Hi

If your relitives lived and died in Dungarvan they would have been buried in St Mary's Church yard. There is a web site of Duganvan church www.county waterford image archives.
I have found Waterford County Local Authorities very helpful as all my relatives were buried in St Marys, and I was able to get the certificates.

Those names didn't come up in my early research, but I'd imagine with several of the same names from the same area, we are probably related! Where did your family emigrate to in the US? My 3rd Great Grandfather moved to Springfield IL, with some of the rest of his family to Chicago, Bloomington IL, and Yonkers NY. I've got someone doing some research for me in the Waterford area, so hopefully I'll be able to find out a bit more about them.
Maybe I'll find your names too!
Searching for parents of Mary McCarthy

Mary McCarthy born 31 may 1855 Boston MASS, died 21 Feb 1933 Wyoming OH. I did find Mary had a cousin named Nora McCarthy who was listed in one of their census records as living with John Fitzpatrick and his family. so I pressumed Mary's surname was McCarthy. She married John Fitzpatrick, I believe his middle name was Charles. He was born Aug 1855 in Ireland. But I can't find where in Ireland. I am trying to find where he died also. I was told by family he died in New York but was not told the City or location. I found him in several sensus records up until 1900 U.S. Census, but not after that. I am trying to find out when and where he died. I am also trying to find out who Mary's parents were and also who John's parents were. John Fitzpatrick and Mary McCarthy had five children, but only have found four: Ellen Ruth aka: Nellie, John C, Timothy, and Eugene. I have located their children and spouses and have posted burial information in "findagrave.com" as well as in Ancestry.com

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I have a family tree in Ancestry.com named:
#1 Missing Links3

Thanks
Ellen
Hello Dan, I found your query by chance today.

As far as I am aware there was only 2 Moore families in Cappoquin at that time.

One of those families moved on long before I was born in the nineteen fifties.

One family line still remains today.

My grandfather James Moore was part of a family of 11 Moores born in Cappoquin in the latter part of the nineteenth century.

Without doing some research, I cannot tell you the names of his siblings.

9 of these siblings emigrated to the USA. Several to the Chicago area.

James Moore my grandfather born 1886 had 2 sons and 1 daughter one son was called Thomas Moore. The other son would have been my father Billy Moore. Also a brother of mine called Thomas born in Cappoquin in the nineteen fifties.

It may be a family name passed down the line.

The Thomas Moore that you are searching for may have been my grand uncle or great grand uncle.

Looking forward to your reply.

Michael Moore...

The Townland of Kilmacomma is in the Barony of Glenahiry, Civil Parish of Inishlounaght, Poor Law Union Clonmel.
You need the parish to find the church records.

The website www.familysearch.org has the 1880 US Census
and there were 3 Thomas Morrissey's but too old born 1820, 1828 and 1830, all St. Louis, MO. The website has a new program found under 'search records' on the main page click on menu PILOT.
There are 348 records there. Only one Thomas Morrissey emigration record 1902 to US. You might try Ellis Island website - free to join. I looked but didn't find a good match.

1)Thomas Morrissey born July-Sept 1882, Clonmel Registration District Tipperary/Waterford #101058 Vol.4, Pg. 569

2)Thomas Morrissey born Apr-June 1882,Waterford Registration District Kilkenny/Waterford #101058 Vol 4 Pg. 786

3)Thomas Morrissey born Jul-Sept 1881 Lismore Registration
#101058 Vol. 4 Page 694

Clonmel Registration District I understand followed the divisions for the Poor Law Union and Kilamacomma Townland was in the Clonmel PLU.

www.censusfinder.com United Kingdom+Ireland+Waterford is a good website, the Waterford Library has some interesting records
www.igp-web.com has some good resource

There are 3 Morrissey's on the website www.eircomphonebook.ie you can write to them with the addresses provided and no postal codes are required.

In 1930 US Census, St. Louis, St. Louis (independant city) Thomas was 49, Jennie 43 born about 1881, and he put his date of emmigration at 1903. and Jennie as 1902. He says married 27 and she 22 but this could be the writing. So it looked like the immigration record on the PILOT would be the correct one except that in 1920 Census he said he immigrated in 1901 and Jennis is still 1902, he became a nationalized citized in 1911..

Annette Code
'genealogy for fun'
They film is also available at the Latter Day Saints but that is where the PILOT came from. AC

There was a mention of a couple of books about the area which I'm sure will give a feel for the area.

Annette

Just concentrate on the males to cut down on postage,
however, sometimes great aunt millie might be the family historian. Also if you cut down the O'Driscoll's to just the places that the Murray's are from there wouldn't be so many, note the left side by towns.

I'm glad you wrote back to save me finding you again. This morning I was trying to find a particular parish for someone. Looked up www.corkandkerry.org the Diocese for Cork and Kerry and a parish map was available. There is a parish called Glengarriffe on the border with Cork and Kerry, it reminded me of Griddaridda although they are nothing alike. There might be something else similar on the website, a lot of people referred to the parish as where they came from, there maybe a Parish on the border with Waterford perhaps.AC

In my family tree, my great great grandmother, Philomene Cassista's mother is said to have been Mary Ann Power. They would have been living in Vermont as this is the place of birth given for Philomene abt. 1846.
As of yet, I have been unable to locate any record of birth oon Philomene only according to her marriage record in 1866, her mother's name is listed as Mary ann Power.
any information would be appreciated.
thank you.
When they emigrated there was no Irish Government, we were governed by the British Parliament in Westminster. If someone wanted to escape from Ireland because of some transgression they wouldn't have gone to England were the British authorities would be waiting for them, they would have escaped to the US or South America.

You will need to search the England 1911 census with the surname variations since many Irish surnames were spelled phonetically in places where they emigrated because of the Irish accent.

The birthplaces of their children will help you find the location where they may be listed in the 1911 census. There will be birth and baptismal records for the children in England which you can get, based on those birth locations you may need to search the actual microfilm records for the 1911 England census locations where the children were born to find the family entry in the census. They may not be listed correctly in the index.

In addition the children's baptismal records may include where their parents were born in Ireland and may also include sponsors names who were related to the family. You can search for the sponsors names in the 1911 England census to find Ellen and her family.

The children's obituaries may also include where their parents were born.

You are relying very heavily on oral history rather than actual records for your ancestors, eg. the elusive Griddaridda in Dublin.....Waterford. You need to search actual records in England for them which are the stepping stones to then commencing research here in Ireland for records in their birth locations.

Why would your great-grandfather HAVE to leave Ireland? No I can't imagine why. There was no War of Independence or other uprising taking place when they emigrated. If there was and he was involved he certainly would not be "escaping" to England. From what you've posted thus far you haven't looked for any records in England as yet.

Ellen and her husband's civil and church death records, cemetery records, tombstones, wills and obituaries are sources in England to search for their birthplaces in Ireland and parents names. Many emigrants remembered family in Ireland in their wills.

Marriages would generally be in the bride's church which would be either the location where she was born or where she lived at the time she married. Her records in England should provide her birth location and parents names, you can then request the civil marriage record here in that birth location with her father's name from her England records.

Ellen's husband's necessity to leave is just conjecture at this point and obviously since you have no record of where her husband was even born in Ireland as yet there's no way to begin to confirm it where he was born. If you want to put some meat on that story you'll have to do more digging in England and find out where he was born and his parents names. Then you can start searching in that location in Ireland to prove or disprove the story.

At any rate GREAT the actual birth record was found for Ellen. Where then exactly does it say she was born and what were her parents names?

You're spinning your wheels and actually wasting your time searching around Ireland for information about your ancestor. You have no official records for her connecting her to Dungarvan at all or anyone currently living there or anyone else in Ireland now.

What you need to do is search her civil and church records in England to find out where she was born in Ireland and her parents names. Then you'd search that location for property records for the family farm and any records there about Ellen's family.

The 1911 England census is online you can search that for her birth year, birthplace and ages of her children. The children's ages will help you figure out her year of marriage. If her daughter was born in Ireland you can request her civil birth cert which would help you work backwards to Ellen's birth location.

Look for her obituary, civil and church death records, tombstone which are more sources to find her birthplace here in Ireland and her parents names.

Great thanks for the info. I've got so much to go on now. Hoping I might have a wedding certificate from Roscommon soon as well. Reckon I might have found my Griddaridda in Garranedarragh in Inishkenny, Co Cork. Two families of O'Driscolls there in 1911. She must have written to her husbands family in Cork. I think it was little more than a collection of farmhouses and has long since disappeared. Looks like the Shea line could prove fruitful. cheers

Eilis I can see your point of view - but it is only a story in certain parts of the family. I don't know if it's true. certainly the last place someone might look is right under their nose. At the same time he might have been involved in a squabble between different Republican groups and needed to flee. Maybe he did something to help the English? Though from what I understand about his attitude to the country he came to live in I doubt it. It's also possible they may have spent time previously in England then returned. So maybe they knew somewhere to lay low - remember Manchester and Liverpool teem with Irish names today because of post-famine emigration. Perhaps friends were here who could help. There were 7500 signatures in Manchester in 1920 to the Irish Self-Dtermination League. I would argue the point that there was no war before Easter '16. The battle to be free goes back to pre-Cromwell.I take your point on church records and i now know where to look for those here in Manchester. Joyously today I have news my Mum's cousin has unearthed Ellen Murray's birth certificate from 1870.

I haven't managed to see it yet but she appears to have been born in Ballymabin to a Mark and Margaret Murray (nee Shea). Shea is a name that appears in Griffith's Valuation in Ballymabin. There is a Margaret Murray in Co Waterford about the right age in 1911 census, so plenty to investigate there.

I can find no reference to them in the 1911 census, though I know they were definitely in Manchester by then. The story is my great-grandfather HAD to leave Ireland, you can probably imagine why and so I think they were loathe to leave a paper trail. They certainly haven't put their name and address into the local street trade directories of the time. I am going to look at parish records but doubt they will give me more info than I already have. Hopefully the GRO in Roscommon can come up trumps with a marriage certificate as I am pretty certain of the date of birth of their first child.

Hi, yes he is my 1st cousin so you must be my 1st cousin once removed. Ann the sister of your grandfather Patrick was my mum, she was known as Ann Curtis after she married. contact me via my email address and i can give you more info. i have started to research my family tree in ireland but without much success as it seems very hard to find out things from years ago.

Maybe if we pool our info we may get further. My brother Steve remembers much more than me so hopefully your dad will too.

My email address is tootsgirleen@hotmail.co.uk.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Anne

David Miller 1806

I wonder if anyone can help. I have recently discovered that an ancestor was born in County Waterford. His name was David Miller and he was born 1806. All I know is that he enlisted in 1825 aged 19 in the 95th Derbyshire Foot Regiment (later the Sherwood Foresters). He served in the Mediterranean and Ceylon as well as England and Ireland. He married someone called Mary Ann and whilst in Ceylon they had a son Thomas born 1844 who incidentally enlisted in the same regiment as his father in Dublin 1859. I would love to know more about his heritage, where he married, who his parents were. If anyone can help please get in touch

Sam
