I don't know how the John Lacey became known as "Honest John." I found this reference in the Chicago Irish nationalist newspaper THE CITIZEN in an article published at the time of Archbishop Quigley's elevation to the Episcopal See. It talks about him visiting his Lacey relatives in Ireland in 1879 during his return to the states after his studies in Europe. If I recall correctly I think it mentioned also a Lacey uncle of his that was either a priest or prelate in Tipperary at the time.
