Agnes,
An Index to the 1821 Census for St Quivox has been published by
Troon FHS - unfortunately this Census only gives the name of the head of the household although the original Census, held at Ayrshire Archives, gives the ages of the males & females in the family, but not their names.
I have no Monaghans in my family, that I know about, although my father used to work with a Peter
Monaghan many years ago as a signalman on the Railway.
I had already deleted your email but when I saw your son's response, his warped sense of humour appealed to me so much, I decided to respond to your email, so if the info. is of any use you owe him a beer! :-)
My Murphys (Murchies) were in Monkton in 1841 & 1851. I take it you have checked the 1841 Census for Monkton?
I am currently transcribing the 1841 Census for
Newton on
Ayr as part of the Freecens Project - I'll keep my eyes open for any Moanaghans - did find a Wallace family as follows:
Green Street Vennel Wallace MaryF20 Hand
Sewer Ayr Wallace Janet F18 Ayr
Wallace Jane F15 Ayr
Wallace Sophia F6 Ayr
Wallace Alexander M4 Ayr
There is an entry in the Monkton
Churchyard MIs for Monaghan:
MI 189
Erected by William
Monaghan in memory of his son James d 13 Apr 1882 aged 17; the above William
Monaghan 2 16 Apr 1893 aged 62; his wife Sarah
Monaghan d 24 Apr 1905 aged 79; also their son in law Hugh bell d 9 Feb 1907 aged 49; and his wife Susan
Monaghan d 2 Aug 1936 in her 78th year.
If this is your lot I'll take a photo first time I'm in the vicinity.
There are also 5 entries in Monkton
MIs for Wallace & 2 in
Newton Green
MIs.
Best Regards
Duncan
PS: Tell your son not to lose that sense of humour :-)
