If you go on Scotlands People and look for the death of Christian it is a good start to assume that he might be buried in the same cemetery.

Also the site will have his Will if he left one (free search)

www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

I can confirm that James Fraser must have been an extremely popular name - I keep finding the wrong ones!!

The James Fraser I am looking for was born 1845 in New Deer, Aberdeenshire.
He married Mary Laird Dec 10 1867, and they had 9 children:
1. Elizabeth ( Lizzie) b. 1868
2. Bella b. 1872
3. Jemima J. b. 1873
4. Chrissie b. 1874
5. Jessie Anne b. 1876
6. Marjory McDonald b. 1877
7. Mary Jane b. 1878
8. Margaret (Maggie) Laird b. 1880 (my gr-grandmother)
9. Alexander Laird b. 1885

I have found a census record for 1901, confirming above.
Also a census record for 1851 including a 6-year-old James Fraser, which could be the same person if I could confirm parents or siblings - can anyone help ?

James Fraser was a Tailor, Clothier & general merchant
The old family shop in Whitecairns still stands - it also operated a "sub" Post Office.
James died 7 March 1917.

Would love to find info on his parents or siblings
This is what I found on FamilySearch.org, DOB is August 18, 1720 Baraphial Scotland - I can't find anything else. It could be correct as he would have been 28 yrs old. (spouse unknown) Unfortunately, I can't find anything on Baraphial Scotland, which could be a transcription error (likely). Would love to get anything you may have on this line. trudyjm@rogers.com

My mistake , its a new book..couldn't find it on the web. If you can get the ISBN number a librarian or bookstore could search it for you. If there is no ISBN it might be self printed. Another posssibility is contacting the author. I found 2 possible authors..one Anne Patterson in Ottawa..who writes about people. The other is Anne Patterson Rodda who writes about geneology. The Wellington Branch or local geneology group may have tabs on one.
It is curious that the book is from England (possibly printed there but authored here) and ended up here in Ontario.
Good Luck!
Craig,
I had some luck on EBay finding an old book for our history. Attic Books in London might be worth a call.Gardners Auctions in London Ont. also have frequent online book auctions of older books, maps, documents. Will try to find the name of the supplier I found.
Pam

Elizabeth HISLOP of Aberdeenshire 19C (father Alexander)

I would appreciate any help with my brick wall please.

Elizabeth HISLOP, daughter of Alexander Hislop, deceased tavern keeper of Aberdeen, married John SCRYMGEOUR, painter of 20 Brunswick St, Stockbridge, in the St Cuthbert's Church, Edinburgh on the 13 Sep 1845, Elizabeth was residing at 9 Inverleith Place at the time of her marriage.

There are a few Elizabeth Hislops in the 1841 who might be her but none I can say for sure IS her although I did find John Scrymgeour living at 20 Brunswick St in 1841, he was a painter.

I had a devil of a job finding them in the 1851 census until I happened across them, all entered with initials for given names, even then it was a complete mess (the transcribed version on ancestry).

The family left Scotland on board the 'Pladda' in Aug 1860 bound for New Zealand and they duly arrived.

It's been fairly easy researching the Scrymgeour line after that but I just cannot find anything on Elizabeth Hislop. In 1851 she says she was born in Aberdeenshire and she was aged 26.

I have searched the old IGI (including submitted stuff) and familysearch.org but cannot find a baptism for Elizabeth, a marriage for Alexander Hislop.

There is at least one, maybe two, other Alexander Hislop who had a daughter named Elizabeth in the right time frame but none in Aberdeenshire. There is one in Edinburgh and after searching, paying for certs from ScotlandsPeople, looking in census etc etc I've come to the conclusion they aren't the right family, for one the father was a 'tailor' (and another a mason), besides in 1851 his daughter named Elizabeth is living at home whereas mine is married & living with her husband and children.

I have scoured Scotlands People, the Internet, Papers Past (NZ) and other peoples' trees but to no avail, I'm at a DEAD END!

Elizabeth married again in NZ a few years after John Scrymgeour died, to John Gillfillan REID, I'm waiting on her marriage certificate but as it was before parents' names were added to marriages in NZ I'm not holding out any hope they will be included on it.

I don't have her death certificate so that will be next after I've seen the marriage, but at $26 a pop it's getting expensive so I thought I'd try the other side of the world while I'm waiting.

Crossing fingers & toes....

Cheers....Dawn
I have an old handwritten family tree with many Craigmile names from Aberdeenshire area with approximate dates in mid 1700's to early 1800's I believe. My gg grandfather was John Cooper of Aberdeenshire. His mother was Elizabeth Craigmile b. 1796, died 1883. Her father was Alexander Craigmile (m. to Agnes Taylor) and his father was Wm. Craigmile (m. to Margaret Reid). Any of this information sound familiar? There's more if anyone wants to persue this.
Regards, Ian Cooper in Toronto.

Hi Ian, I am very interested in any family history on Alexander Craigmiles (married to Agnes). He is my 4th Great Grand Father. I have quite a bit of info on his children but not much on him or agnes or his time in Ireland or parents. I know he was one of the flax seed growers in Tyrone county?? Born about 1762. Any info you could share would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Cindy

If there is no R C of E noted on the birth certificate then it wasn't changed at a later date.

If Charles or Smith are not family names then it is entirely possible that Charles Smith is the father but you'll probably never know.

With no father named I would assume he either denied paternity or wasn't around to ask.

Brian
Thanks, Brian

No, his birth certificate only lists him as Charles Smith Murison (illegitmate), and his mother as Maggie Ann Kidd Murison with no father listed.

On his marriage certificate he listed as Charles Smith (formerly Muirson). The same misspelling of Murison/Muirson is made for his mother.

Interestingly, his mother was also illegitimate, and reads very much like his with no father listed. However, on her marriage certificate a father is listed as George Kidd (reputed).

So, although her father wasn't named on the birth, it appears her middle name was a clue. It may well have been the case for Charles as well.

My latr uncle was registered under his mothers maiden name in 1921 as she and my grandfather did not marry till 6 years later but he always used his fathers surname of McDonald. On looking up his date of birth a few years ago i found a corrected entry stating that in 1959 his birth certificate was changed from Smith to McDonald, seems a long time after the marriage of his parents but near the death of my grandfather so maybe they wanted to make sure he was "part of the family".
My late fater was given his fathers surname of Smith as a middle name although he never knew of him.

From what you say, it does appear he simply adopted his father's surname. Do you have his birth certificate? I presume no father is listed but is there any notation in the left hand margin that looks like R C of E

This stands for the Register of Corrected Entries.

Brian

Thanks for your reply.

Your father's situation sounds very similar to that of my grandfather and possibly that of his mother.

Thanks for the response.

Yes, he was illegitimate. Smith is an unusual middle name, and there is no evidence of Smith being a family in the Murison line. It may well be the name of his father.

Similarly, his mother was illegitmate as well. Her middle name is Kidd, and there are no Kidds evident in the Murison line.
