Telfer Family

I would like to hear from anyone who is researching the Telfer name. I have a family history back to my husband's great grandparents, Thomas Telfer, born in Scotland, married to Jane, b.1826 in Scotland,(maiden name unknown).
Thomas may have had a brother, George, who came to America and settled in Michigan. Children of Thomas and Jane: John Herkess and Margaret, twins b. 1853, Frank, b. 1855, Peter, b. 1863, Alice, b. 1863, Jane,b.? and Ellen,b.?. Jane and Ellen were the only ones to stay in Scotland after others came to America over the years of 1871-1891. Jane never married. Ellen married a Tate and then a Melrose and had several sons, names unknown to me. John Herkess Telfer was my husband's grandfather who settled in the Reading, KS area.

Thanks in advance to any information anyone might have.

Sincerely,
Eileen Telfer

Hi
I'm Fiona Tait (nee Telfer). I've been researching my family name on and off for quite a few years now. My direct line of Telfer's come mainly from Straiton, Ayrshire and were on the farm Glenauchie for a few generations. I'm afraid I've not come across the names Thomas or George so far. I'm sorry I've no good news for you but thought I would respond anyway - hope you get lucky. E-mail me if I can be of any help.

Cheers

Fiona

Thought I would drop you a note. I was brought up in Colmonell until 1946 as a young boy ( my Dad was the schoolmaster) and I remember a David Telfer, who farmed near Knockdolian. He also played bridge occasionally with my father. I guess David would be about 90 , if still alive today. Also remember the Hutchesons from Belhamie farm.
Talked to a George Robertson a couple of years ago, when visiting Colmonell but have no roots there now.

Hi Tom

David Telfer was my father, he died in Sept 1997, my mother remembers the Welsh family from the schoolhouse. I afraid George Robertson died about a month ago.
Email me direct if you want anymore Colmonell news

My ggrandfather was John William Telfer. He married Anna Hokenstad. Their daughter, Ruby Eleanor Telfer was my grandmother. I would very much appreciate any help. My family has not kep good records, therefore, I have no further information and cannot find anymore generations back. Is this the same line?

Eileen,

There are two births recorded to Thomas TELFER and Jean HERKES in the IGI records.

Francis TELFER b. 24 AUG 1856 Humbie, East Lothian, Scotland

Peter TELFER b. 29 MAY 1860 Humbie, East Lothian, Scotland

And a marriage recorded between Thomas TELFORD and Jane HERKES, 28 MAY 1847, Humbie, East Lothian, Scotland

Keep in mind that Jean and Jane are fairly interchangeable in Scottish records. Also, surname spellings were at the whim of the recorder.

1881 census - this looks like your family with twins John and Margaret.

And finally, with birthplaces from census, this is a possibility for Jane's birth:

Jane HERKES, b. 28 JUL 1825 Crichton, Midlothian, Scotland, daughter of John HERKES and Jean STEEL

If Thomas and Jane died in Scotland, you can check on the GROS website for death register records.

Hi Jo Ann:

Thank you for the information in your reply. I have been away from the "Telfer" side of the family for some time now and have been working on my side of the family which includes Cornell's, Hibbets's, McKenzie's and Pittaway's. I ran into such a stall with the Telfer's I had about given up.

But I appreciate your information and will get back to the Telfer's soon.

Sincerely,
Eileen Telfer
