As you Welsh links appear to be back in the 1600s it's more likely that you will be looking for the name "Llwyd" rather than the anglicised "Lloyd"?
The surname is a 'personal characteristic', and the Welsh word 'llwyd' translates into English as the colour 'grey'.

However, the castle and the "Valley of the Lloyds" do sound rather romanticised to me? I think that the "Valley of the Lloyds" could be a descriptive term, used within the family, rather than a geographical place name?
