Classification: Biography
Surnames: Lockhart, Campbell, Hamilton, Muir, Stewart. Nesbit, Ross, Gordan, Cunnigham, Kennedy, Jamison
ROBERT LOCKHART of Bar (b. ca. 1433 - d. 1486). His son

ANDREW LOCKHART of Bar (b. ca. 1455 -d. 1498). His son

JOHN LOCKHART of Bar (b. between 1476 & 1483 - d. 1531); in 1498 was the ward of Robert Colville; was slain by James Muschet; married (1) Janet Muir. Their children
--1. John Lockhart of Bar (b. 1510 - d. 1575); married Janet Campbell
--2. George Lockhart; married Margaret Hamilton. Slew John Gernane in 1551 and escheated; In 1562, was burgess of Ayr; was a merchant of Ayr; had 'brothers' William and James in 1562 (1/2 brothers?)

Married (2) Margaret Stewart in 1516. She and her husband were granted Auchinbret in 1516, conjunctly. Their children
--3. William Lockhart, born after 1528, flourished 1562.
--4. James Lockhart, flourished 1561, 1562; in 1561, was granted Lenfine.
--5. John Lockhart; youngest son; married Mariota Nesbit, daughter of James Nesbit of Greenholm.
--6. Archibald Lockhart; flourished 1558, 1568, 1580; was living yet in 1608.
--7. Margaret Lockhart; married Archibald Hamilton of Carnduff.

JOHN LOCKHART OF BAR (as above), b. 1510 - d. 1575; in 1531 was granted Bar, Stewart Gallishomes; in 1568 was at the horn for destroying church images in the church of Ayr; in 1570, was at the election of Matthew Stewart as regent; was a supporter of John Knox; it is after his death, that the Castle of Galston becomes associated with the Lockharts of Bar;

married JANET CAMPBELL, Lady Cessnock, about 1535; she was the widow of (1) George Ross of Hanyng, and (2) John Campbell of Cessnock.....She and her 3rd husband had ward of the Campbell lands, and it must have been through Janet Campbell (Ross) (Campbell) Lockhart that the family of Lockhart became associated with Galston Tower. Robert Ross after the turn of the century, sued her descendants -- evidently for the Ross share of their inheritance of her holdings.
Their children:
1. John Lockhart of Bar, b. ca. 1535 - d. April 16, 1614; married (1) by 1549 Alison Muir who had died by 1586. Married (2) Janet Gordan, relict of John Mure of Auchindrane. Married (3) Agnes Cunningham.
---CHILDREN: (1) a son named Andrew Lockhart who about 1590 entered the Church; (2) a daughter Janet who had married John Cunningham by 1624......With no male heirs, he made grants of some of his lands to his brother George Lockhart of Ayr.
2. George Lockhart of Ayr, b. by 1540 -d. after 1626; married (1) Marion Hamilton who has a will dated 1592; married (2) Marion Campbell who died after 1614 and before 1625; was buried at Ayr. His daughter Margaret Lockhart married Alexander Lockhart, burgess of Ayr, and their line continued as the Lords of Bar.
3. Moses Lockhart, who in 1602 was "brother of the Lord of Bar".

ALEXANDER LOCKHART, burgess of Ayr and then Lord of Bar; married Margaret Lockhart, daughter of George Lockhart of Bar......This Alexander's grandfather was Alexander Lockhart, burgess of Ayr, who had flourised 1523, 1547, 1559; this grandfather had been granted Auchinbrat, Dawney, Perisland, Straith, Langhous, Brewlandis, Escheyard; he married Margaret Kennedy......In 1559, John Lockhart (b. ca. 1525 - d. ca. 1608) was son and heir apparent of Alexander Lockhart, burgess of Ayr; he held Taitt'squarter in 1556, 1583; in 1608, John's wife was Marion Cunningham.

Children of Margaret Lockhart and Alexander Lockhart:
(1). John Lockhart of Bar, b. by 1585; married Marion Cunningham; he was provost of Ayr in 1610, 1612. Their daughter Janet Lockhart married John, son of William Cunningham of Dankeith.
(2) George Lockhart, born circa 1590; flourished 1630. He had a son John Lockhart of Bar (b. by 1610 - d. after 1659)who married Barbara Jamison (she is named 1639 - 1672).

N.B.: It is my guess that the many breaks in the main lines of the Lords of Bar are due to the failure of male heirs. Somewhere, it must have said that the various grants could be passed on to sons only......I am interested in the Lockharts because I believe George Ross of Hanyng, d. ca. 1530, is my ancestor.--Walter Farwell of Iowa, and as of July 12, 2007
