Hi again, I found a paper on Iowa deaths and burials Itsays Charles was born in south wales on March10,1847 in south wales and that he was a retired coalminer. Also says Frank Martin was his father and his birth place south wales too. They did not list any names for mother only that she was born in south wales also.I also have info that charles martin was married on June 27, 1875 in boone iowa. It shows spouse as Mrs. tilley.I know this is my great great grandmother as she was married to a george tilley from england than later divorced. I dont know what toen is in south wales but I always heard something about Pontypridd?

I have to say that this is proving rather difficult to get any info that will fit with all the rest. You say that you found Charles's parents info from an obituary?Desperately perhaps, looking for further clues;Have you seen any official documents relating to Charles's marriage to Hannah? There must also be some documents relating to both Charles's immigration and granting of US citizenship?

Regards
William Russell Jones.

hi thanks for the info. I have seen the passenger list too.Someone told me that he came over here with 2 brothers dont know the names. In his obituary it says his parents were Frank and maryan. Cant find much on him. He was suppose to have came from south wales. All i do know is that he came to iowa and was a coalminer and married hannah (batt) tilley who was married to george tilley they were from england and she came to usa the same time my great great grandfather Charles came here.

Looking at passenger records there is a possible Charles Martin in 1872,travelling with a possible brother Richard.Have you found Charles in the 1880 Census,he doesn't show too readily?

Regards
William Russell Jones.

Catherine - we named our house Tan-y-Bryn Lodge when we moved there in 1991 - the Lodge name did not exist before this. The lane alongside was called Berthes Road at time we moved there- possibly an English version of Welsh word berth [a hedge in Welsh]; it was then changed to the Welsh version Ffordd-y-Berth in the 1990's. Our house was created by a 1989 renovation of an old building, possibly used as a garden shed/storage for the big house in the 20th century - there was a walled garden in that area of Tan-y-Bryn's land. I will need your grandfather's name and address when I check the paperwork. A property called Y Berllan did exist on the site in the 19 century. I'm very intrigued too now!

Hi,

Another request for assistance please. I have found a reference to a farm called Tan Dderwen in Llanrhaeadr-yng-Nghinmeirch. Unfortunately I haven't been able to locate the farm on my modern OS map. I would be very grateful if someone could point me in the right direction.

Thanks,

David

"Pen y Bryn" Farms in the Llanrhaeadr-yng-Nghinmeirch Area

Hi,

I would appreciate some local knowledge to help me sort out farms in Llanrhaeadr-yng-Nghinmeirch. I have been tracing my Edwards, Roberts, Williams & Jones roots in the area.

Tyddyn Uchaf, Meini Llwydion, Rossa Fawr and Groesfordd all have some family associations. "Pen y Bryn" also has an association. Ugh. There are so many hills in Denbighshire. I can eliminate Pen y Bryn Llwyn. There is a Pen y Bryn Isaf down the road from Groesfordd. One Census refers to Pen y Bryn Park. Is Pen y Bryn Park - Pen y Bryn Isaf?

Any guidance or comments would be very much appreciated.

Thanks,

David

Oh my goodness--thank you for your message. My mother stayed there as a young girl, on vacations from Canada. One night, she was asked to play the piano for Wavertree's guests. She was very nervous but it went off okay. It would be interesting to know if my mother knew your grandmother and sister. I am not sure what the dates would be that she was there. My mother's uncle had something to do with the training of Minoru, the horse which won the Derby, so I would guess it was before WWI.
If only I had asked more questions when my grandmother and mother were still here! A lesson for us all.

I'm not sure where it is now though! Out of the top of my head, the connection he was looking for was correct. I remember that a lot of information came from USA war records, where middle names were important and linked back to Ruabon. The wider family also farmed on the Gardden and originally came from Montgomeryshire? I'll see if I can find my notes??

Re: Jones, Miles, & Webb families from Wales immigrated to US in 1842

You are going to struggle looking for Jones' in Wales without more information!

The Hindoo sailed from Caernarfon to New York, arriving on 28 May 1842, and looking at the group of Jones' you have identified:

142 William Jones 25 Quarryman [born c1817]
143 Robt Jones 30 Labourer [born c1812]
144 Evan Jones 19 Labourer [born c1823]
145 Owen Jones 21 Labourer [born c1821]
146 John Jones 24 Labourer [born c1818]
147 Griffith Jones 21 Labourer [born c1821]

1. The occupation of "Quarryman" usually points to the north-west of the country, as the majority of the slate quarries were in Caernarfonshire or Merionethshire. This would also fit in with a departure from the town of Caernarfon.
Of course there is the possibility of stone, rather than slate quarrying, and this might fit in with Cefn Mawr.
But I believe there was no real quarrying industry in the south of the country, which might rule out Llandeilo, Mountain Ash, Merthyr Tydfil and Rhydfelin?

Where did you get all of these variations?

2. As they emigrated in 1842 they should all appear in the 1841 Wales census. Unless they were from Cefn Mawr! The entire Ruabon census for 1841 is a "lost" census, so you will get no further in this case.

3. The passenger list does not include anyone with the surname Miles or Webb.

4. The name Mary Sion is dubious. "Sion" is not a Welsh surname but is possibly a patronymic? "Sion" is just the Welsh version of "John", so I would suggest she was simply "Mary John" or "Mary Jones"?

5. In the notes attached to your Ancestry tree you have "They landed at New Orleans, LA and went up the Mississippi by steamboat to Galena, Illinois", but the Hindoo sailed to New York? How did they get to New Orleans?
Looking for the Jones's,
Looking for any information on the Jones Family including Robert Jones b: 1813, William b: 1817, John b: 1818, Evan & Griffith b: 1821, Owen b: 1823, William b: 1835, Margaret b: 1840, Richard & Sarah A b: 1841, Joseph Henry b: 1844.

Owen Jones was my g-g-grandfather. Robert was his brother and we believe the others were siblings or somehow related to the same family. They arrived in the U.S. we believe on the ship The Hindoo in 1842. They were a family of coalminers. We have recently learned that their parents may have been William Richard Jones b; 1800 and Mary (Sion or Zion) b: 1801 but we can't confirm.

We think they were from somewhere in or near Cefn Mawr, Denbighshire, Llandilo Fawr, Mountain Ash or Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan, Caernevon, or possibly Rhydfelin.

They may have been traveling on ship with the WEBB and/or MILES Families. They immigrated to Pennsylvania initially and then relocated mostly in Illinois.

Would love to chat with anyone who might know about this family.

CBullis
