Milne - Rothes - 1860's

Classification: Query

My grandfather, James Inverarity, was born in Breich Street, Rothes in 1864. He was the illegitimate child of George Inverarity and Elspeth Milne. I know George emigrated to Australia, married an Irish woman and had another 9 children. I can find, however, no trace of the hapless Elspeth. Kirk Session records for Rothes record that Elspeth was compared to appear before the elders. The union had been consummated in Leochel-Cushnie in Aberdeenshire where the pair were farm servants. Elspeth, apparently, had returned to have her child at her brother's house in Rothes. My problem is that Milne is a common surname in the area. I can find no record of Elspeth in the 1871 Census. Did she marry someone else ? Did she end up in the workhouse and die there ? James seems to have been 'boarded out' by the 1871 Census.
Can anyone help ?

Thanks !

Colin Inverarity
