Hi James,

Found a bit of information on the Proudfoot family - James Proudfoot and Janet Marchbank's marriage registration, christening references for James and some of his siblings and a few census records.

Statutory registration of births, marriages and deaths in Scotland began in 1855. All carry the names of parents, however, for deaths the informant had to have knowledge of them for the names to be mentioned. If you get the death registrations for James' parents, they should include the names of their parents. Statutory registrations and census records from 1841 to 1901 are available online on the Scotlands People website. There is a small charge for viewing the index and registrations (or census pages), but it is well worth the cost for those of us researching from abroad.

(from Scotlands People)
1870 on the Ninth day of December at Johnstone Place after Banns according to the Forms of the Established Church of Scotland:
Groom: James Proudfoot, labourer, bachelor, age 32, Residence: Johnstone Place, Parish of Johnstone
Father: William Proudfoot, labourer
Mother: Jane Proudfoot, m.s. Bell
Bride: Janet Marchbank, dairymaid, spinster, age 20, Residence: Johnstone Place, Parish of Johnstone
Father: Samuel Marchbank, foreman of railway company carters
Mother: Margaret Beattie, domestic servant
Officiating Minister: George Wight, Minister of Wamphray
Witnesses: John Proudfoot and John Catton
Registered: December 14, 1870 at Johnstone
Notes:
- I don't think Janet's parents married. Notice the difference in how the two mothers' name were listed.
- There were a couple of Samuel Marchbank's in Dumfriesshire old enough to be Janet's father on the 1841 census. 1. Living in Kirkpatrick Juxta Parish (b.c.1831), but is on the 1851 census still with parents in Kirkpatrick Juxta, occupation, son of farmer. 2. Living in Dumfries (b.c. 1828), does not appear in Dumfriesshire (or anywhere else in Dumfries & Galloway) in 1851. May have died or immigrated elsewhere.

Note:
- this was taken from a transcription - Mary Johnstone was listed as a daughter of William Proudfoot, and although I didn't see a christening entry for her, I would think the transcriber made a mistake in writing her surname as Johnstone

1851:
Name: PROUDFOOT , James
Address: Williamson
Parish: Johnstone
Relationship: lodger in household of John Paterson
Marital Status: unmarried
Occupation: SHOEMAKER apprentice
Age: 14
Born: born Johnstone, Dms
Household No: 4/24

(think this was William and Jean's oldest son)
1851:
Name: PROUDFOOT , John
Address: Woodend
Parish: Johnstone
Relationship: household of William Halliday
Marital Status: unmarried
Occupation: SERVANT farm
Age: 16
Born: born Johnstone Dms
Household No: 2/55

I believe this was Janet Marchbank and her mother Margaret. The transcription listed her as the daughter of Marion Spoat, but think this was a mistake. You would have to look at the actual census page for clarification.

Found this in a message from someone who was posting spare registrations they had received (marriage registrations come two to a page, so you generally end up with some you aren't interested in, but others may be):
