The only Info I have is John Married Georgianna Gamble Dec 12,1861 at Aughentine Presbyterian Church, Parish Clogher, county of Tyrone. They then moved to Seaforth, Ontario, Canada. John & Georgianna had 4 children, Mary Jane, Harper Gamble, Andrew William Thompson, and John James. Georgianna and John James died soon after he was born. He was born July 28, 1870 and died Aug 14, 1970, Georgianna died Aug 11,1970. I am also looking for Georgianna Gambles family. The only info I have on her is that her fathers name was John and that she had sister Rebecca,a brother Edward and we think another sister named Jane. Any info would help. Tahnk you Carol

Michelle, the 1901 census household shows Hugh Clark, Roman Catholic, in your townland, aged 83 years, can read and born in Tyrone. His wife Rose is there aged 74 years. She can read and write and Hugh can read. Rose was born in Tyrone also. A few houses further on (according to the librarian) is Patrick Hagan, RC, 64 yrs a farmer and widower born in Tyrone who cannot read. His daughters Bridget abnd Mary are there. Bridget is 26 years and Mary is 20 yrs and both born in Tyrone and both can read and write. Also there are James and Anne Clark grandchildren of Patrick. Both can read and write, both scholars and both born in America. James is 10 yrs and Anne is 9 years.
Hope this helps. A bit more searching to do I would say. If you want to give your e mail address I will try and e mail the actual census printout if you want. Good luck.
Michael Joseph Carroll or McCarroll

On another website, “Carrolls and McCarrolls – where to start” was posted and one of the listers read a comment about my grand parents’ marriage and he most likely came up with something that we have been searching to fill some gaps.

My grandfather was Michael Joseph McCarroll, and he was born in Corkhill in 1879. He left Ireland around 1899 for San Francisco to join his brothers Thomas and Patrick; and,he became a “Carroll” in America.

My grandmother was Agnes Bridget Gaffigan. She was born in San Francisco, California in 1889. Her parents were John Gaffigan and Maggie Crennan. Somehow Aggie and Mickey met in San Francisco. A lot of the records we would normally rely upon burned in the Great Earthquake and Fire of 1906, more devastating than Dublin’s Four Courts disaster.

The next thing we “knew” was that they got married at St. Patrick's in Dundalk, County Louth in July 1912 (and NO! it was not a shotgun marriage as my father was their oldest child and he came in 1914). We have been puzzling about how and when, and where, they met and traveled, then tied that knot because St. Patrick’s was not either of their church.

Tony came up with an arrival on the "Celtic" in Queenstown, that happened three days before that marriage, and it looked like a piece of the puzzle might be falling into place.

I then asked him if Michael had traveled with her, and the answer was negative.

Later searching,he found a “Michael Joseph Carroll", a saloonkeeper (which was, at least after that, and brothers and cousins were also publicans) had arrived in Liverpool in 1908 on his way to Ulster – but his recorded age was ten years off. That would have eliminated him.

While it could be that there was a recorder’s error (and you know that does happen with these things) we had to dismiss this at this time.

Turning to the marriage registration, Michael had said he was living in Beragh at that time, and Agnes was from San Francisco.

On my father's birth registration it states he was born in Omagh, on George Street. Agnes and Michael had to live there as it was not a hospital. There was a Coady pub, one of Mickey's cousins, in Omagh. Are these indications that Michael had been in Ireland for a while, working as a publican, or even if he owned a pub like he had when the other children came - on Main Street in Fintona.

Now, I have been thinking about this and would raise these issues: We do know that Patrick, (his brother, born 1873 in Corkhill), traveled frequently between San Francisco and the Fintona and Eskra areas. Could this have been just a visit by Michael, and possibly one made with another brother? That is, if there was a mistake made regarding his age (it was off one digit, not 10!).We know he did not permanently return in 1908 because in a review of the 1911 census he was not resident in his widowed mother's place at Corkhill, or any of his brother's places around Omagh, Fintona and Beragh.

We have been unable to find just what Michael and Patrick did for a living in America (Thomas, another brother was busy raising a family in San Francisco, having married Catherine “Kitty” Daley from Newtownsaville). But they did have money, they traveled, and it did not come from farming. I know, there are such things as legacies.

Is there anyone out there that could shed even a glimmer of light on Mickey McCarroll? I appreciate your reading this discourse, but I did want to let the listers know everything there is about this instance.

Looking for any information regarding a James Smith who was born about 1851-1852 in Ballyveeny, Cookstown, Cty Tyrone. James married an Annie Ferguson in a Civil Marriage on 15 December 1874 at the Cookstown Civil Registrars Office, Parish Derryloran, Cookstown. His father is listed as Samuel Smith on the Marriage record. I am trying to trace any information on Samuel Smith. The marriage Certificate also lists that James was resident at Ardtrea, Parish of Ardtrea. James also had a brother named Samuel born about 1855. Any information was be greatly appreciated.

I have now established that my Great great Grandfather Samuel Clarke owned 2 parcels of land in Magherakeel using Griffiths from here http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml search samuel clarke co tyrone
If you click on the map you can clearly see the graveyard and also the house on the other parcel.
Using the 1911 census now online I can see my Grandfather Thomas and my Great Grandfather Thomas Clarke and the rest of the family confirmed by my father (now 81). Link here
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

Maybe these links may help others.

Linda .. Have you ever been able to trace William Hackett and Adelaide Knitter's family ? From memory I think they settled in PA but there doesnt seem to be any threads to follw up. I am interested to know did any of the brothers return to Strabane for their father Williams funeral in 1943 ?? And one for Mary.. did you get that Strabane phot of the Hacketts all together and did you identify any of the people ? I can identify my dad , grand dad and a few others (Uncle Tommie stands out very well ) but there are faces I think I know but just cant put a name to them.
Hope you are all well
Regards
Kieran

OK new update: as of the Irish census of 1911 my family goes like this:GGGGrandfather and Mother - Isaac(95) and Margaret(78) born Down Co. GGGrandfather and Mother William James(3) and Mary Anne(38) nee Faloon. He was born in Armagh and she in Keady. There children all born in Armagh, are as follows: Abraham Isaac(12) my Grandfather, whom changed his name once in Canada to Albert, William James(11), Samuel(9), Jacob Alex(8), Albert Edward(7), David Henery(5), John Lessie(3), and Robert H.E.(5 months) as of the 1911 census. Their Williams sister Elizabeth(55) also lived with them. They all lived at number 6 in Lisran Poyntypass, Armagh. We know that Abraham came to Canada in 09 Jan 1926.We know William James came earlier and was living in Lang, Sack, Canada c/o L.A. Wallace; male or female not sure. When my grandfather left Ireland he was in the police. We also think that Abraham travel with a James Hazelton (he also stayed with William James place) and Thomas Kennely (he stayed in Toronto)as they were also in the police service. William and Abraham also had land grants out West. So if you think we have a link with the family please contact me here. Here is the site for anyone who needs the census for Ireland 1911 www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search Note its FREE!

Hi all,

Ive been trying for some time to do a family tree but have only managed to progress since the 1911 census appeared online.

I am tracing my ancestors who were John McGurk from killeenan who married Mary McKenna. They had 8 children one of which died approx 1911 (Peter born 1909). Mary died approx 1934 when my grandfather (Peter also born 1921) was 13. My grandfather was sent to live with a relative and didnt see any of his brothers or sisters until he was in his 60's. There is a connection somewhere along the line with Lagans but not sure where(only that a lagan married a McGurk). My grandfathers brother Anthony (not sure of birth date) owned a pub in Omagh. Any info anyone would have would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much for your prompt reply and for the information. Were the mother's names also on the source of your information?

For my general knowledge do you know what details are provided in the records of birth held in the Presbyterian Church prior to Civil Registration? I am guessing that the record of the birth of my gg grandmother Arabella Kee who was born in Stewartstown in 1843 would be at the same Church as her aunt was married in. She stated her religion as Presbyterian on her immigration records and was married in the Presbyterian Church in Geelong Australia. I believe the birth records in the First Presbyterian Church in Stewartstown for the period 1814 and 1871 have been microfilmed by PRONI (MIC/1P/48). As I am in Australia I would be interested to establish what information I would obtain should I attempt to apply for those birth details from PRONI.

My main aim is to establish the origins on my Johnston Kee families.

Thank you again
Sally may not have been a sister. Most of my info on the McGurrens comes from oral history. I notice there was a Sally who was a witness at John and Susan's wedding. John died in 38 and Susan died in 67. (See attached) I have met two of John and Susan's daughters in Trillick, and slept in what used to be John and Susan's place in Doughrock this summer. I have a ton of information on the O'Donnells. I would like to call you to discuss this. I will try to send you a direct message.
Mike

Hi Mike

Thanks very much for replying to my enquiry. I have a tree on Ancestry which can be accessed through my username or through ‘Susan Mc Gurren’. I don’t have a sister Sally for her but I do have sisters: Mary Anne (b 18 Feb 1885. Married Joseph McQuaide on 12 Feb 1918), Sarah Jane (b 20 Jan 1889), Celia (b 29 July 1892 and died in 1929) and a Catherine ‘Kathleen’ (b 25 May 1895 and died in Jan 1947). Do any of these look like they might be the Sally you referred to? Attached is a copy of the 1901 census for the family of James McGurren and Alice Campbell listing the children.

Kind regards

Frank
Hi Mike

Sorry I should have put my direct email address on the last message, it is : frankmcgurrin@usa.net I was also puzzled by Sally being a witness at the wedding of Susan and John. I thought firstly that she may have been the first wife of Francis J McGurren (my paternal grandfather) but that does not appear to have been the case. There was also a Francis McGurren (1836-1897) who was the brother of my great grandfather James. That Francis also had a son Francis McGurrin (b 1886) but he emigrated to the USA in 1910. Sally remains a mystery at present.

I also went to Trillick this summer while in Sligo seeing my Mum. I had been in email contact with a very knowledgeable and helpful young lady named Grainne McElroy who is decended from Francis McGurrin (1836-1897). She lives in Trillick and helped me find the gravestone of some of the siblings of my paternal grandfather. I would like very much to know more about the O'Donnells and look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards

Frank

Hi

Thank you for the email address. I have been in touch with Sheila previously, but so far we were not able to establish a connection (although there may well be one, albeit distant). What part are your Clarkes from?
Re what you found for me in the 1901 census: I was also wondering if the children living in Broughderg, but born in the US are the daughter and son of Rose and Hugh? (Or could they be related in a different way/or even from a different family?).

Thanks once again for all your help.

Best regards,
Michelle

Hi

A million thanks for the fascinating information. Very interesting about James and Anne being born in the USA. I now have information that Hugh's wife was called Rose and that the couple had a daughter called Anne (who probably died young).

Best regards,
Michelle

Hi Linda Thanks for sending all the photos. They were great You have certainly collected a lot of information. I saw in 1 of the emails that you were unsure about Rose and Mary Hackett. If Mary and Minnie are the same person Iknow that Minnie married and Ithink her married name was Devlin she had no children of her own and lived near Strabane.Rose was disabled and Ithink had a sweet shop in Strabane. She lived with the Mc Brietrys. Ihave a photo of Minnie somewhere and will send it to you thanks again mary
