Hi there,

I have come across your post while doing some research in to the mines in the local area. Pennygreen (llanidloes) consists of a old factory that has now been converted in to flats that runs along the river, There is also Penny Genygreen farm, and a number of Victorian house that still remain on penygreen road. As for the mines in the area there a 3 that are in walking distance of llanidloes, First there is Van lead mines, these mines north/east of llanidloes, Secondly there is byntail lead mines, they are located next to the dam just north of llanidloes. and then there are the mines that I am looking in to now. these are the closed to llandloes and as yet I have know name for. south of llanidloes. Hope this helps.

All the best
Scott Tanner
Trails Outdoor Pursuits

Thanks for the quick reply. I was confused by the "guest cottage" advertisements that came up when I searched but you have cleared that up for me. I really appreciate that.

Yes, we were aware that my grandfather was illegitimate. We also had very little information about his mother and other family members but I took a chance on this birth certificate when I saw his name and Llangadfan in the FreeBMD index for around the time he was born. The only thing that doesn't match exactly is the certificate says his birth date is april 13 but on his passport and other paperwork he had april 15. I know he was living with his grandmother in 1891 and that maybe over time he came to believe the date was the 15th. What do you think?

POSTSCRIPT

You have probably picked up on the fact that, as no father's name is given on the birth certificate, William was almost certainly illegitimate: not all that unusual in 19th century rural Wales!

As you may know, Llangadfan is a small township in Montgomeryshire a few miles from Llanerfyl.

HENEFAIL is almost certainly the name of the cottage or other abode where your grandfather was born. Welsh HEN means OLD; EVAIL may be short for GEVAIL, a SMITHY. So my guess is that the translated name of the abode is 'Old Smithy'.

It was quite common in the 20th century for old cottages in Wales to be renovated and let out as holiday cottages. This was certainly what happened to the Montgomeryshire cottage where my own great-grandparents lived until the 1930s. So it would not be unusual, now, to find a Google search flagging up such properties as holiday accommodation.

Hope this helps!

I just received what may be my grandfather's birth certificate which I have attached. Under the column "when and where born" it has "Henefail"then "LLangadfan". When I search for henefail on google maps or just in google it separates into "hen efail" and seems to refer in some instances to guest cottages etc.

I would appreciate any help in understanding what this refers to.

I am looking for ancestors of Edward Lawrence thought to have been born in Forden in Aug. of either 1884/5 or 1887/8. Married Margaret Andrew on March 7 1913. Found him in 1901 census but not the 1891. If he was possibly an orphan or lived in an orphanage would there be any way to trace him. Would it be possible to find any records. Thanks

Yes not the most unusual names for Wales. I have found my great great great grandad and now I'm stuck. I have him on the 1871 census. Married to jane jones. Living at little gate cottage Kerry. I think I have just attached a photo. I'm not sure how to make sure I have the right Richard in the earlier census. Would I try and find his marriage records to get his fathers name? Not quick sure what I'm doing as new to this.

Hello,
Perhaps another route you might try is
In the area of llanrhaeadr ym Mochnant, montgomeryshire,
There is on the 1861 census a district of Llanrhaeadr called Henfache. Lots of people on my tree live in that area and within Henfache on page 4 of 11 there is an area
where they have houses down as Commins, I believe it may have been at one time Common Land ?/
Certainly in 1861 there are various residences there.
It may be late for your relative b 1786 but this could be checked on the 1841 census.
sometimes Henfache is down as a place on its own and other times it is down as a district of Llanrhaeadr ym Mochnant.
Because it is so close to what is written down on your ancestor's document I just thought it may be worth looking into??
Good Luck
Menai

Common practice in chapels up to early 1970's for young girls to be cast out of the congregation for this "sinful offence". In 19th C and early 20thC common practice for young girls to be send to the workhouse for the birth of the child only in most cases to be let back into the family. As an earlier post stated most such children raised by his grandparents as part of their family and even when girls went on to marry the child stayed with its grandparents

Mike,

This is where I get lost. I know all of my John Richard Edwards' (DOB: 13 Nov 1874) children and they do not match yours at all. I have a couple of references noting that his father was "Richard Edwards" and that his mother was "Caroline Tudor" so likely true. Just can't nail the specifics just yet. That's Caroline not Catherine.

It seems there was another Richard Edwards and perhaps a Catherine Tudor marriage in the same area of Wales with DOBs about the same. Your "Richard Edwards" perhaps is not my Richard Edwards. Or perhaps just a different marriage, an entirely possible scenario.

My John Richard Edwards came to the USA in 1887 and is buried in Manchester, NH. Had children named: John Richard Jr., William Daniel, Christina E., Dorothy Campbell, Elizabeth Euphemia, Isabelle Shakespeare, Luena M, Caroline Ellen, Clarence Robert.

If you or anyone else wants to take this back and forth offline, send a message directly to my thedwards1 Ancestry.com User ID and we can explore more, perhaps with shared email addresses. The more we understand about the "maybe two" Richards the better chance we have of zeroing in on whose who.

Or continue something here as you wish.

Tom Edwards

DAVIES of Llangurig and Trefeglwys

Hoping to find others researching my family.

Richard DAVIES born Llangurig abt 1812 married Mary (surname unknown). This Richard was widowed in 1881 and living in Glynbrochan (farmer of 160 acres) with 2 unmarried children.

Their eldest son Richard (b1832 Llangurig – 1918 Trefeglwys) is my gt gt gt grandfather. Richard married Mary (surname also Davies) and had 10 children: Mary Jane b1861, Richard b1864, John b 1866, Margaret b 1868, Elizabeth (Lizzie) b 1871, Matilda (Tille) b1873, Ellen Louise (Nellie) b1876, and Thomas Edward b 1882. By 1871 the family were living in Bodaioch Hall in Trefeglwys, raising sheep. Thomas’ daughter Mary still lives there.

Richard and Mary’s eldest daughter Mary Jane married Richard EDWARDS in 1881 and had 3 children – Mary Eleanor (aka Nellie m Llew Mills no issue), Richard Asaph and John Ernest (my gt grandfather). The two boys emigrated to Australia and had 2 (both living) and 8 (3 living incl my grandmother aged 91yrs) children respectively.

When Richard snr died in 1897 Mary Jane married his nephew John Henry Davies and had 2 more children – Gwladys Myfanwy (m Charles Ioworth Evans no issue) and Cecil Edgar (m Adeline Breed no issue). This family lived in Talgarth House in Llanidloes.

I’m having lots of trouble tracing marriages/issue/deaths of Mary Jane’s siblings. I know that Thomas married Anna Mary Owen. I believe Lizzie married James Fulcher and Nellie married Evan Evans, but can’t confirm these hunches as yet. For the others I have no marriages or deaths.

Please contact me if you know anything of this family! Any bit of info would be helpful – contact with actual family members thrilling!!!!!

Sharon
Newcastle Australia
The owner was a Dr... whose name I can't recall.

Not much help sorry :~)

All the best

Sioux

I am trying to track any information about an ancestor, Thomas Owens. He died in Bangalore in 1822 while serving with 53rd Regiment of Foot which he had joined in 1807. The regimental record of his death gives a birthplace which looks like 'Montgomery Commias' and his profession as a Tailor. I believe he was born around 1786.

Many thanks!

Thank you so much for that information. I was unaware that the church at Pont LLogel/Llwydiarth wasn't built until 1854.

Kind regards,
Susan

To check for baptism you need to check church records of Llanfihangel yng Nghwynfa and Llangadfan. The church at Pontllogel/Llwydiarth not erected until 1854

Thank you . That does give me a basis to look at over his possible relationship to Richard Charles Evans living with him in 1881 census as the second family there. Anne may be a Jones ..who married that Richard Evans 1837

David Pierce Roberts was headmaster of Llangadfan School. He and his wife are buried in Llangadfan churchyard and is highly unlikely to have fathered the children mentioned.... why she left him the legacy is a mystery unless his wife was related
