Hi Chris,
I just ran across your message I think your William Park (b1827) may be a younger brother of my George Park b 1820 in Stevenston. Have you found anything further back than William? My George's parents were William Park and Agnes Chalmers. Let me know if there's a link and I can give you George's descendants.

Dave

Thank you for your enquiry.

I have sofar been able to discover that I'm descended from Alexander Thom (b. 1750, m. Mary Brown 1779?) of Stevenston, Ayrshire, Scotland through their 2nd son Alexander Thom (b. 1785, d. 1851, m. Susan Esdaile 1809), through their 2nd son Alexander Thom (b. 1814, d. 1865, m. Jane Reid 1834), through their 5th son Alexander Thom (b. 1845, d. 1903, m. Marrion Roe 1865), through their 4th son John Thom (b. 1887, d. 1965, m. Euphemia Lindsay Christie 1913), through their 2nd son John Thom (b. 1920, d. 1980, m. Georgina Hill McLachlan 1948), my parents. I was an only child, 1st generation Australian (my parents emigrated to Australia in 1951) and I'm married with 6 children of my own.

Unfortunately, I don't have any record of those people you mentioned. Where do you hail from? Hope to hear from you.

Jeff Thom - Perth, Western Australia.

Sheline,

I also have the surname THOM in my family line, but at this time can't make any connections to yours. However, my line is as follows, just in case, you never know...... :-)

Alexander THOM born about 1836 married Mary HOPKIN born 17 Jul 1837 Kilwinning, AYR, SCT. They married in Kilwinning on 1 Jul 1864 and had the following children:
David THOM b.15 Dec 1865 New Monkland, LKS, SCT d.13 Sep 1870
Janet THOM b.8 Jul 1867 Old Monkland, LKS, SCT
Jeanie THOM b.11 May 1869 Old Monkland, LKS, SCT
Robert THOM b.14 Nov 1870 Old Monkland, LKS, SCT
Alexander THOM b.18 Oct 1872 Old Monkland, LKS, SCT
Jean Love THOM b.4 Nov 1875 Stevenston, AYR, SCT
Mary Hopkins THOM b.1879 Stevenston, AYR, SCT

Alexander's (b.1836) parents were David THOM and Jane RAESIDE.
Bye for now!

Hi Alison,
You and I have exchanged information on other occasions regarding the Love/Hopkin families of Ayrshire.

The information that I have regarding your query is:
David Landborough THOM /Jean REASIDE, he was the son of Alexander THOM and Susan ESDALE. Although I am far from complete in the information, this may be of some help to you.
See below:
1819 Landsborough Parish List: AlexanderThom, Collier, Susan Esdale, children: Jean, David Landsborough,Alex,
Mary, Janet, *Susan, * Elizabeth Boglemart, Stevenston (Susan with ***)
__________
Census:1841 Boglemart Stevenston
Susan 51, David 28, Janet 20, Elizabeth 18, Margt. 12, William 10, Susan 8 (*note that Alex. Thom not listed)
____________________
David THOM and Jean Reside had two children that I know of, your Alexander b.abt 1835 and Ann born Nov 20, 1839.
David THOM married abt 1851 to Mary DUFF and they had three children three children born to them, Susan, Mary and Jane THOM, that I am aware of.

I also have the 1841 Census for Jean Reside
New St. Jean Raeside, 25 yrs, Alex THOM 4 ys and Ann THOM 1 yr.
There is a Poor Relief record for Jean Reside that I will share with you Alsion if you would like to contact me off list.

Hi Alison,

I have on my lists -
Alexander Thom (b. 1835, d. 1888, m. Mary Hopkins 1864)
Children: Robert Thom (b. 1860), Alexander Thom (b. 1872),
Jean Love Thom (b. 1875) and Mary Hopkins Thom (b. 1879, m. Gavin Barclay).

I don't have David Thom (b.15 Dec 1865, d.13 Sep 1870) Janet Thom (b.8 Jul 1867) and Jeanie Thom (b.11 May 1869) as their other siblings or anywhere else on my lists.

Thanks for that, much appreciated. Is there a way for me to verify this information?

Regards,

Jeff Thom - Perth, Western Australia.

Hi Linda,

My branch of the Family Tree goes through Alexander Thom (b. 1814, d. 1865, m. Jane Reid 1834) who was a younger brother of David Landsborough Thom (b. 1811, d. 1877, m. Jean Raeside 1834).

I understand their father was Alexander Thom (b. 1785, d. 1851, m. Susan Esdaile 1809) and Grandfather was Alexander Thom (b. 1750, m. Mary Brown).

I've got a list of 146 descendants, so far, of Alexander Thom (b. 1750) of which I'm one of them.

It would be interesting if we could compare notes.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Regards,

Jeff Thom - Perth, Western Australia.

Hi Alison,
Your Thom family are the same line as mine. I go back to William b. 1830 to Alexander Thom and Susin Esdale. I did not have all of the children of Alexander and Mary Hopkins, only Janet, Robert, Alex, Jean Love, and Mary Hopkins, so thank you for that.

I have this family in 1881 and 1901 in Stevenston but have only got Mary Hopkins married to Gavin Barclay and no more details of the rest of the children. Would like to know what happened to the rest of the family. I would very much like to share any of my Thom information with you if you can contact me at Mairifrew@aol.com.

I also have a David b. 1860 to David Landsborough and Mary Duff but he died 1861.

Hi Jeff,
Thanks for the reply to the post.
I have several interests involving the Thom's of Stevenston.
I am curious as to whether you have any information on your Jean Reid married to Alexander Thom in 1834. Do you know who her parents were?

Reid's of Stevenston are one of my main surname interests. also following in the Thom line, I have Hamilton LOGAN daughter of John LOGAN and Agnes Thom, married Stevenston. Agnes being the daughter of your Alexander Thom and Jean Reid. So we do indeed share a family.

John Logan's mother was Hamilton LOGAN daughter of William LOGAN and Mary Reid of Stevenston.
I will be happy to contact you by email and share the information that I have on the descendants of Alexander Thom and Mary Brown. (17 pages)

Thanks again Jeff for the contact and I will speak with you soon.
Best regards,
Linda.....

Jeff,

I found Mary (ms HOPKIN b. 17 Jul 1837, my 2nd great grandaunt) in the 1881 Census with Alexander THOM and five of their seven children. I found all the children listed on the microfilms of the Scotland Birth Indexes. Some of the children are also listed in the IGI. I still need to look in the indexes for Mary H. THOM (1879) to track down her birthdate.

I do have more on the ancestors and siblings of Mary HOPKIN (1837), if you would like that information. Hope this helps. Bye for now!

Genealogically yours,
Alison
