In old Welsh names,pre 1600,children had no second name as such, they were know by who their father was.David son of James or Gwen daughter of James. In Welsh this was ap for son of and ferch for daughter of, therefore Owain ap Hywel or Angharad fersh Maredudd ( the single welsh f is pronounced as an English v and the double ff as an English f.
