I am searching for information regarding a Barbara Isobel Carradus, born Sug. 23, 1923 in the Manchester, UK area. In 1945 she married Wesley S Gleason - they divorce in 1947 and then I believe she married a Gerald C. Pitcher in 1953. She has a sister, Audrey F. Carradus born Sept 1930 in Manchester South, Lancashire, England. Barbara would be my aunt and I would love to know if she is still living. Thank you for your help
Susan

Dear Angela,
Thank you so very much for that information - I knew nothing about what happened to Aunt Barbara after she and my uncle divorced. My mother had a few letters from her but Mum passed in 1971 so can't even ask her! My uncle passed in 1999 too so I am th eonly one left! I will certainly look up her son - hopefully it is her son - and will go from there. I thank you so much for takin the time to do this - I am in Florida, USA - not that much access to UK information although I do have a few cousins who live there - this I just discovered a few years ago while doing my genealogy of the William Glass family of Tristan da Cunha. My extended family is growing leaps and bounds!
Sue

Hi Sue,
Since writing earlier I have found likely children of Barbara Isobel Carradus and Gerald C Pitcher - namely Nigel C Pitcher born North East Cheshire, England in Oct - Dec quarter 1954 and Anne Pitcher born Jul - Sept quarter 1956 - all of which doesn't help at all as you may already know this.
However,I again looked on 192.com and found that in 2002 - 3 Electoral register there is a Nigel C Pitcher in Berkshire, England with a Lucie Pitcher and Sally A Pitcher at the same address.
Since Barbara Isobel would be very elderly by now I thought that maybe you could contact the son.
I do so hope you can access the website and can get the address. There is also a phone number available in the same way.
Hope any of this helps and good luck with your search,
Angela

Hi Angela,
Thank yo so much for checking on this for me. Barbara would be my aunt - she married my uncle in 1945 but they were divorced in 1947 - have always wanted to get in contact with her as I have in my possesion some letters she wrote to my Mum when I was born. I am not certain if I can get to the web site you are referring to but I will certainly give it a try.
Thanks again,
Sue

Hi,
I just tried to see if I could find anything in the UK for Barbara Isobel Pitcher for you and, having had no luck, did a search on 192.com which shows phone numbers, electoral rolls etc.
I did find mention of a Barbara Isobel Pitcher on an electoral roll for 2002 but, since I have no credits, I could not view the result.
It might be worth your while to look on this site, do a search and buy some credits to see if the person is your relative - for the address will then be given to you.
Angela

I have a Marriage Document (Dumfries-1862) for Jane Lennon b.abt1843 that lists her father as Alexander Lennon, deceased, and mother Charlotte Robson. The bride's residence is listed as Fountainbleau Cottage near Dumfries. I can find a Charlot Robson on Kirkmahoe Census in 1841, 18yrs old. I can find a Jane Lennon of right age living at Fountainbleau with grandfather Charles in 1841, but cant seem to find any Alexanders at all. If Charles is Jane's Grandfather, I'm assuming she's the daughter of one of his sons. I see, from other censuses, sons John, Charles, Francis, James and William....but no alexanders......(John has a duaghter Jane but i dont believe it is the same one as she shows up on later censuses not married and still living with her dad)

In researching my family tree I have now traced it back as far as a James Kirk b.1733.
I am now trying to trace his parents, which I think might be around the Durisdeer area of Dumfries.
In looking up the names of either James or John Kirk around this period, I seem to have many hits of a James Kirko, the famous Covenanter.
His parents were John and Agnes Kirko.
A million to one that I am related to him, but there again somebody is.
It would be nice to establish some further facts and details about him.
James Kirko was served heir to his father John in 1647, laird of Sundaywell, Dunscore.
On one occasion he asked John Osbtirn to bring his youngest son to see him, so by inference he had at least two.
On 13th May 1685 he was shot on the sands of Dumfries.
When was he born, did he marry, where any of his children christened or baptised?

He left Scotland with his wife Margaret Maxwell (1806-1878) to retire to Silloth, Cumbria between 1861-1871. He died there in 1892. In his will he mentions James Swan Thomson, I am having difficulty tracing him, but presume Swan Thomson is a relative of Andrew's.

Hi Beth,

Just a skim of the records show that the various versions of the name make it difficult to trace. So far I find the following styles:

Sidserf/Sydserf/Sideserf/Sidserff.

These are essentially the same name but in an age of limited literacy many people did not know how to spell their own name and relied on the person recording it to transcribe it as they thought best.

The Hugh you mention initially, was born 24 Jan 1809 in Gorbals, Glasgow to Hugh Sideserf (sic) and Margaret Stevenson and died in Barnhill Poor House in north Glasgow on 15 Oct 1881 aged 72. He was previously married to Helen ArmstrongYoung b. 1813.

His son, Hugh Sidserf (sic) was born in 1841 (d. 10 Dec 1895) married to Jane Johnston b. 1839.

Their children as follows:

Sarah b. 08 Apr 1862
Andrew b. 09 May 1864 (died shortly after birth).
Helen Young b. 26 Apr 1865
George Johnston b 23 Jul 1866
Andrew b. 04 May 1872
Mary Hamilton b. 18 Feb 1874
William b. 1880

It would appear that the original trades of the family were as Handloom Weavers (Cotton).

Hope this helps,

Graeme.

Edinburgh

The closest match I can find is a John Morison christened 10th February 1805 in Moffat. His parents were John Morison and Jean Dunwoodie and it looks like they also had the following children, all born in Moffat:

Archibald Morison, christened 08 May 1803
Agnes Morison, christened 02 Nov 1806
Alexander Morison, born 28 Jan 1801
Helen Morrison, christened Oct 1797
William Morrison, christened 25 Feb 1796

Hope this helps...

Trevor

Graeme,

I can only go back to Hugh Sidserf DOB 1809 married to Helen. His son was Hugh Sidserf, 1841-1895 married to Jane Johnston (Johnson). I can't bring up any other people with the Sidserf spelling before Hugh (1809, everything stops, so I "assume" possibly he did a name change. But I would greatly like to know who Hugh's ancestors are. My father died in 1973, and there are no other Sidserfs I have any contact with. His sister and her husband are deceased as well as their only son.

I sincerely appreciate any help you can give.

Thank you for your reply,

Beth

Hi Beth,

The names are interchangeable as there was no set spelling of anyone's name in early times and was written down as the writer thought it may have been spelled.

Sidserf/Sydserf, according to Black's Surnames of Scotland originates in the area of North Berwick in East Lothian and Sydserf House and Estate is just south of North Berwick.

The name is first mentioned in the records of the 14th. century.

Suggested may have been French in origin.

What dates are you looking at?

Hope this helps.

Graeme

Edinburgh

I am still desperately trying to find a link between the Sidserf family and Sydserf(f) families. I have been told they are one in the same. I can only go as far back as Hugh Sidserf. Might anyone know of a connection or why my family's name is spelled differently. It is a mystery to me. Any help is GREATLY appreciated. Plan to get to Scotland in the next couple of years, specifically Lanarkshire - seems to be where a lot of Sidserfs were.

Beth Sidserf-McKinley

Trevor,

Thank you! That gives me leads to go on and I really appreciate your help. I also appreciate the information that marriages were held in the brides parish. That will help me in another line I am also working on. The website for the graves has been awesome. Thank you for everything!

Tricia

Penpont - Alexander Fergus(s)on/Janet Dickson

Hi anyone interested.
I'm researching these two names in Penpont and surrounds. It appears that I am a descendant of John Dickson Fergusson thru John b~1831 g/child of above. This is tentative but he seems the best candidate so far. Interestingly, the 1841 census shows no Dicksons living in Penpont then. 1851 does. A lot of my research is based on the Penpont page at Ferguson DNA project by Murray Love. This page is harder to find, it seems because it doesn't yet lead back to the Lairds of Craigdarroch. My assumption only. There are quite a few trees that claim Alexander & Janet as antecedents but the citations are not strong.
Does anyone know more? Is the DNA project page accurate?
Any help or advice muchly appreciated.

Hi Tricia

I've found a marriage entry for David Davidson and Mary Crichton on 2nd Sept 1842 in Dryfesdale, Dumsfriesshire. This seems to fit with with children's ages on 1851 census with the eldest child, William, recorded as 8 years old.

On this census it shows David as being born in Dryfesdale and Mary in Middlebie. On the 1861 census this is the other way round. I suspect given that marriages were usually held in the bride's parish, that the 1861 census is correct.

I have David's death entry from ScotlandPeople.gov.uk, which gives his parents' names as Robert Davidson and Janet Graham. There is a possible marriage for them on 10th Sept 1802 in Canonbie but I'm not too sure about this.

Even with Mary's death date, I can't identify a death record for her?

Regards

Trevor
Do you have any info on Alexander Boyce in Scotland? I have info on him in Canada, and his family, but I am seeking info on him in Scotland. I know it is stated he came from Dumfries in a lot of places, but I cannot confirm that through any sources I have checked. I don't even know his parents' names. Any info you have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
