Hi Stephen
Am also researching Moonlights and have a fairly detailed tree - I too have some problems linking branches up! From info passed to me from other areas, see what this does for the price of your fish:
- John 1765: Would he be John 10.2.1765?; I have him as one of four children: James (1.10.1763), [John 1765], Janet (4.1.1767), Helen (2.5.1769). James marries Margaret Richie and I have descendents down their line to Ann Napier Moonlight (16.12.1844).
If you are linking his father John 1740 to James (31.10.1703) I have James 1703's known children so far as:
- James (2.4.1731)
- Robert (17.4.1733) - subsequent son Robert (4.9.1755)
- Alexander (13.1.1738)
My known tree goes back to David Moonlight (b:7.4.1740 - m: Janet Simpson) and have been advised that his father is James 1703 - if so, this would make David brother to your John and if this is correct I have a branch of the 'David' side researched to present day (at my grandmother Marion Duncan Moonlight). I had found the 'John 1740' branch but had it as an isolated section and couldn't link it to my side - if James 1703 is correct for both of us that is interesting!
Somewhat confused by the Thomas 1802 and 1833: have them as descendents of my David/Janet Simpson branch; am I wrong? Line (in reverse) is as follows:
- Thomas (30.9.1833 - St Vigeans, Angus) - one of five: Elizabeth, William Scott, John, Elizabeth (again). Have dob's for these if useful.
- father=Thomas (7.5.1802 - St Vigeans, Angus) - m: Agnes Stott. Thomas 1802 is one of eight: William, John, Anne, James, David, Magdalene, Elizabeth. Also have dob's.
- father=John (22.12.1769 - Old Machar, Aberdeen) - m: Magdalene Scott. John 1769 is one of three: John (24.12.1768), [John 1769], Margaret 18.5.1773).
- father=David 7.4.1740 - David/Janet Simpson branch.
Please let me know if I have this wrong and have linked the Thomas' up incorrectly because if so I'll have to go back to the drawing board!
I have Robert 1674 in my tree but didn't have a date for him (he was one of my sticking points) and didn't know about his father James 1653 at all so that is useful. Had found Archibald, but have no dates and couldn't link him in until now - do know that he had a daughter Margaret (6.3.1652 - Kinneff/Catterline, Kincardine) who will therefore be sister to James 1653 (dates for that sound right, although it would need substantiating).
The additional info you have posted is fascinating! I know my father mentioned the Moonlights going to the US but he didn't know where/when. I have approx 80-100 of them mapped in my tree now so any info I have which would be useful let me know. Would love to know more detail on your grandmother's line going forwards (mother/siblings, etc). I find the Moonlights fascinating because there only seems to be this one tree - everyone seems to relate into it, very spooky! :-)
Kind regards
Annie
