Thanks so much for your responses and suggestions.

I posted on another board also and someone there suggested that there are places named Linkens in the nearby parish of Rerrick, Nether Linkens & Upper Linkens. (There seems to be a possible family connection to Upper Linkens so this is the best bet so far).

I was able to get a copy of the 1861 census. Its for Glenlocker Lodge,Crossmichael Parish with Robert Carruthers,head of household,married to Mary Lindsay (27yrs). Robert looks to be 'a Shepherd away to Linkenson'. Ann Wallace is his mother.

If anyone had access to the census record, I would never turn down an offer of having another set of eyes for an opinion. But I wouldn't want anyone to inconvenience their own research as it seems Upper LInkens is a likely location.
