Hope this helps rather than confuses. I have been tracking my gg grandfather (Richard Sinclair) who lived in the same area as the Fergusons you mention.
Most of my detail comes from D Kenneth MacKellar RR #2 Glencoe Ontario N0L 1M0 and his book, Kilmartin Pioneers 1815-1855.
Let me tell what I see and I would appreciate any info you have on the families and the specifics of their immigrations--vessel, town, farm, parish, city of origin, dates, local experts in Scotland or elsewhere, etc.
This area(Kilmartin-a small hamlet 8 miles n of Glencoe in Mosa Township) was initially cut out of the bush starting in 1826. That year an Archibald Sinclair and wife settled one "plot" and a single man Hugh Ferguson(1798-1876) the VERY NEXT PLOT. They moved from Aldborough near Lake Erie approximately 40 miles north to what was called "the peak of Mosa" in order to have 100 are farms rather than the 50 acres given by Col Thomas Talbot in the Alderbourgh region. Subsequently, nearly all of the settlement of this Kilmartin area was by familes ex Aldborough who seemingly all started with Scotland Kintyre origins (most within a 10 mile radius around Kilmartin, Argyle Scotland - Lochgilphead). Hugh Ferguson was married to Flora (?last name)in 1831. His older brother Donald(1786-1849) who married Jane McLachlan in Comrie Argyllshire in 1818; and younger brother Duncan (1801-1850) & wife Mary McLachlan, who are all thought to have come to Aderborough in 1819 with Hugh from Scotland moved up to Kilmartin in 1828.
Do you have any specifics on the 1819 crossing? How about origination and departure data? I even believe many of the area families may have come as early as 1812 and with the war brewing had trouble moving across from the coast to Canada. I know of some families detail references Caledonia NY and suspect the orignal group ex Kintyre landed at New York or Philadelphia. They came to New Glasgow in Alderbourgh crossing Lake Erie from Oswego NY probably on lake steamers.
One possible source of data would be if we knew what Laird(s) was responsible for the Clearances for the region around Lochgilphead-Kilmartin.
Yours Aye!
Regards, hope to hear from you. Rick
