbrack, Stonepark} or if a list of enumerators (I presume it was the RIC) exists?

In my ancestors case they were counted by "Comm. Ins. Flannery."

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Murph_

Hi
Re your search for O'Connell.I did a search of the 1901 census and found a Thomas O'Connell (farmer) in the Townland of Magheranore : Parish of Achonry : Barony of Leyny : Co.Sligo
One of the sons is named Denis aged 9 years . This is a long shot but as some names are carried on in families this may be worth investigating. I estimate that this Thomas was married circa 1883. The marriage details of Thomas may help. This Thomas could be a brother to the Denis you are researching ?
A search of the 1911 census for the same area shows the family living in the same area and living with them is Anne Healy: sister- in - Law.
A search of Griffith Valuation for Magheranore Parish of Achonry Barony of Leyny shows 2 Healy holdings, But no O'Connell. A search of both Griffith and Tithe have no Thomas O'Connell
Magheranore is in South Co. Sligo . The townland is on the R294 Tubbercurry (Tobercurry to Ballymote/Gurteen Road

http://www.sligococo.ie/library/maps/1837/index/parishTownla...
You will also find this place on Google maps.
Because Magheranore is so close to the Mayo border it may be that Thomas came into this area from another county
Best of Luck
Rosaleen
I am reseaching the family RALPH from County Sligo.
My late husband was a descendant of John Ormsby RALPH:
My Husband - James Wooloughan, son of Lawrence Wooloughan and Gwen Marie RALPH.
His Mother: Gwen Marie RALPH, daughter of Allan Ormsby RALPH and Mary Amelia Mitchell.
Paternal Grandparents: Allan Ormsby RALPH, youngest son of Allan Ormsby RALPH and Agnes Raymond, nee Farmer.
Great-Grandparents: John Ormsby RALPH and Mary Stuart/Stewart.
I believe that this John Ormsby RALPH was deceased by the time Allan Ormsby RALPH graduated from Trinity College Dublin in c1850. The marriage certificate of Allan Ormsby RALPH and Agnes Raymond nee Farmer states that his father was a shopkeeper - this was in 1865 at Melbourne Australia. I would very much like to know what records are available for this family in Ireland, I know that Alan Ormsby RALPH's brother Samuel Ormsby RALPH came out to Australia before 1857.
Hoping to hear from you
Allannah Wooloughan of Rye, Victoria.
It was some time ago that I posted this and I now believe that it was only Robert, (Margarets son to George Stallard), that lived in Newcastle with his wife and two children Robert and Mary. After his wife died probably sometime between 1866 and 1871, he moved to Glasgow with his two kids to live with his mother, presumably so she could look after the kids while he worked. Robert was my grandmothers grandfather and sometime between 1871 and my grandmothers birth in 1900 the name started to appear as Stellard

I saw your post and wondered if there might be a connection. I have two different (so far we cannot connect them) different Morrison families from Ballymote, Gurteen area. One family is from Woodhill. John Morrsion b. abt 1822 and Elizabeth Irwin his wife. Woodhill is the name of the house. John's fathers name was Roger. The other side goes back further in date but has far less info. Hugh Morrison b. 1802 in Kilturia and came to America in 1846 with his wife Agnes McElroy and her sister Jane who married
Robert Armstrong in Ontario Canada. (Robert was from Sligo Co as well). If any of this fits please let me know. Thank you Robbin

I cannot find his family. One of his daughters passed on the story that he grew up in Sligo. So if anyone knows anything about this family, please post.

It is so exciting to find someone else who is related to the Stallard family.

From my research, Robert was born in Sligo, Ireland in 1833. He married Margaret Lafferty in Glasgow on 21 October 1857.

In 1861 they were living at 4 Hartfield Street, Lanarkshire. Robert's occupation is listed as a "Lab Chemical Worker".

They must have moved to Newcastle shortly after this as their two children, Robert and Mary, were born there in 1864 and 1866 respectively. Margaret died between July and September 1866 in South Shields at the age of 30 - around the time of her daughter's birth.

As you know, Robert then moved back up to Turner Street in Glasgow to live with his mum.

On 5 December 1873, Robert remarried 35 year old Mary Murray at 4 Cobden Street, Glasgow. His profession is listed as a furnace man and he was 40. Before getting married, Mary Murray was living in Garngad Road. She was an unmarried mother of three children – John, Alexander and Jane - and worked as a domestic servant.

Tragically, Mary (Robert’s daughter from his first marriage) died on 20th February 1876 at 4 Cobden Street of pneumonia. She was only 9 years old.

Less than a month later on 14 March 1876, Robert and Mary’s only child, George, was born.

Robert died on 26th February 1880 at 4 Cobden Street of “inflammation of lungs (3 months) and congestion of lungs (6 days)”. His age is listed as being 39 but I think he was nearer 47.

Robert’s two natural sons were Robert and George and I have found out:

Robert

He never married and died on 21 March 1894 aged 39 in Glasgow. His occupation is listed as a labourer (navy pensioner). The cause of his death was “hypertrophy of the heart, bronchitis”. The informant was his half brother, Alexander.

George

He married Catherine Watt in 1897 and had eight children – Mary, George, Catherine, Jeanie, Robert, Samuel, Annie and Francis.

Their oldest child, Mary, suffered from congenital heart disease and went to a special school - she never married and died in 1946 (age 49) of “congenital heart disease and pulmonary TB”. She was living with her younger brother, George, at the time at 11 Royston Road, Glasgow.

In August 1912, George applied for poor relief. At that time he was working at Hilfords Spring Works where his average weekly wage was £1.14/4. According to the records he was “discharged” from his job in September 1912 because of illness.

George died on 23 October 1912, aged 36, in the Royal Infirmary, Glasgow of pyaemia (2 months, 7 days).

His occupation is listed as a hammerman and his usual residence was 5 Thomas Street, Glasgow. His death was registered by his widow, Catherine, who had moved to 142 Garngad Road. She got £9.8/- from the City Friendly Society on his death.

Pyaemia is an infection of the blood usually through a wound, often resulting in the formation of multiple abscesses – yuk!

How does your Grandmother tie into all this?

The name Stallard has changed its spelling loads of times. I've found Stellard, Stirrat, Stallart, Stalyard - to name a few!!!

Have you managed to get any further back? I cannot get any information on George Stallard (Margaret Woodland's husband).

I have even more information on Robert if you would like it - including some certificates.

I believe that they were from the Riverstown, Sligo area - possibly a place named Cuiltylough. I an interested in the location of Fannybrook Farm in Sligo. Can you let me know where it is?
Just came across your post - I have a Robert G Morrison born in 1823 according to my notes, who had a Jemima sometime in the 1880 - through a second marriage - must have been to a younger wife as I see that he would be around 60 yrs old....could be a connect though? My branch was from the Mt Forest area of Arthur Township wellington Co - came via Ireland in 1833 - Robert and Ann Jane Irwin - gave birth to Richard (he had a twin - Robert C.)- married Sarah McCosh - the 2 of them settled in western Michigan in the 1860's and we are now raising the 5th generation here on the farm they started in 1865. Let me know if any thing sounds familiar.

I am by no means a Morrison expert. What I do know is Rebecca Jemima Morrison my g. g. grandmother was b. 1882. Here is what was inscribed in this little bible:

Page 1
“This book is presented to Robert Morrison on his way to America by his affectionate cosin [sic] Robert Morrison of Ballymote 16th May 1843 in order that you may read it often for yourself and others and see the beauty of holy script? And get to heaven.”

Page 2
“ Within this artful volume lies the mystery of mysteries. Happi [sic] ist they of human race to welcome their God has given grace. To read, to fear, to hope, to pray. To lift the latch to force the way and better had they never been born than lead to doubt or lead to scorn. Friend after friend departs. Who hath not lost a friend. There is no union here of hearts that finds not here an end. Where this frail world our final rest. Living or dying none were blessed. There is a world above where parting is unknown a long eternity of love formed for the good alone oh may I see you there.
Robert
(The above verse is from a poem written by Robert Montgomery in 1837.)

Mathew born April 3, 1866
Robert born April 12, 1868
Rebecca Jemima born 28th August 1882
Fredrick Henry born Sept 16th 1884
Ida May born 23 May 1886

I do not know who the Mathew b. 1866 or the Robert b. 1868 were but Rebecca – Fredrick and Ida were brother and sister. Perhaps the others were from wife # 1? His first wife was a Mary Morrison:

“21 February, 1850, by license, Robert MORRISON, of the township of Toronto, bachelor, and Mary MORRISON, of the same place, spinster.
Source: Marriages at St. James, Anglican, Toronto, 1847-1851. From Landmarks of Toronto, volume 3, p.395 ff, by John Ross Robertson, submitted by Marcie Lawrence, Marriages Performed by Rev. H.J. GRASETT, Rector of St. James, 1850.
http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~maryc/old6.htm

Mary Morrison, dau of Wm Born: Jul 17, 1835 Canada Copy notes from Riverstown Cemetery R-26 Married: Feb 21, 1850 Tullamore, Ontario Died: May 11, 1870 Arthur Twp., Wellington Co., Ontario [reg]

Perhaps they were cousins?

Yes - Robert Y. Morrison b. 1823 was married twice. Here is the second marriage notice:

Marriage Registration 1881 - MORRISON, Robert Y., 45 years, res. Arthur b. Ireland, Widower s/o Matthew and Mary MORRISON m. Mary RATHWELL , 32 years, res. Arthur, b. Montague, d/o Samuel and Rebecca RATHWELL at Kenilworth
[Public Archives of ON 01224581]

Mathew Morrison was the son of Hugh Morrison b. 1770. Here is the data:

Hugh William Morrison born March 9, 1770 in Sligo county
Wife: Anne Morrison (Lindsay) born in 1776 of Sligo Ireland.

Children:
1.	William
2.	Robert
3.	Jane
4.	Hugh James
5.	Matthew

I got this information from Edith Rodier a Morrison descendant. Even she has trouble keeping them all straight.
I believe your Robert G. Morrison is an old typo. Here’s why:

Endnote: --- It has been determined from marriage & death registration information that middle initial "G" is a misinterpretation of the letter "Y" hence heading should actually be ROBERT Y. MORRISON

This is from a record I got from Glenn Christie. Here is section from an email I got from him:

“In 1878 and 1879, George, Eliza [George A. Christie (1850-1918) and Elizabeth (Eliza) Jane Morrison (1853-1916)], their 3 eldest children, George's widowed mother Isabelle (1815-1899), Eliza's widowed father Hugh Morrison (1822/25-1898), and several of George's brothers (w/families) all emigrated from the Arthur area to the Sault Ste. Marie area, where my g.grandfather Oliver was born.”
gkc_inc@yahoo.com

Here is another glimpse at the Morrison’s of Sligo coming to Canada:

“Looking for relatives in the Morrison lines that came from Sligo Ireland in 1829-1833 timeframe and settled in the Peel Region of Ontario - Toronto Gore - Tullamore. Farmers. Hugh William morrison born 1770 in Sligo Ireland, married Anne Lindsay. William Morrison born 1778 in Sligo Ireland married Mary. I am in the Robert Morrison (1812-1887) and Catherine Brinkman (1812-1901) line. They had 11 children: William James Morrison (1854-1934) married Alice Lougheed (1864-1905), Elizabeth Morrison (1837-1920), Mary Ann, Jane (1840-1934) married to John Morrison, John Morrison and Ellen Craig, Catherine, Margaret married Arthur Shaw, Robert, Ellen married George Bailey, Rebecca, Matthew. I am in the William and Alice Lougheed line, under their son Cecil Elwyn Morrison who married Victoria Popham”

karen-is@rogers.com

You can contact me directly at:

rory.griffith@sasktel.net
Hi Marian
My ggfather and other Gannons were from Carrowneden. There are Gannons living there to this day. Other branches of the family lived in Lavagh and it was Bridget Gannon of Lavagh (father named John) to whom my ggfather Patrick Gannon of Carrowneden (father named John) was married in 1864 at the RC Chapel of Mullinabreena at Lavagh. Their first child Christopher was born Christmas Day 1865, the birth registered at Coolaney. By 1866 and the birth of their second child the family had moved to Ryhope Durham in England, though how and why I don't know.
If this chimes with any of your information on the Gannons of Co Sligo I'd be pleased to hear from you.
Best Wishes
Martin Gannon

I have recently discovered a family link to Innischrone, and understand that there are some variations to the name of the this town in Sligo.

I wonder if anyone could shed any light on this family that appears in the English 1881 and 1891 census in Keighley, West Yorkshire. The family were all born in Ireland:

William Kennedy b1823
Sarah Kennedy (wife) b1835

Children are:

Ann (b1855), Bessie (1857), William (1861), Michael (1865, stayed in England), John (1867), Agnes (1870, stayed in England), Kate (1872), Catherine (1873, stayed in England), Johanna (1876).

William (snr) is described as a Mason's Labourer in 1881.

Any hints, tips or advice regarding researching this family further would be appreciated.

Steve

Hi, just glad to help. I'm in England and I've been researching my family from round there for a couple of years.

I think Castletown is around the old O'Dowd castle in Cottlestown townland. You could have a look at the Griffith's Valuation on the Ask About Ireland website then do searches by family name or placename. Before Griffiths there was the Tithe Applotment Register for Castleconnor.

Good luck and thanks for the virtual Guinness! I used to love that stuff, especially over yonder, but I'm tt now.

Hi - I'm looking for any information about my husbands great aunt and her siblings, etc.  We don't know much, but here's what I have so far;
There were 9 Devaney children total. The only names I have are Hugh (who I think was the oldest), Mary Ellen (b. 1895?), Beatrice (also known as Bridget or Dede b. 1900?), Owen, Robert and Patrick. Apparently they all grew up in a Sligo orphanage (no one really knows why) that burned down years ago and all records were lost. Dede didn't even know her exact birth date. They all came over to the US one at a time. In Dede's citizenship papers, it states that the nearest relative in Sligo is a Mr. J. Cummins.
Can anyone help?
Thanks so much.

i do have a death certificate for someone on anothere side of my family that says he was born in county sligo. however he was born in county fermanagh so i suspect that he may have sailed from couny sligo and used that as his birthplace as well.most of the rutledges were from county fermanagh and originated in the border areas of scotland and england .they were border reivers. i would try the fermanagh connection around tempo, enniskillen etc.i do know that some rutledges' married coulters and that some were small land lease holders on crom estate. i have been there several times.

Hi
You mentioned Kinlough.Did you know that there is a cemetary which was originally catholic, but, it has the ruins of the original church still there. The best bit is:
the church is a McGowan church therefore numerous headstones are on the inner walls and the floor. They are all McGowan! I went there in June whilst researching my PYE ancestors, but also surprisingly discovered my McGowan ancestors in that churchyard as well! That was a wonderful day!
Good Luck
Pauline Newman
