Arrivals in the Hebrides

I am doing some fun research on mainland and lowland clans or septs that found their way into the Hebrides and posts from visitors to my website at http://westernisles.wordpress.com would be most welcome.

I am hoping to scotch the generally received version of events which says that all the traffic from the Outer Isles during the 1800s was one-way. I know this is not the case as my own family tree in the Long Island shows 'blow ins' from Skye, Islay, Perthshire and sutherland.

A list of clans might include:

Bannerman (Uist)
Beaton (Skye, Uist) - Mac Beatha, Patanach
Black (Uist) - Mac Ille Dhuibh
Boyd - Mac Ille Bhuidhe
Buchanan (Skye, Uist) - Buthchanain
Cameron (Uist) - Camshron
Carmichael (Skye) - Mac Ille Mhicheil
Ferguson (Skye, Lewis, North Uist)
Fraser - Friseal
Grant (Skye) - Granndach
Gunn (Lewis)
Johnstone (Skye, Benbecula) - MacIain
Kennedy (Lewis) - Cinneadach
Laing (Uist)
Lamont (Skye, Uist) - Mac Laomain, Lamonach
Livingstone (Skye, Mull) - Mac DhunnShleibhe
MacNiven (Skye, Uist)
Montgomery (Skye) - Mac Iomaire
Munro (Skye, Uist) - Rothach
Murray (Lewis) - Muireachaidh
Robertson (Skye, Mull) - Robasdan
Salmean (Uist) - actually of Finnish origin

I am going to Jura in May to research my McArthur ancestors. I know there is a museum there. I want to find out any information on a Neil and Maysie McArthur, son Archibald and daughter Jessie Neil (Nelle). Neil,Maysie and Archibald were in Ardmenish in 1803 and Neil probably died shortly thereafter. I believe my ggggrandfather,Peter McArthur, born 1747 (most likely in Scotland) and died 1847 in North Carolina, was a son of Archibald. Has anyone been there that could direct me to where pertinent records may be kept. I will only have one afternoon and the next morning for my search. Is there a cemetery in Ardmenish?
Thanks for any help.

Beverly Hall

My ancestor John Maguffe (records of the time also spell his name: Maguffee, Maguffie & McGuffey) arrived in the Colony of Virginia prior to 1670, the first date we find records of him in North America. I have traced the name enough to realize that in antiquity it was MacFie or MacPhee and later spelled MacGuffie. I also discovered the MacFie Clan lived on the island of Colonsay in western Scotland. I would like to know if anyone has suggestions as to how I can search for parents of John Maguffe. I don't even know where he was actually born or from where he came prior to arriving in Virginia. Anyone with suggestions? Perhaps, it is hopeless--too many Johns in the records. Which records might contain traces of him?
Additionally, through which site might I find a history of Colonsay? Perhaps its small size precludes my success thus far, but I would like to find a local history of Colonsay.

I am from Benbecula and doing some historical research into emigration from the Uists in the early 1800s. I would be grateful for any information on these families, many of whom died from smallpox on arrival in Nova Scotia. Their names are not typically Uist in origin which intrigues me and they are - Lowther, Carmichael, Maxwell, Neilson, Grant, Ferguson, Black and Samson.

If I get any returns on these, I have another batch of names I will post later. Settled in Birch Grove.

Also two sisters, names unknown, one reportedly married a McLean from Donkin when she arrived in Cape Breton.

Any information on the North Uist connection appreciated.
Murdo McCaskill b.c. 1780- Kilmuir, Skye to Lewis to Nova Scotia

Looking for Help. I am related to a Murdo McCaskill (as opposed to the more conventional spelling- MacAskill) b.c. 1780 who apparently came to Nova Scotia from Kilmuir area Isle of Skye through Lewis in the early 1800's. He was married to a daughter of a Duncan Ferguson, origin unknown. Both Murdo and Duncan settle in the Lower River area of present Antigonish County and later (c. 1830s) go to the Little Narrows area in Cape Breton where they remained. My grandmother, Katherine Mary (McCaskill) Ross was Murdo's granddaughter. I have no details on Murdo's parents or siblings, but I have his descendants in Nova Scotia. Can anyone help? Cheers, Donald, Halifax, N.S. Canada

I am looking for the birthplace of Daniel McKaskle, born about 1770 in Scotland.
The particular spelling of the name is said to have come from a letter from King James, in which he thanked the McKaskle's for their support (against their Clan Macleod Chief’s wishes) to support his son "The Bonnie Prince Charles" in his fight to return the throne of Scotland back to the Stuarts. The head of the family proclaimed "If it is good enough for our king, it is good enough for my family!" and since it has always been spelled that away.

Daniel is said to have come to America about 1790 and married Mary Ann McCoy who had come over on the same boat with her father, William McCoy.

They went to North Carolina and then Alabama.

Hi,
I am trying to gather information about Lauchlan McKinnon and his, wife, Mary Mackinnon (maiden name),their family and forebears.
I have an unsubstantiated IGI entry that Lauchlan was born on the Isle of Muck, in 1749, to Fereachor McKinnon and Caristina (Christina?) McKay, who were married there in 1746.
The next record I have is Lauchlan's marriage, to Mary, on 29 Mar 1781 in Kilninian & Kilmore, Argyll. Their daughter, Sarah (Marion) married Norman McLeod on 24 Dec 1811. Norman was born in Salen, Kilninian but sometime after the wedding, the family /families moved from Kilninian to Tiree, where Sarah and Norman had their first three children.
In 1817, they moved again from Tiree to Torosay, on Mull. Norman became the farm manager of a 600 acres farm at Ardachoil. There the family multiplied to ten children and there Sarah and Norman died.
If anyone out there shares my research or can help in any way, I would be grateful for your response.
Cheers,
Sue
Hello List Members
I am researching family history and my current brick wall is Halket McDonald. Halket is recorded on his 1837 headstone in the North Embro Cemetery, as being a native of Sutherlandshire. I have not been able to identify his parents or siblings. The OPRs for Dornoch and Golspie indicate at the thime of his Dec 1830 marriage, he was of Skelbo Moor. I have not found any other record of him. It was suggested that given the unusual christian name of Halket that I try this list. Has anyone encountered Halket during their research. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Regards

Larry MacDonald
Sarnia Ontario Canada

Dear Hebridean Cousins,

I'm looking for any info or relations with Smith Families in Pictou County, Nova Scotia. My Smith family were all suppose to be found there in the mid 1800s. I have a GGG Grandmother ____ Smith (Do not know first name, maybe Christina, from Lewis)who married my GGG Grandfather Angus MacDonald (from the Isle of Lewis) in the early 1800s (possibly around 1819 on the Isle of Lewis, SCOTLAND). They had a big family. Later this Angus MacDonald (my GGG Grandfather) lost his first wife, ______ Smith to death, and later married a Morrison of Victoria County. Any info or relations? Both marriages produced children for my GGG Grandfather Angus MacDonald. Have more info if needed. Please Contact.

Kyle Porpotage
Kylemp14@aol.com

Ross in Cape Breton

Hi folks!

I had originally posted the information below last October. Since then, thanks to Bill Lawson and others on this site, I've been able to find some info that suggests that Alexander Ross lived (at least a little while) in Uig Parish, Lewis, in Scotland. And he, his wife Mary MacKay (or McKay) and his family may have come to Cape Breton around 1827.

Because he settled in the St. Ann's area, I'm trying to determine what, if any, relation he had to the other Ross settlers in and around Munro's Point in the North Gut of St. Ann's, Cape Breton. Also, the Ross pioneers in the adjacent settlements of North River, Englishtown, Big Harbour, Plaster, and even Boularderie. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has information about their pioneer Ross families in these areas of Cape Breton. I'd be happy to share what I have with them. I'm hoping this would help me to identify the siblings, and ancestors, of Alexander Ross.

Original posting below:
My gg grandfather was Alexander Ross, born about 1788/89, who married in Stornoway a Mary MacKay.They emigrated to Canada about 1820 and landed in the St. Ann's area of Cape Breton, N.S. later settling in Little Narrows, N.S. They had a large family of 8 or 9 children, two of whom were my g grandfather John, born 1827 (or 1832) in St. Ann's, Cape Breton and died 1895 in Little Narrows, and his older brother Donald, born 1813, who lived in nearby Jubilee. I am trying to find out more information about both Alexander Ross and Mary (MacKay) Ross. I know little about where they came from (i.e. were they both from Stornoway?), and how they got to St. Ann's (i.e. what ships, routes, etc.) . . . .

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Donald.

I am seeking information on James McPherson who had a son, Donald McPherson about 1660 in Inverness, Scotland. Donald McPherson married Janet Cuthbert about 1685 in Inverness and his Father is James McPherson, but there is no other information on James. Donald and Janet had a son, Donnaidh (Daniel) McPherson on 10 Dec 1692 in the vicinity of Inverness, Scotland; Donnaidh died March 1755 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, USA. Does anyone's research include these ancestors? I have traced the line from these McPhersons all the way to myself - and would appreciate any help you may lend to my search for James McPherson and beyond.
McCormicks of S. Uist

It appears that my forefather to Canada (Donald M'Cormig) came from S. Uist with his brother (Angus) on the Alexander in 1772.

Family legend says that we originally came from Ireland.

In Canada, the family seems to have settled for a time in PEI, then moved to Cape Breton in the Big Pond area. Eventually, the line moved to Glace Bay. The line may have lived for a time near Albion Mines (now called Stellarton), as my great-grandfather was born there (we think).

Any and all information on the McCormicks of S. Uist would be greatly appreciated.

Regards
Angus MacDonald; Isle of Lewis

Hi Yall,
My Great Great Great Grandfather, Angus MacDonald (Possibly from Gress, Isle of Lewis) and his wife, ______Smith (do not know first name, maybe from Tolsta) and thier children including Ann or Annie, Lewis, and my great great grandfather Angus MacDonald (1826-1900), nicknamed "Little Angus" and maybe other children emigrated from Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, Scotland in 1834 to Boularderie Island, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada.
They just came from there. My Great Great Great grandfather Angus MacDonald (who remarried a morrison after ___Smith died and had more kids) was a farmer on Boularderie Island and he got a grant of land there in 1834, when he emigrated. Angus MacDonald or "Little Angus" married Sarah McLeod (1840-1914) and they had many children including my great grandfather Norman Edward MacDonald (known as the Scholar of Glace Bay, NS). Angus and Sarah decided to move to Ontario in 1878 but after packing and selling there farm to a Mclean family they decided not to go at the last minute, they thought it was not ment to be, something like that. So they relocated to Glace Bay, Nova Scotia. I have more info this was just a excerpt. Have a ton of info!

Some of the current MacDonalds of this family are still in Cape Breton, and some of McLeod family descendents are in West Virginia.

If any one has connections with this Cape Breton family or info on the family or anything please email me. Especially the early part of the family. Any Connections at all! Any info or anything!

Kyle M.
Hello,

I was wondering if anyone out there would have information on the McCormicks who lived on the Isle of Eigg during the 1700s and who had largely emigrated to Canada by the end of that century. I have read and heard that these McCormicks may have originally come from South Uist and, prior to that from Ireland, but there is no further evidence. Any clues would help.

Thank you,

Gary McCormick

I need help with a location in Scotland, possibly on the Isle of Skye. The placename is "Totaroam." I can't find it in any online gazetteer, and a Google or Yahoo search simple brings up a handful of genealogical references that are the source of the name in the first place.

Does anyone recognize the placename? Or recognize is as a misspelling of one?
