Hello from Australia.

My gggrandfather ROBERT VAREY (surname spelling varies a little both in Australian and English records) emigrated with his first wife and child in 1840 - arriving in Geelong, in what was then New South Wales, now Victoria.

Most little bios from the local history groups and writers have him as being born in Monmouth, Mon'shire, Wales c1814. No record found to attest to this.

One contemporary piece however says he/his father came from Westmorland which i am looking into.

On his 1840 marriage record it gives his father as being John Varey, a Labourer.

Robert was a stonemason, as per the Lancaster 1841 census and in Victorian documents.

On his Victorian death certificate, 1855, it gives Monmouthshire, but i don't have confidence with that.

I don't know Robert's mother.

Would you be able to clarify if he was or wasn't born in Wales please?!

Regards
Julie
