A John Bell married an Amelia Guthrie in Dundee in 1767. James Guthrie, 1st of Craigie, and his wife Elizabeth Gardyne had a daughter Amelia, born in 1739. So this might be one of the connections you are looking for, Don. I have not found a Miss Bell marrying one of the Guthries of Craigie so far.
Joy, think about the dates. If John Bell was married in 1767 and died in 1797, he must have been born in the 1730s or 1740s, so even if he had not moved to Dundee over half a century before it is highly unlikely that the Rev James Bell was still living, let alone siring children, in Arbroath in 1798/9.
Records about this Rev James Bell are conspicuous by their absence. He is not listed in 'Fasti Ecclesiae Scoticanae' which means he was not a minister of the Church of Scotland. He obviously wasn't Roman Catholic. There is no James Bell in David Bertie's book about the Scottish Episcopal clergy, and this was a century before the Free Church broke away. At that time there were just two small breakaway groups, the Cameronians and the Associated Presbytery.
There was a *William* Bell who was Church of Scotland minister of Arbroath from 1748 to 1775, but he doesn't seem to have had any connection to Dundee.
