Wondering if there could be a link between your Joseph, b. 1779 and my GGG grandfather, Samuel Churchill, born Tipperary 1785 or 6. In his military attestion in Feb 1812, he said he was born in Thurles (didn't say whether town or parish --but either way, it's not too far from Fenar), a collarmaker by trade and was 26 years old. He joined 3rd Company, 3rd Battalion of Royal Sappers and Miners and came to Canada in June 1813. Wife was Jane (believed to be Bowles, also Tipperary). They had at least 6 children: William (b. Kingston, Upper Canada 1816), my GG grandfather John (b. Jan 1819 in Kingston); Elizabeth, Joseph, Thomas and Jane.
Have also come across info on another Churchill family who hailed from Littleton/Two Mile Borris area -- again, close to Thurles. William, b. 1801 in Townland of Littleton, m. Letitia Ward abt 1830. The family migrated to Canada abt 1833-4 and settled in Covey Hill, Huntington (near Montreal), Lower Canada. Children were Thomas (b. Ireland), Martha, Elizabeth, William, Letitia, James and Samuel (the latter four born in Quebec).
Many of the given names are common between these three branches of Tipperary Churchills. Has anyone made any strides in sorting out early Churchills? If so, would love to hear -- am also willing to share what I have about my branch.
