Hello Chris,

By now I know that you have found your answer to this post! I am related to you through my great grandfather Edward Arthur Jones. His father Dr. Edward Jones and your grandfather Richard Trevor Jones were brothers as you kindly explained to me in your email.

Thank you for your help in my genealogy search for my Welsh ancestry.

Duw a'th fendithio,
Eileen

Aberdyfi Electoral Roll Look Up

I'm on the trail of Evie May King and last week managed Somerset Heritage Centre, Glamorgan Archives, Treorchy Library and Gwent Records Office in 3 days, unfortunately I ran out of time and couldn't manage Dolgellau too !!!

She was born in 1911 in Street, moved to Gelli in 1918 and then lived in Aberdyfi after she was married in 1937. I'm trying to find out where she worked before she was married. I couldn't locate her in either Street or Gelli in 1936 Electoral Rolls.

Would anyone be able to look up the 1936/7 Electoral Rolls for Aberdyfi to see if Richard Trevor Lewis is resident at 52 Copperhill Street (with or without his father Evan Lewis). I would then perhaps be able to assume Evie was working in Aberdyfi too as a domestic servant.

Thank you in advance.

I am a descendant of Elizabeth Pughe of Helygog 1790 -1827 who in Nov 1814 married John Pughe of Rwiwogo Tal y llyn 1787 - 1827. This Elizabeth is sister to Robert Pughe 1788 - 1822 who in Nov 1834 married a Margaret Pughe 1807 - 1890 born near Darowen Mont. All I know of Elizabeth's mother was she was Sarah and born circa 1761. There is a will of a Lewis Pugh of Helygog 1790 in which he mentions his wife Catherine daughter of Rev Hugh Pryse. But there are letters of admin for a Lewis Pugh in 1743 and they are rather odd! His widow is a Gaynor Robert and she is renouncing his estate in favour of his son called Howel Lewis. She also refers to a Lydia Owen as the deceased widow of the deceased Lewis Pughe.
I am trying to join up the dots down to my Elizabeth. Can anyone help?
Best Regards to all
Robin Hassall

I have not heard of any links between Lincoln and Hedd Wyn. President Lincoln's Gt Gt Grandmother was Sara Evans born in the USA in the early 1700's to parents who had emigrated from "somewhere" in Wales in the late 1600's. If there is a link between her and Hedd Wyn it would be very distant and finding it would be almost impossible.

New to Welsh reseach. Descended from Quakers who went to PA in 1680s

Recently discovered my Taylor, Houlston, Evans, Jones, Roberts and Price lines all go back to Quakers who settled in Pennsylvania in the 1680s and 90s. The last four were Welsh. David Evans, son of Edward ap William, married Mary Jones 23 8th mo. 1690 in Pennsylvania. Abel Roberts b. Jan 1677 in Wales, son of Robert Ellis and Ellin his wife, married Mary Price in 1701 in Pennsylvania. If any of these lines are familiar, I would love to hear from you.
My genealogy library is well supplied with PA works and I have seen Merion in the Welsh Tract by Thomas Allen Glenn, which links some of these families to Merionethshire. I know Pennsylvania research, but know nothing about Welsh records, especially Quaker records 400 years old. Would appreciate any help you can offer.

This is the first page from a document on Rowland Ellis of Bryn Mawr which was sent to me some years ago:

Descendants of Rowland Ellis

Generation No. 1
1. Rowland Ellis. He married Margaret Humphries

Child of Rowland Ellis and Margaret Humphreys is:
Thomas Ellis, b. May 27, 1863, Merionethshire, Wales, d. June 11, 1760, Exeter MM, Berks Co, PA.

Generation No. 2

2. THOMAS2 ELLIS (ROWLAND1)1,2 was born May 27, 1683 in Merioneth, Merionethshire, Wales3,4, and died June 11, 1760 in Exeter MM, Berks Co., PA5,6. He married JANE HUGHES7,8 October 31, 1712 in Gwynedd MM, Berks County, PA9,10, daughter of JOHN HUGHES and MARTHA CAIMOT.

Notes for THOMAS ELLIS:

Immigrated to Berks Co., PA, from Wales in 1707 (Steve Curry)

Church Records: Selected Areas of PA, 1600s-1800s

Exeter MM:

Church Records: Selected Areas of PA, 1600s-1800s

26/5/1757 - Bonds in the hand of Thomas Ellis ordered lodged in the hands of his son Mordecai Ellis. 29/7/1762 - Memorial: Thomas Ellis of Exeter Meeting born in or near Merionethshire in the North of Wales in 1683; came to Pennsylvania about the 24th year of his age and soon after was convinced of the Truth, married Jane Hughes, dau. of John Hughes of Gwynedd, in 1712. Visited Friends in back part of Virginia ... died 11/6/1760.

He converted to Quaker when he came to America.

His criticism of Squire Boone's (this was the father of and sisters to Daniel Boone) daughters caused Thomas to move his family to N.C.

According to some family notes, Thomas was very childlike near his death.

Notes for JANE HUGHES:
Jane's last name has been recorded as Hughes, Hugh, and Pugh.

Children of THOMAS ELLIS and JANE HUGHES are:
i.	JONATHAN "JOHN"3 ELLIS11,12, b. June 18, 1713, Berks Co., PA13,14.

Notes for JONATHAN "JOHN" ELLIS:
died young

ii.	MORRIS ELLIS15,16, b. September 12, 1714, Olney Valley, Berks Co., PA17,18; d. 1714, Olney Valley, Berks
* * * * * *

These are only two of ten children of Thomas and Jane Hughes. I have not checked any of the records mentioned though.

Marion Eames also mentions Rowland having a son Thomas in her book "A Secret Room". She also mentions that Rowland was imprisoned and his possessions in Wales were confiscated because [as a Quaker] he would not swear an oath to the king. So I don't know that he was all that wealthy when he went to the property he had in the PA.

My Ellis connection is through my mother, Annie May (nee Ellis), whose family came from Llanenddwyn and is said to be connected to Rowland somehow - but I'm only back to the 1790s.

Jim Latimer jlatimer@yahoo.ca
I am at present quite skeptical of claims that Thomas Ellis who married Jane Hugh was a son of Rowland Ellis of Bryn Mawr. In his book /Merion in the Welsh Tract/ Glenn devotes an entire to chapter to Rowland Ellis. As far as I can tell that chapter does not once mention a son named Thomas. Also, the level of wealth appears to be quite different between the two men.

I am also descended from
Thomas Ellis and Jane Hugh
Ellin Ellis and Thomas Lee
Jane Lee and Moses Roberts
Aaron Roberts and Elizabeth Lundy
Aaron Roberts and Matilda Farquhar
Elizabeth Roberts and Stephen Smith
Aaron Thomas Smith and Rachel M Dewees
Irving James Smith (my grandfather)

Yes, I speak of Evan Roberts. Thank you for your response. Perhaps we should compare notes on the Roberts family. I was not the one who identified his date of birth. Rather, I found that online and have been trying to associate my Evan with the one born in 1815. The age matches exactly, however I just do not have anything in my possession that can corraborate the birthdate and location. My fear is that we may be speaking about two Evan Roberts. My Evan had the middle initial "W", which I think stood for William. Any further information or comparison of trees would be welcome.

2OCT1815 birth at Fach Goch? That would be Evan Roberts, also my great great grandfather, son of John Roberts and Catherine Roberts (nee Jones). According to Russel A Bankson, in his unpublished manuscript (c.1950s), "'Fach Goch' stands today as it did a hundred and twenty-five years ago, a solid two-story stone building, in the valley adjacent to the sleepy little saltwater hamlet of Towyn-on-the-Sea, in North Wales. Then as now, it was an old and weathered and comfortable-looking, against its peaceful background of low mountains, forest trees and green vegitation (sic). The exact age of 'Fach Goch' is not known, but for generations it was the citadel of the Roberts family..."

Dear Tegwyn,

Thanks for your contact.
We are indeed related - 5th cousins or something like that. Margaret Pughe who married Owen Jones (1816) was a sister of my great-great-great grandfather Robert Pughe (1788-1852). My mother's maiden name is Pughe. (Dorothy Audrey Pughe - b. 1931 - ) Her father was amongst the last of the Pughe family to live at Helygog. My mother grew up in Sunderland, but has lived in Norway since the 1950's. My father is Norwegian. We live in Stavanger, Norway.
Another relative, Gareth Williams, has done some research into the family history. If you supply me with your e-mail address, I will send a pdf of his charts.
Yours faithfully
Robert P. Johannessen

Tegwyn,

I wonder if we may be connected. If not, as you have a brother who still lives in the village, I would be grateful for information about the village, and any history.

My gg grandfather, John Jones, was born in Llanymawddwy in 1805. He had several siblings (unfortunately, none called Owen). His grandfather (Richard Griffiths) spent (I think) all his married life in Llanymawddwy in a farm called Troed y Rhiw. The trouble with patronymics is that the surname is never a good guide to actual relations.

I wonder if you can help?I am researching on behalf on my mother-in-law Gwyneth Jones, formerly of Capel Garmon. Her grandmother Ellen Anne Morris was born in Penmachno in 1875 - daughter of John Morris(born abt 1851)and his wife Margaret (born abt 1852). They lived at 2 Machno Terrace, Penmachno in the 1881 census. Ellen Anne Morris died shortly after childbirth in 1899. I don't know anything else about this family line. Does anyone know if it is connected to the Morris family of Penmachno in this discussion please?

Because both of his parents came from large families there are quite a lot of us around who are distantly related to Hedd Wyn. His closest living relative is probably his nephew Gerald who has just retired from working the family farm, Yr Ysgwrn. The farm has now been acquired by Snowdonia National Park and is to be developed as a museum and an interpretation centre.
Thanks for that additional information; I have found your man! Clifford Morris was the son of Joshua Morris (1908 – 1967) and Olive Harris. They were married in the Oct Nov Dec quarter of 1934 in the East Glamorgan registration district.

Joshua was the son of Jesse Morris 1875 – 1953 and Ann Williams his wife, Jesse and his family moved from Trawsfynydd to Glamorgan sometime between 1901 and 1908.

Jesse was the son of David Morris (1830-1900) and Catherine Hughes (1834-1909) (David was also a local poet known as Morgrugyn Edern). Jesse's siblings included the Joshua Morris I mentioned in my last post and Mary Morris (1864 – 1950), she married Evan Evans in 1886 and amongst their children was Elis Humphrey Evans - Hedd Wyn, so that makes you Hedd Wyn's first cousin twice removed.
We are looking for a Jeremiah Roberts who was baptised at Llangar Church in 1814. He did have a brother Thomas 1812, John and Edward and a sister Miriam. Jeremiah and his second wife Margaret nee Jones moved to the Twywn area with his son Edward b 1862 and daughter Elinor (Ellen)b 1864. Margaret died 1878 and Jeremiah 1888. Both are recorded as being buried in Twywn the service taken by a Titus Lewis but we cannot find where they were actually buried. Any help appreciated.

I have recently acquired a copy John Richards, Brynmelyn, Llanuwchllyn Last Will & Testament. This John Richards was my grandfather's great grandfather and the father of Magdalen Richards Brynmelyn, who later lived in Penbryncoch, Parc from 1850s onwards. Grandparents and 4 yr old grandson are recorded in 1891 Census residing at Penbryncoch farm:

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/MER/Llanycil/1891f.html

Magdalen Richards Brynmelyn and John Roberts Llanddwywe/Pyrse Llanuwchllyn were married 26 November 1851 - both fathers name and occupation appear on the marriage certificate.
Not sure whether this John Richards Brynmelyn was related to JONES , JOHN RICHARD ( 1765 - 1822 ), Sandemanian Baptist minister ; b. at Bryn Melyn , Llanuwchllyn, Mer. , 13 Oct. 1765 . [educated at the school kept by Thomas Davies ( 1751 - 1781 ), then minister of the ‘ Old Chapel ,’] and was originally a member of the Independent church there; he began to preach there, but changed his denomination and was baptized by Henry Davies ( 1753 - 1825 ) (q.v.) of Llangloffan , at Trawsfynydd , 7 June 1788 . He was ordained, 4 Nov. 1789 , minister of Ramoth chapel in Llanfrothen, Mer. (the focal point of the Merioneth Baptists ) and its branches. Between 1789 and 1798 he was one of the foremost preachers of his denomination and was regarded both in North and South Wales as one of the leaders of the Particular Baptists . He then came upon the works of the Scotsman , Archibald Maclean , in which he found what he considered to be a fair exposition of New Testament teaching and a better portrayal of the simple Christianity of the Apostolic church . He now sought to revert to the sacraments and rites of the Early Church , to emphasize the intellectual side of faith, to abjure the popular style of preaching with its Methodist fervour and its perpetual use of parables, and to frown upon the ecstatic ‘jumping’ of the congregations. Between 1795 and 1798 Christmas Evans (q.v.) was of great assistance to him in spreading his ideas, and when, at the ‘great debate’ held at Ramoth towards the end of 1798 , J.R. Jones seceded from the ‘Babylonish’ Baptists of Wales and formed his own connexion, the ‘ Scottish Baptists ,’ it was Christmas Evans who felt the blow most keenly. J.R. Jones recruited a considerable following (they numbered at least 350 in 1807 ) and his connexion still survives in the districts round Harlech , Ffestiniog , Glyn-ceiriog , and Rhosllannerchrugog . For twenty-four years he was his people's general, tirelessly walking over his widespread ‘parish,’ refusing on conscientious grounds to accept any salary, and faithfully spreading the truth as he saw it. Of his five published books, three are collections of hymns (by himself and other writers) while two deal with the principles and tenets of his connexion. He was a man of brilliant, many-sided ability, interested in every branch of knowledge. He was, to some extent, conversant with Latin , Greek , and Hebrew , was something of an engineer , took an interest in mathematics , and, all his life, practised in his own way as a country doctor . There is evidence of his melodious voice and of his ability as a singer , and he was acquainted with the rudiments of music. [At least one of his hymn-tunes, ‘ Ramoth ’, is still familiar.] He delighted in the art of poetry and was the religious teacher of the poets Robert ap Gwilym Ddu and Dewi Wyn (qq.v.). To convince, to argue, to expound the Scriptures, to discipline the will — these were the outstanding characteristics of his teaching and preaching. It was in his nature to be positive, dogmatic, and certain of his own mind, but he was also strong in his convictions, self-sacrificing in his services to his people, and imbued with a profound piety. Ap Vychan ( Robert Thomas , 1809 - 1880 , q.v.) said of him: ‘ he was the greatest man ever nurtured in Merionethshire .’ He d. 27 June 1822 .

The burial records we found at Dolgellau show that Margaret Roberts was buried in Twywn on 28 Nov 1878 and Jeremiah Roberts buried in Twywn on 17 Apr 1888.

Thank you so much for taking the trouble to check on this grave stone. It is much appreciated. So it tells us that my 3rd great grandmother Ellin, wife of Edward EDWARDS of Ty Coch died in 1836 aged 65. This is rather strange. This would mean she was born in 1771. She was married to Edward in 1802 and would have been 31 then. She had 7 children that I have seen birth or baptism records of. These were born in 1808, 1812, 1814, 1816, 1818, 1821 and 1825. She would have been 37 when she had her first child and 54 when she had the last one. This is quite old to be having a child. Also there is an Ellin Edwards aged 55 recorded at Ty Coch living with Edward Edwards and two of the children in the 1841 census. I suppose this could have been a second wife or even a sister but it is all very mysterious. Anyway I am most grateful for your help in visiting the cemetry and I guess I will have to try researching other avenues to make sense of the data.
Regards
Brian

Re: Llanfor Chapels

I believe that the parish of Llanfor at one time was very big. It may have incorporated Llawr Bettws which has its own
Capel Glanrafon still. There is a chapel at Cefn Ddwysarn close to Llanfor. Again just up from there is a farm called Ciltalgarth which was once a small township. There is an old road behind Ciltalgarth with a tiny hamlet called tyn y bont where there are now just houses but earlier some of these buildings had been a chapel and a mill etc. There was a chapel at Rhydywernen. Also Capel Saron. Now some of these are nowadays classed as Llandderfel but as I said Llanfor was before Llandderfel a more important parish.
This is just what I have discovered from my own research in the area and perhaps someone else may not agree or know different but that is perhaps something for you to be looking at. If you phone Dolgellau the archives for merioneth in Dolgellau library they are the authority of course. Good luck with your research.
Regards Menai Dillon

I am trying to trace my g.g.gfather David Evans a farmer living in Llanfor Bala in 1861-1891. Llanfor is a tiny place with only a handful of properties. It may have a small chapel.
Coincidentally or maybe not his son born in 1841 was Richard Evans, who was Married in 1879 and lived in Coventry working as an Iron Fitter in the 1881 census.
Any info gratefully received. Best wishes Malcolm Wright
