Most of the www.familysearch.org records only go up to about 1958 that I can see. It is a great resource if it wasn't for not putting parents names in. You can check Australia there as well as it is an international source.

I noticed a Mary Canavan on passenger record to USA

I have their old CD 1864-1875 which does have parents name, but the C has worn out. The R still works, it has birth and marriages, most of the marriages appear to be Protestant from 1845 then about 1867 the RC kick in. This would be far too early for your inquiry.

I looked up the Australian white pages and found 193 Canavan's in Australia. Then divided by Territories? I saw Victoria and NSW and that was on the first page. The death certificate will say where he died so I would concentrate on the phone books names in that Territory for close relations. 1998 you might find an obituary in a newspaper archive that might give family names, and check the death record for the person reporting the death who might be a relation as well.

There are few records in Ireland that would go to 1940's except for the Civil Registration records at the General Registry Office www.groireland.ie there is certain criteria required for the birth record.
