Dear Ben,
I'm just reading your message re: Whelehans - many years after your first posting. I can verify that there is a townsland Mountrath/Montrath (spelled both ways even by the natives!) near Tyrrellspass, Co Westmeath. I knew of two Whelehans there who lived next door to each other. As far as I recall, they were cousins - Joe and Paddy(?). The ruins of the two houses are still there - only five miles or so beyond the graveyard of Tyrrellspass that you visited. It's a pity that you did not investigate further when you were so close. Could one of the houses have been the home of your Gr Grandfather? I could find out further info from the older people in that area if you wish to follow up. You can reach me on august.dunne@googlemail.com. By the way, have you already checked out:

Joe (Joseph)the youngest mentioned in this link, died around 1970?

Regards
BD
