"I live in Williamsburg, VA where there is a large decorative arts museum, the DeWitt Wallace Gallery. I noticed an old sampler there on display, stitched by "Sarah Bruce Butt" and sent for information from the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. There was a family tree marked on the back of the sampler: Robert Butt, Sr. of the southern branch of the Elizabeth River in Lower Norfolk County, VA of Blacksworthy Plantation, b. 1615/20 d. 1676 married ca 1643 Elizabeth Jane Ann Bruce, known as Jane, of Earlshall Castle, Fife Scotland. They were the 4th Great Grandparents of the stitcher. According to the information received, Robert & Elizabeth Jane had two children, Richard b. ca. 1645, d. 1727, and Thomas b. 1650, d. 1710. Both sons are listed "of Norfolk County." There is more info, but I need to set it out in a family tree. Hope this helps."
I have not heard back from Kathleen or the Museum but it hasn't even been 24 hours yet.
The reference I refered to in my first post was done by a professional Genealogist inn 1967. I have not seen the book but have quotes from it in my King family tree done by a cousin of mine Wilbur Roy Reese.
One more thing- I found a Google Book 'Session Book of Bunkle & Preston 1665-1690' pg 154 "Alexander Bruce of Earlshall married Eupham Leslie... two daughters-Elizabeth, Lady Durie, and Janet, Lady Braksmonth.
I sure hope these Elizabeths are the same but I'm not sure. What information do you have?
