N.B.: I have heavily edited the above instrument, by rearranging much of the information so that it appears under the name of the child to whom it pertains. Also, it has been re-arranged so that a subject has all the pertinent notes about that subject in one place.
Are "ky" calves "cow calves", being those which are still with their mothers?
John Lockhart of Bar (born circa 1480 - died 1531) had married Margaret Stewart in about 1516, twelve years prior to this instrument. His children named above, who appear to be of adult age, must be the children of his first wife, Janet Muir. FIRST, Note that he says his son and heir is John Lockhart, so SECOND, the son George must be his second son by Janet Muir. Then THIRD, the daughter Janet Lockhart appears to have been an adult, so she too must have been from his first marriage.
There is no doubt but what there was a son named "John" by each wife. John, the father, seems to be differentiating between his two "sets" of children.....When James Stewart, VI, King of Scotland, granted Lefene to John Lockhart in 1575, the grant kept referring to John Lockhart and his second wife Margaret Stewart. Are we supposed to understand that the son John by Janet Muir was having his inheritance revoked? King James VI was a Stewart, and so was John Lockhart's second wife!--Walter Farwell of Iowa.
