Hi Sandy
I too have explored the Griffith Jones line but it remains inconclusive, not least because if you look at the 1891 census for the son Hugh Roberts, he is listed as "nephew" to a Martha Rodgers. It suggests that both parents had died by this point as the daughters are also all out in service. We have so far not been able to identify the correct death record for Hugh.
If one followed the 1891 census, it would mean that Ann Jones was the daughter of Thomas Jones and Letitia Thomas. There are some family members who believe this to be the correct parentage, however, although they did have a daughter Ann, she was born in 1832 a full 10 - 12 years before the evidence supporting my ggggrandmother Ann Jones as being 43 at the time of her death in 1886 in Acrefair.
I think the only way we are going to get to the bottom of this is to find the marriage record for Hugh and Ann - thank you for your advice on that front too. My father has already spent much time and money on that but unfortunatley kept no record of those he had disgarded. He did search much wider than St Asaph he says, including Liverpool.
We have also been unable to uncover the burial record for Ann Roberts who died Nov 1886 in Acrefair. My guess is that they were baptist/ methodist/ ... a grave might throw a little more light on things.
Thank you again.
Julie
