Actually, I don't think it is a legend. The same story is in my family that Mary Tone was somehow related and that the reason the McGarry family left Ireland (also I have heard we were from Mullingar) was the Wolfe Tone relationship made it uncomfortable for the family as a whole. After my gr-gr-grandfather moved to Niagara, he apparently was the local "banker" who kept a large ledger for donations under pseudonyms and sent the money on to Ireland presumably for the United Irishment or the IRB.
There are a series of baptismal records in the Dublin library showing Mary Tones children with dates of birth etc.
